Still Winter Preparation and Price Should Reflect That

I have played this course multiple times but this was £20 per person and the course was not in great condition. There were winter tees at all holes with some holes being significantly shortened as a result. Also two winter greens but there was no attempt to properly prepare the winter greens, as there were tractor tyre marks right across the so-called putting surface. It was easier to use a 7 iron than a putter on these surfaces. The greens that were in play were not being repaired properly by other players with many deep ball marks. (disappointed in my fellow golfers not repairing) The bunkers were all still out of play.
It was fortunately a sunny afternoon and therefore enjoyed the walk but as far as the golf course was concerned I have to say it was disappointing on this occasion. I am sure I will be back later in the year.

Hidden Gem

This is an excellent course hidden away in the Scottish Borders. It is not a long course but requires accurate play. There are Par 3s which are very short but accuracy is vital. There is some up and down to the geography of the course so a reasonable degree of mobility is required if you are walking.
Course was in excellent condition and was an enjoyable afternoon. I would recommended this course to anyone looking for an alternative to the more expensive borders courses.

An interesting challenge but dangerous in places

I played this course with my son both 12 handicappers. The course was in reasonable condition considering the cold weather. Greens were good but there is an issue with players not repairing their pitch marks. Lots of fresh damage. We were kept busy repairing on behalf of others. There are a few blind drives where players are at risk of being struck by flying balls. The fairways are also shared by several holes if the wind catches the ball or just a bad shot. One of us had to take avoiding action with no shout of "fore" from the guilty party. So all in all it was an interesting day out with the short sixth challenge and the longest hole too, but we won't be back.

Dangers lurk on this course

We played this course today and we were almost struck by golf balls on 4 separate occasions. The course is relatively new and does not have the mature trees that it needs to separate some fairways. There are a number of blind shots which are guarded by bells but this requires players to abide by the sounding of the bells and waiting until they are sounded. Some bells could be more distinctive. There are areas where teeing off players can be unsighted of players in hazardous locations if there’s a slice or a hook. The 3rd tee we thought needed safety netting behind it. The 14 tee represents a potential hazard for the 13 green easily solved by safety netting or some trees. The 8 and 15 almost share a fairway although in opposite directions with balls bouncing from the 8th to the 15th, and both sets of players are potentially unsighted of the others. All in all it was a nice course with lots of water hazards, good condition, service in the bar excellent and staff courteous. Food was tasty as well.

Has its dangers

We played this course today and it is a typical Scottish links course - narrow undulating fairways, gorse, beach, wind, and greens that don’t like receiving the ball from a height. However there are areas of the course which are hazardous owing to the proximity of tee boxes and greens. This is highlighted at the 14 green, 15 tee and 16 green. Wayward approach shots to these two greens are a serious hazard. Driving from the 17 tee represents a hazard for those on the 16 fairway. There are safety notices advising waiting until the 16th is clear but that requires compliance and on a busy day that could be challenging to avoid a bottleneck. I can understand wanting to keep the historical layout but safety netting and a slight alteration in layout would reduce risk. Fortunately today it was not overly busy and most golfers could control the ball. Course could not be faulted, food great, service great and facilities excellent.

Improving Slowly But evidence of commitment

I returned to play this course to see if the devastation caused to the greens by the failure of the irrigation system was being addressed. The greens are far from perfect having been drilled but they are recovering albeit slowly, at least there is more green than brown now but the ball still has no chance of running true. The ground staff though seem to be putting in the effort to get the course back into the condition it used to be pre-Covid. The bunkers are also being renovated with evidence of recent works. I would give the course another couple of months of spring growth and hopefully with some further care the greens will at least be more grass than moss. The remainder of the course was in good condition. It needs the replacement of the signs at the end of the 8th hole for the directions to the 9th tee for visitors who don't know the course, as I met a threesome who had been wandering around for 10 minutes lost!! The replacement of signage on the tees for distances etc... would be welcome and a guide for the pin position ie. front, middle, back etc... but all in all it is good to be able to see some effort being made to restore the course. Once there is full time golf staff things can only get better.

