They poured $5 million into a renovation and have opened it before finishing the renovation.

Major portions of the fairway on 5 holes and significant portions of the fairway on several others were completely re-sodded in June, in the middle of a heat wave. And then they opened the course to the public 2 weeks later. The predictable result is that in August, almost all of that sod is dead and now there are major bare spots throughout those fairways (holes 1, 3, 8 and 9). Construction continues on a par 4 that is now only playable as a par 3 (the 5th).

Weeds are now running rampant on tee boxes and fairways that were not affected by construction. And the greens, which were in excellent shape when the course opened on July 4, are now showing the effect of neglect with bare spots appearing. One of the goals of the renovation was to improve the irrigation system. It appears that sprinklers are not yet working.properly. A pump house was supposed to be built on one of the expanded ponds but construction has not yet started.

Oh, they give you $5 off if you walk and $10 off if you ride. They should be paying you to play this mess. It's a major scandal that so much taxpayer money could be so badly mis-managed. Who ended up with the money that was supposed to be used on the course?

Sprain Lake is in excellent condition. The only complaint is that on a Saturday afternoon, with a 12 noon tee time, the round took 5 hours. On a weekday morning, when I have teed off before 9, the round takes 4 hours or 4 and a quarter.

Everything on course was in good shape. The 8th hold was closed on my last visit; they are repairing the greens which were showing signs of extreme wear when I played earlier in the season. They have a "spare" par 3 that makes up for it (if you're keeping a handicap, no fair taking that easy par 3 instead of the more challenging par 4 it replaces without an adjustment).

One nice amenity is the snack shop after the 9th hold. It's well stocked with fresh sandwiches and a good selection of drinks.

The course truly feels like it's in Ireland. Very green hills surround the course with beautiful views and the course layout incorporates rolling, but subtle hills. It was well-manicured and the staff were very friendly. Rangers patrolled to keep the pace but we had no problems. We finished our round in 4 hours on a Friday morning. The only advisory is that the greens were lightning fast - a slight tap and the ball rolled 20 yards. And the greens had a fair number of bare spots, too. It was disappointing that the golf carts did not have GPS - but I was happy that my little GolfBuddy GPS recognized it so we weren't completely blind.

This is a course with a lot of history that should be fun to play. Unfortunately it is fallen on hard times. Maintenance is at a minimum. Grass is not mowed on a regular schedule and so pace of play is agonizing as people lose their ball 2 feet off the fairway. Halfway concession stand has minimal food choices on the rare occasions it's opened. And drainage is in sad shape; fairways are more muck than grass n several riverside holes.

Mohansic is a long course with many long but wide open fairways. Overall it is very well maintained and has a beautiful setting. The halfway house has a very good selection of food and drink. It is challenging to walk but the course has benches at every tee box, which is something that people who walk appreciate. Consider driving if you're not in top shape. ONe hole is steep enough that the regulars call it heart attack hill.
