Nice layout. Good value in PHX

This course was in good shape with a very good design. The second nine was particularly good. It represents a good value for winter golf in Phoenix area.

Specifically, the first 8 holes were tight with good design requiring thoughtful tee shots, not just hitting driver as far as possible.
Greens were recently aerated with small holes but very putt-able. Holes 9-18 were even better with manicured tee boxes and fairways.
Par 3's had a variety of distance with elevation changes. Hole #13 was unique in the world as a par 5 tight off the tee finishing with a 100 yard uphill approach with "church pew" bunkers on the face and 30+ yard long green.
I played the black tees as a 9 handicap and found it playable and challenging. My wife (14 hcp) played the white tees and found it great fun.

Excellent course

The only warm up area is hitting off mats in a cage. 😚. Practice putting green is small. There are two distictly different 9s. The course conditions were very good but not lush. The greens were firm and fast and true but with some blemishes. I am 9 hcp and played blue tees and usually had 100 yard approach shots. The first 9 was fairly tight with construction on #2 and some well positioned but poorly maintained penalty areas. Interesting slopes and elevation changes; blind shots on #1,2,6. I liked the course design rewarding shot shape and distance control. The second 9 was completely different with very scenic holes, pedestalled tee boxes, larger greens, elevation up and down, bordering mountain with hiking trail. #18 tee box is a fantastic photo op looking down on the green and out towards downtown. Well worth the $100 greens fee.

Excellent University course

My winter round at NMSU was excellent. The dormant bermuda provided good lies. The greens were in good shape. I understand they are planning major changes to the course in the near future with development of commercial property on 6 holes and building and re-routing 6 new holes. This is an excellent value and excellent option for winter golf. Easy to walk.

Excellent for winter golf

NMSU golf course is in excellent winter (February) condition. The fairways are dormant ( brown) bermuda. A nice bonus were occasional tufts of green bent grass from which I chose to hit. The greens were bent ( poa annua) smoothe and mowed which rolled out nicely. Green contours were subtle. The tees and areas around greens were green bent grass.
Amenities ( pro shop, cart girl, restaurant) were excellent..

Every day man's Pebble Beach

Pacific Grove continues to be a fantastic golf option. The back 9 along the Pacific Ocean is unequalled for a municipal golf course. The coastal wind adds to the challenge of the Links. The lighthouse is a great added visual and historic bonus. The front 9 wanders amongst a residential neighborhood with well planned holes. I recommend PG to anyone living in the Monterey area or any visitor to Pebble Beach or other incredible courses on the Peninsula. It's a great way to get used to the breeze and climate of the region inexpensively and get warmed up for other rounds. It's historic and memorable in its own right.