Greens a disaster

I usually play this course multiple times in a year but less this year. The greens are an absolute disaster. The grass has suffered from severe die back owing a failure of the irrigation system. The surface is probably worse than an artillery firing range. The ball does not run true as it leaps and jumps across the surface. It is an absolute lottery and as putting is half the game, the price should reflect that OR there should be a clear warning that the greens are in extremely poor condition. They are recovering slowly compared with a couple weeks ago but still poor. Some of the bunkers need attention with a crop of weeds in evidence. Overall impression is that still lot of green keeping catchup to be done. The pace of play also extremely slow with corporate groups slowing progress. Just shy of 4.5 hours is ridiculous.

Still a problem with Slow Play

The course was in much better condition today. There had been some effort put into controlling the moss on the greens and they had clearly been cut, rolled, moss killed, and sanded. This did create some bumps and the ball did still not run true but maybe over the next few weeks, this will improve. Much more irritating was slow play. We were following 2 groups of 3 who were not such experienced players but they would not let us through. An exasperating and frustrating afternoon. There requires an official on a buggy to ensure that players either keep up to their time or let faster players through. I appreciate we all had to learn and improve but we also learned about golf course etiquette.

Good Afternoon Golf But Slow

Course was in overall good condition but the greens still need some work as they don't run true with some bumps and imperfections. The bunkers have also not been fully restored from the ravages of lockdown. The pace of play was slow owing to some inexperienced players who had difficulty with direction and distance. Appreciate we all had to learn at some time but it was still a frustrating afternoon.
It is still a good test of golf and I would recommend.

Excellent Afternoon's Golf

This is shorter course than I am used to as a member of a Championship Course with yardage of around 7200. The Course was in great condition but local knowledge would certainly have saved a stroke or two in places. A map on the score card would be helpful or plaques at the tees showing the hole layout. Not everyone uses a GPS map on their smartphone!! The greens are small and require a good accurate approach shot. The course is not festooned with bunkers and if you play accurately a good score is readily achievable. Some of the holes are interesting playing from elevated tees to small greens on Par 3s. All in all it was a good afternoon's outing. Very enjoyable and only 1 ball lost!

Cracking Parkland Course

Played this course as a change from my own. Course makes good use of the mature trees that line the fairways, hence there is minimal heavy rough and if you end up in there you are a way off target. Parkland. The greens are all readily accessible with a well targeted approach shot but some have sharp drop off at their rear so plenty back spin required. Not many are protected by large greenside bunkers and there are no bunkers that you need a JCB to help you get out. Some well placed fairway bunkers to catch the unwary. There is a crissing and crossing of tees and fairways at a couple of spots and care is needed as the tees are in range of a hooked/sliced tee shot. The course was in great condition as were the greens given recent heavy rain in the Scottish Borders and weren't suffering from the dreaded seasonal coring and top dressing. I was only 2 over for the front nine but the course had its revenge on the back 9 courtesy of the trees!! Lovely course. thoroughly recommend.

Magnificent Value for Money and great course

I played this course as the last one on my vacation from Scotland as it seemed to be so cheap for what the reviews stated. So there is no GPS in the cart, and your water is an extra but who cares. The course was in excellent condition and whilst there are many potential watery graves careful club and shot selection and a degree of accuracy ensures that they do not come in to play. Course was populated by an interesting selection of wildlife including an alligator in one of the ponds, a real bonus. The etiquette shown by on this course by other golfers surpassed that I had encountered on other courses during my stay. A slow and less competent fourball let us play through without any challenges and likewise another pair of elderly golfers allowed us to pass as well. Marked contrast to other places where golfers of less ability steadfastly held on to their place to the frustration of others!! There is a lesson here. The course was in excellent condition and a joy to play. Had I been staying longer I would have been back.

Nice Course needs some upgrading

I picked this course as my girls were riding at Forever Florida, we are on holiday from Scotland. . I was pleasantly greeted by the bag drop/starter who gave me the low down on the course. There are no GPS direction finders in the carts and only a smidgeon of ice. The pro shop is adequate and I was given a polystyrene beaker of ice to set me up. I do think that all courses should factor in at least 1 litre of water for all players given the heat at midday. The course is set amongst an up and coming housing development although the houses are well away from most holes. The course also includes a number of nature conservation areas and there are many species of animals to see. There are a number of water holes but you can either chose to play across water to reduce your score or if less confident there is a route around. The bunkers were good with a decent depth of sand which was a pleasant change compared with some of the more expensive courses I have played this vacation. It would have been helpful if the green flags had been a uniform colour on the outward and inward nines instead of a mixture of red, blue and yellow!! The greens were good and generally ran true. Fairways good with the cranes as constant companions. Frustrating was the absence of distance markers. I presume they assume everyone has a GPS or laser rangefinder these days. I belong to the group that considers this not part of the game and distance should be measured by the eyeball!!
Overall it was a pleasant round, pretty course which I am sure will become really good as the years go by with some investment.

