Wayland Country Club
Played On 04/10/2022There's Better
I was a little bit disappointed because of all the great reviews. Maybe the course is cut down a bit since its the beginning of the year, but its a very short/easy course. Conditions were average. The layout is probably my least favorite I've played in Boston, too many short, straight ahead, par 4's. No real teeth to the course at all. Fairway bunkers on some holes aren't even in play. Greens don't roll that fast, aren't protected by bunkers in the front and aren't elevated so you can run something on every hole. Reminded me of Unicorn, but Unicorn is less expensive. Would rather play Sandy Burr.
On a positive note: their cheeseburgers at the turn are dynamite, the staff is friendly and its very walkable.
Cummings Cove Golf & Country Club
Played On 11/05/2021Great mountain course
Out of town and found this on golf now. Course is kept in very good shape and has great views. Short but challenging. If you spray the ball then you might want to bring 3 or 4 sleeves. Course was playing tough, greens were tough and fast. A couple holes where I chipped into the middle of the green on a slope and my ball rolled off. Loved the layout very unique with memorable holes. I don’t know if 55 dollars is their summer rate, but if it is that is a total steal.
The Omni Grove Park Inn
Played On 11/04/2021Great Course - would play again.
Thursday at noon tee time, it was an overcast day and no one was on the course so lucky me. Course is in great shape. Not very long, great par 3’s (on the front 9, back nine are ok) and short par 5’s that are very scoreable. All the classic Donald Ross features are present ( blind tee shots, extreme uphill/downhill approaches, really tricky greens with lots of undulation.) The routing of the course is very unique, it sort of takes you all over the place. I mention this because I walked and it was a little tough to try and find the next hole, but definitely wouldn’t be a problem if you take a cart. Not a ton of holes where you can hit driver.
Quail Ridge Country Club
Played On 10/16/2021It was just ok
Reading the reviews, I thought this place would be worth trekking out of the city to check out. It was just ok. Very friendly starter and pace of play was surprisingly quick. Didn’t love the layout, once you get past the first 3 holes they all feel the same. Short par 4’s that are 3 wood/ short iron. It’s really tight, most holes if you aren’t in the fairway or second cut off the tee, you’re gone. I was a little disappointed by the conditions, greens were beat up, and seemed like no one repaired their ball marks which was a shame. Overall, enjoyable but I would drive 40 mins again to go play it.
Braintree Municipal Golf Course
Played On 04/14/2021One of the better Muni's in Boston
This is a great muni.
Pros:
-This place and everyone who goes here is quintessential Braintree/Boston, what an experience. Just feels like a muni
-Conditions are EXTREMELY good, barely any divots in the fairway, greens rolling at a good speed and in great shape.
-Nice variation of holes for the par 4's and 5's
-Challenging without being excessively long. If you're wild off the tee, bring a lot of balls.
-You can find walking rates for 10 bucks....you are not going to find a better value anywhere 30 mins from the center of the city.
Cons:
- Some of the par 3's are a little repetitive but the green on the par 3 3rd is lethal. Not a huge fan of the 18th hole either, all side hill lies no matter how good your tee shot is.
-In the fall months or if its wet, this place does not drain well at all. If its been raining expect to get plugged at least once because the fariways get really really soft.
Braintree Municipal Golf Course
Played On 08/18/2020Braintree Municipal
Played BT Municipal a few times now. It's a good course that has some really challenging holes (especially on the back 9). I've played now early in the morning (before 8) and later in the afternoon and the pace of play has been solid. The course doesn't drain very well and if its rained recently you're going to get plugged or will be hitting out of a marsh. Besides that the course is in really great shape for a municipal. Good value as well and its very walkable.
Mountain Branch Golf Course
Played On 08/06/2020First time playing
Really nice course, pretty similar in difficulty and quality to Greystone. Not a ton of bunkers but if your a slicer off the tee keep your driver in the bag because OB is tight here and you're not finding your ball or hitting out of the rough stuff. Course was in good shape with normal wear and tear from it being the summer. I played at noon on a Thursday and there was maybe 3 other groups on the course (it was supposed to rain that day). Course layout is fantastic but would not recommend walking, its a bit too spread out and you'll get tired (my fault but still good exercise). I would like to especially call out Bob on the Mountain Branch staff. Extremely friendly, offered to give me a ride to the driving range, checked in and asked how I was enjoying the course at the turn, just super friendly and really made it a nice experience. Will definitely come back and play again.
