The Bristol Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 11/04/2020Great customer service
Turned up and was told that the course was very busy, and that I'd need to play with 3 others - not great on any number of fronts in the current climate! I said I wasn't too happy about that, as time and health were of the essence - so they suggested that I could play the Par 3 as many times as I liked, and gave me a coffee for my troubles. This suited me down to the ground - it was all done painlessly, proactively and with a smile. Superb customer service - something many other clubs could learn from. I look forward to returning to try out the 18 hole course sometime in the future - but for now I can only compliment the staff for being wonderful - thank you!
Forest of Dean Golf Club
Played On 10/22/2020Where's the etiquette?
On the second hole, I had to wait whilst two members sharing one buggy (and sharing clubs)drove off. They held me up on every hole until the 9th, often disappearing into the woods to look for lost balls, and stayed on every green to mark their cards. It was torturous. At one stage, I thought they'd given up as there was no sign of them, and as I played my shot there was a shout from the woods asking me what I thought I was doing, as they hadn't called me through!
Thank goodness, they finished after 9 holes, but two holes later I got held up by a threeball for the rest of the round. I was joined eventually by a couple of members who said that the three in front were committee members - and that the etiquette in the club in general was very poor. I couldn't agree more! Shame, as it's a not a bad little course, but I won't be going back there.

Played On 10/15/2020Another wonderful round!
This is a wonderful course with friendly staff and members. As usual, despite plenty of recent rain, the course was in immaculate condition - surely some of the fastest, truest greens in the area. Plenty of variety, with no two holes the same, round completed in just over three hours despite the course being fairly busy, mainly because people there seem to always be conscious of the fact that calling someone through makes everyone's round pleasanter. I play this course a couple of times a year - and my only criticism is that it's always difficult to find - which may be part of the reason it is always so special. I look forward to many more rounds there.
Bryn Meadows Golf Club
Played On 10/07/2020Almost two hours for 5 holes!
The title says it all - far too many people allowed onto the course, after I waited for 3 other groups to tee off on the 5th, I walked in. 7 hour rounds aren't very appealing....I asked for a refund, but was refused. Stay well clear!

Played On 01/09/2019Excellent value, friendly course
This is a very pleasant course - lots of variety, some steep climbs and ascents, lots of flat holes. It was very muddy - but it was early January after all - but still managed a very enjoyable round.
Staff and members couldn't have been more welcoming, and despite the mud and a few claggy spots on the greens and the fairways, this was a good challenge. Could have done with a bit more sign posting - I completely missed out one hole (the 4th), but that's nothing that can't be sorted very easily. Really enjoyed it - and excellent value for the cost. Would definitely recommend to others, and will return when the course is likely to be a little bit firmer! A very positive experience.

Played On 11/23/2018Lovely course, ignorant members!
Tough to find - but course was in very good condition considering the weather. A good variation of holes, not a bad one amongst them. But to the fourball I stood on the tee with for the last 6 holes - if you don't want to call people through, that's your prerogative - but when you stand talking in front of greens, spend 10 minutes looking for balls, mark your cards on the greens and find another half dozen ways to play slowly as well, it doesn't advertise your club very well - shame, as it's a cracking little course, excellent value for money.
Maesteg Golf Club
Played On 11/18/2018100 minutes to play 3 holes
Played the first 6 holes - took 45 mins. Then got held up by a junior 3 ball playing in a comp - took over an hour and a half to play the next 3 holes. Never seen such time wasters on a golf course - who did they think they were? 15 minutes looking for a ball - 3 times! Could easily have called me through, even though they were playing in a comp. No wonder people get put off playing golf when such dreadful attitudes abound. Hopefully they'll develop more common sense and decency as they grow older. Course was OK - but shan't be going back - life is too short!
Aberdare Golf Club
Played On 07/25/2017Mixture of good and bad
Good variety of holes, very friendly staff and members, lovely setting. But....very hard to walk, every hole up and down, greens were far too long, made putting a chore rather than a challenge, poorly signposted so got lost between holes a few times, very long walk between some holes as well, lots of crossovers with scant regards for posted etiquette (thus waiting for people to putt out on one hole whilst wanting to drive another on numerous occasions), not cheap for the area for the overall experience, and generally a hard slog to get around - so despite the friendliness, I won't be returning, I'm afraid.

Played On 06/20/2017Nightmare from start to finish
Firstly, there was a problem with my booking - despite the fact I showed them my booking confirmation - was even chased out to the car park by the staff member and humiliated in front of other golfers. Course was in shocking condition - greens full of holes, tees ragged, fairways and rough too long. Greenkeeper flooded one green whilst I was preparing to chip on to it. Two or three holes are virtually unplayable because of the slope - and despite the 3 inch fairway grass. People cutting in at various stages meant a long, long, frustrating round. Probably one of my worst golf experiences ever. This place should be closed down.
Blackwood Golf Club
Played On 06/16/2017Rough!
Lost 9 balls, without hitting out of bounds once. Very long rough, blind holes, a couple that are virtually unplayable, and a ridiculous bridge on the 9th/18th which I could barely cross. Staff were gruff, locals not very friendly, I didn't really enjoy this at all, sadly.
Bargoed Golf Club
Played On 06/14/2017Very nice course and people
I was given a very warm welcome at my car, and the warmth of the welcome remained throughout the time I was there - a really pleasant experience from the dozen or more people I met around the course and the bar. It's a good course, with plenty of variety, and it was in really good nick when I played there - on a warm, fairly still day. I came from Merthyr - no time at all - and then went home to Cardiff - a fairly easy drive. Some of these valleys courses are real hidden gems - friendly staff and members, and very good golf for a high teens handicapper - and Bargoed is definitely one of the better, pleasanter courses I've played. My only regret is I didn't discover it years ago. I'll be back - if they'll have me.
