Williamsburg National Golf Club - Jamestown Course
Played On 09/04/2020Great layout and fair challenge
Jamestown requires a little more strategy and emphasis on shot placement than Yorktown but it is still a fun layout. Club staff are always top notch and the course conditions were as good as one could expect in late summer.
Magnolia/Dogwood at Brunswick Plantation & Golf Links
Played On 07/31/2020Tale of two nines
I played the Azalea to Magnolia Route. Overall, the course was in great shape and the greens were the fastest of the week. Azalea was a great 9 that keeps you on your toes and has a little something for everyone, including #4 which is postcard worthy. Despite a fairly full tee sheet, the pace was still at about 2 hours. When I turned to Magnolia, a log jam developed at #2. The pace slowed to a crawl thanks to one foursome not playing ready golf and evaluating every shot like it was the US Open. The marshal I had seen 3 times on Azalea never made it to Magnolia and it made for almost a 3 hour back nine. At a 27 hole complex, that is inexcusable. Also, Magnolia was a mostly bland mix of holes compared to
Azalea. I’d like to try Dogwood to Azalea next time, that seems to be the ticket.
Farmstead Golf Links
Played On 07/29/2020Fantastic every time
Farmstead has become one of my top courses to play in the MB area. The layout is diverse, fair, and interesting which makes for a fun round every time, and with the size of the fairways, big hitters will have a field day. For late July, the course couldn’t have been in better shape, especially the greens rolling smooth and true. Only minor downsides were the range was closed for maintenance and no beverage cart but since it was a midweek afternoon, both were understandable. A must play for those in the area.
Farmstead Golf Links
Played On 07/29/2020Excellent Summer Conditions
For the heat of the summer, the course was in excellent shape and the greens were smooth and quick. The round was just under 4 hours and we enjoyed the variety of the layout and the generous fairways to bomb it off the tee. One of my MB area favorites!
Thistle Golf Club - Cameron Course
Played On 07/28/2020Good track, a little overpriced
Played the Stewart to Mackay route. Stewart had some interesting holes but it seemed fairly average to me. Mackay was a much more exciting 9 in my view although both gave a fair test. Course is was in as good of shape as expected in the summer heat and the beverage cart came frequently which was a plus with no water on the course or coolers in the cart. Overall, I think this experience was slightly overpriced for the hot summer days. I would pay $90 in prime season but in July it was a bit excessive all things considered.