Dreadfully slow play

I am a visitor from Scotland and decided to play this course after reading on line reviews. So, I arrived as a single and was buddied up with another single and a couple to make a foursome. All very sociable and we had good fun. However the course was not at its best with some of the fairways quite wet from recent rain but marked contrast to another local course I played yesterday which did not have the same issues. That was disappointing. But the biggest gripe was the speed of play. It took five hours to play a 7000 yard course in a buggy. This is ridiculous and there should be a ranger to enforce compliance with time. At home I would walk a 7000 yard course and expect to finish in maximum of four hours. The slow play put a dampner on what would otherwise have been an enjoyable day.

Excellent experience spoilt by poor bunkers

I played this course as part of my vacation trip. I am from Scotland where we obviously have an abundance of quality courses. The meet and greet experience was good with the staff being very pleasant and attentive. It was good to find my cart equipped with GPS, two towels and a couple of bottles of water and ice. The condition of the course was good although the greens had been aerated so they were not as true as they could have been. But by far the biggest frustration was the lack of sand depth in the bunkers. Admittedly it had been wet recently but some less expensive courses managed to maintain their bunkers so why not this one. I had a few frustrating experiences with sand iron jumping off the solid base of the bunker. Otherwise course was well maintained and a pleasure to play.

Dangerous Layout

Decided to play this course after reading reviews but although the course was in pretty good condition the greens were not running quite true and there is clearly an issue with players not repairing their pitch marks. Some of the bunkers were a bit devoid of depth of sand.
But of greater concern is the course layout, having almost been hit with balls on two occasions we were seriously concerned by the proximity of tees and greens, and some hole layouts in our view unsafe. To sandwich a tee between two smallish greens in our view was an accident waiting to happen. There is also another location where the next tee is directly adjacent to a small green with an approach over a gully. Players avoiding the gully will be aiming virtually at the back of the tee which is unprotected., You need to have 4 sets of eyes playing this course and this was on a virtually windless day. With a wind I would be wearing a hard hat!
The pace of play was horrendously slow. The course is only 5880 of the yellows and it may be that is part of the problem as some par 4s just around the 320 yards are in reach of us with a long drive. Thus waiting backed up at par 4s and 3s. 4 hours and 20minutes was a long time.
Overall nice walk in the sunshine but won't be back owing to the safety issues.

Good Winter Walk

sunny winter day with the surface defrosting but still firm underneath. Some winter tees in play which shortened some holes considerably especially 13 and 14. Greens were far from true as expected at this time of year but overall it was an enjoyable afternoon and a good challenge for rusty golf.

Beautiful Day but Unforgiving Rough

This was a return trip for me to this course. It was in immaculate condition. The greens were fast and true. The fairways manicured, the bunkers sand soft, but the rough- grass two and half feet high and the rest. I know one is not supposed to get in there but it would be good to have a fighting chance to finding the ball. Hole position maps at each tee would be a bonus, as would be a map of each hole. Ok you can always buy the course guide but I have played on many courses now where a map at the tee is standard.
I think that a course "parkie" would be a useful addition to keep the speed of play at a reasonable pace. We took 4 hours and 10 minutes for 18 holes which is not outrageous but there were times where we were waiiting because of several four balls hunting for balls in the rough!!
All in all a great days golf and i will be back.

Fine Sunday Afternoon

Lovely afternoon on a very quiet parkland course. Marvellous views. Course in great condition if ground a little hard owing to absence of rain. There are a number of holes where on a busy day I would foresee problems with fairways criss-crossing, and some greens/tees close to each other. Some really interesting holes but most greens are unprotected by bunker, but large mature trees do a formidable job of the same. Greens are small, hard and fast, so stopping the ball was challenging. Some of the holes require a hike uphill or down! All in all i would recommend for a late afternoon, early evening outing to finish the day. We played around in just short of 3 hours.
