TPC Tampa Bay
Played On 06/24/2019overpriced for extremely lousy conditions
DO NOT PLAY HERE. They were airating the fairways while we played so we had to wait for the mechanical equipment on most holes so pace of play was slowed down considerably by that. All greens had been airated and sanded heavily so were very uneven and rolling poorly and inconsistent between greens.
And NOT ONE PERSON in the pro shop mentioned to anyone that the course was being airated. Had the gall to charge full price for the poorly maintained greens. Couple of 4-somes walked off after 9 holes due to the conditions.
Besides airation, there were lots of places where the bermuda was dead and missing both on the greens and on the fairways. The conditions have deteriorated so much over the last year, its unreal. Was one of the best in the area last year and now it's probably one of the worst if not the total worst conditions of any course that I know of in the area, even worse than St. Leo which historically has had bad conditions.
And the course management has decided to charge full price and not tell anyone ahead of time about the conditions, which is really ripping people off in my opinion.
Restaurant is getting worse food as well, now spicy and not as well cooked.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 04/06/2019Beyond slow
5 hours 15 minutes for a threesome was ridiculous pace. Never saw a ranger entire time we played.
And couple i played with had to chase down the cart girl several times. And my wife heard in the bar that several people had been there 4 days and had never seen the cart girl. Yet it was in high 80s temperature wise so I would have thought girl would be out a lot making a lot of sales.
Course was very wet, 1 and 18 were "cart path only" with no provisions for handicapped players. No handicap flags - no need just stay 7-10 yard away from greens and tees. Even if one can't walk that far, it doesn't matter
Greens were slow surprisingly considering everthing. And very inconsistent. one would have very slick places and others that were super super slow. Extremely hard to get feel on.
But lots of emphasis on it was the #1 course in Florida and how great it was by the starter. Seems he's never heard of TPC Sawgrass, Streamsong, Innesbrook Copper Head amoungs many other courses. Super long ways from #1 in state of florida by almost anyone's true judgement.
My wife had to go to check me in as it was too far for myself (disabledd and limited walking ability) to walk. Course staff didn't care. Mostly unfriendly.
Have friend coming from NJ later this month and I cancelled the show round there as it's a lousy showpiece for Florida golf. Rudeness and slowness are not typical for most florida courses, especially those that rely on tourism.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 11/10/2018nice course/layout mostly - staff lousy
for the most part, I like the layout and the severe uphill/downhill terrain. Too many holes are basically silimilar to be considered greatt.
Pro shop access and outside staff mediocre especailly for a course with this type of "rating:
Signs posted all over saying #1 course in Florida, 2nd best in US. I'd be hard-pressed to put it in top ten in Florida for public let alone in US. Compare it with Streamsong, World woods, Sawgrass, Innisbrook, etc and one comes up seriously short. Even Southern dunes, and Orange county national are better designs.
Yes, it is different due to elevation changes but other courses also have that in central fllorida. So even that is not unique.
Sherman Hills Golf Club
Played On 07/14/2018Major issues with GOLF now tee times
Course basically totally dishonors GOLF NOW tee times. As far as they are concerned if you book a tee time thru golf now, you DO NOT repeat NOT have a tee time at their course. They will try to fit you in at the next available time which could be a few hours later.
Plus I took a time at 9:30 but they have a local members scramble that starts at 9 and the last tee time for that is about 10am. so there are never any times prior to 10am even though GOLF NOW says that there are.
To be honest, they really don't want golf now tee times. They flat stated that golf now times are meaningless as there is zero communication between golf now and their tee sheet. It doesn't matter what tee time you get thru golf now, it probably will not be honored. Golf now tee times according to their desk manager are worthless and a waste of money. And they do not honor them.
Greens were ok aat least the practice green was.
Since it was going to be almost an hour before i'd get to tee off (about 1.5 hours after my scheduled time), i got my money back and left. And playinb behind that scramble is super slow. It iwll be close to a 5 hour round as I've played in the scramble before and it typically took about 5 hours.
Grand Cypress Golf Club - Links Course
Played On 07/07/2018ok course, conditions marginal
Round started with zero service from bag drop and front support staff. Then tough pro shop personleal were nice, they said that their computer systesm on a satrurday morning had rebooted and failed and had to wait some time to get systems up. Precluded any type of practice 915-20 minutes just for that.
And they said nothing about course conditions. the starters said the course had been aerated 2 weeks ago and should be good. Actually had been aerated within the last week and greens were basically unputtable. Very very bouncy. COuld see major large tine holes and some sand all over the greens. Major large tine holes thruough course as well. Very lumpy bumpy.
