Galleon/Brigantine at Shipyard Golf Club
Played On 12/01/2023Nice Fall Outing
Travel to Hilton Head repeatedly to enjoy playing multiple courses. Shipyard has a unique layout that allows you to play three different nine holes. While almost every hole has water, most players have a chance at par. But that doesn’t mean that birdies are easy to come by. My partner makes sure they have extra water balls too… Because there’s No Way they’re going near to the water because of the silent but deadly Gators that lurk around.
The greens are in incredible shape. You definitely have to have a delicate touch as your ball will roll a long way. Green side bunkers are soft and are challenging with a variety of depths that ensure that part of your game better be ready. They are also positioned in ways to make the openings to the greens narrow .
While we enjoy playing as many courses possible, this is one that I’m ready to squeeze in again!
Dogwood Trace Golf Course
Played On 09/02/2019Wonderful Course- Great Value
Rated in the top 10 courses in the state. Amazing for a public run course. Greens in fantastic shape, with undulations which make it challenging but fair. Every time I’ve played the starter has allowed us to leave early. Very enjoyable and worth the drive. Once you’ve played it, you’ll find it one you’re going to play many times...
Par Three at Windy Hill Golf Course
Played On 08/11/2019Cheap Place to get a practice round
We’re 60+ and walked the Lake Course with our pull carts. Next time we’ll get their Cart as there were lots of slopes to climb. For such a short course it had plenty of challenges. A few of the greens were in poor shape and one even had some other grass popping up so be prepared. (Note: the brown areas are likely due to the extremely high temperatures we’ve had this summer.). For $20 we played the 9 holes twice so a great value.
The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Cottage
Played On 04/22/2018Early season conditions
Staff friendly and arrive early to get a comp range basket. Like the course layout and there are 3 nines for variety. Even so, the greens were all “holed” so no smooth putting anywhere. The sand traps were mostly hard packed and could chip out using a pitching wedge. I hope the greens heal from the season prep but suspect it will be 2-3 weeks. Also hope they bring in some fresh sand and soften up those traps. I’d wait until later in May to return.
Dogwood Trace Golf Course
Played On 05/26/2017Exceptional Value
I've played several courses within 50 miles of Richmond VA and was pleasantly surprised by the course conditions and layout. After several days of rain the greens and fairways were dry and quick. Honestly, the only criticism I have is that they don't have a driving range and they are 30 minutes away. Even so, I will play here a lot more!
The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Cottage
Played On 10/17/2014Good Value for this short but interesting course.
3 different 9 hole sections, each with positive aspects. Good senior rates and discounts using Golf Now. Friendly and helpful staff. Greens are a serious challenge.
River's Bend Golf Club
Played On 05/02/2014Friendly but needs some attention.
We had a harsh winter, and recent storms but the course needs some TLC. Bunkers mostly unplayable and wooden bridge has some rotten timbers. Greens are in good shape and the course layout is interesting and challenging. Staff are very friendly and discounted rates make this a good place to hone your game.
Queenfield Golf Club
Played On 10/20/2013First time on course
My wife and I were looking for a relaxing but challenging afternoon of golf. We found the staff extremely friendly and attentive. The greens were fantastic. Very generous fairways with thick woods that keep you from being too aggressive. The area has had a significant amount of rain recently and traps were a bit firm but playable. Nice driving range, separate putting and chipping greens. Strongly recommend this course!