Considering the amount of rain and other thiings, course was reasonably dry but definitely should 2-4 some (three bags but somes 4 playing and sometimes 2 playing that was beyond slow. Woman driving one cart drove super slow and all over course including right up to greens without handicap flag (whcih the course does a good job in providing if needed). Beyond belief slow back nine.
Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 03/24/2018Not worth the time
Lots of issues with this course. Fairways were extremely bare, very little grass in fairways at all, rough was easier and fuller than fairways. Unless you wanted to hit off bare ground, you were better off hitting from rough. most of the greens rolled fairly true but not real fast. Not super slow but definitely not fast and way slower than normal for this course when i've played it in the past.
Took almost 5.5 hours to play. Talked to cart girl and she said that rangers were to do nothing, even if someone were more than a hole or two behind. Management doesn't want to upset any players no matter how slow they are. And one group in front of the group in front of us was over 3 holes behind at the turn. Many times 3 groups on tee waiting.for this group. unless you like playing super slowly, I'd strongly recommend playing elsewhere. For the price and conditions, it isn't worth it. Course has really gone downhill in last 6 months since i played it last.
Course has interesting policy on makiing tee times. It advertises tee times that are not available at all. Tee listings showed several tee times on Golf-now for a couple of days including saturday. Yet, when i got there and asked about them, the staff in the proshop said that that course was 100% booked for several days. One of the tee times on the other course was shown with Florida rate for hours, but when i attempted to book the time, it became unavailable for the Florida rate and only had the non-resident rate available (much much higher - (about $40 more). I found out at the proshop that that rime was filled on Wednesday completely and he didn't understand why they were showing it available on golf now. makes one wonder about golfnow which manages the tee sheet at this course.
Saddlebrook at Saddlebrook Golf & Tennis Resort
Played On 03/16/2018slow and slower
They had an outing of 8 Samsung 4-somes ahead of us. The group in front of us was playing a scramble and we knew it was going to be bad when they hit their second shot (best of all 4) from 50 yards in front of the first tee. And it went downhill from there. Got to the second hole and there were three groups on that hole. no one on the 4th at all. Got the ranger finally to come. Actually the course doesn't have any rangers, only has a starter who sometimes doubles as the ranger. When he got to us, he asked what the issue was. i showed him 4th hole and asked why no one there. He admitted that was a problem and mentioned issues with 5th and so forth. he got one group shortly after that to skip ahead one hole. tried to get the group in front of us to move but they said "we're play a scramble so we can keep up. After 2.5 hours we finished the front nine and the group in front of us stppped for a few mintues so we went ahead of them. Got to 2nd hole (started on back nine) and there were 4 groups on the 2nd tee (par -3). then two of them played the hole and the other two waited. And so it went - one person of our 4-some quit at this point. After the third hole went to 4th and two group playing together and totally drunk on 4th hole. Slower than beyond belief. Twosome left at this point so i was by myself. Played behind the 8 some ahead. And then skipped them and went to 5 and plaed quickly thru rest of round.
Course is fairly heavily treelined with lots of water. But if you can keep it in play, it's really pretty easy. Pretty short - most par-4s are only 300 to 350.
Greens had been heavily fertilized and loaded with chemicals and sand. Blue mixture totally covering greens with lumps and bunches around so putting was totaly guesswork. Fairways were decent for the most part.
Ranger totally worthless really. Nothing helped at all on back nine. Proshop had it's head in sand. My wife heard people complaining about all the pace of play issues and pro shop called ranger and he said there were no problems at all. And pro shop was too lazy to come out and see for themselves even though people were calling the shop from all over about the pace of play. They just didn't care at all. And that's terrible.
Silverado Golf & Country Club
Played On 01/19/2018Poor conditions
conditions not good even though it's during overseed times. Fairways missing grass and greens lumpy and fairly slow. Stimp no more than 7 at best.
4.5 hours for course that should be able to be played easily in 3.5.
Consider USGA was 66.3 with slope of 103. Average USGA slope is considered 113 so course should play very easy and fast. Guys waiting for greens to clear on every par 4 of 320 or less but were playing senior tees (only 5000 yards from those tees). If needed to wait all that much why not play white tees at 5700 yards which still isn't that long.
LPGA International - Hills Course
Played On 12/09/2016Needs work and NOT handicap real friendly
reasonably interesting layout. Basically fairly flat with only moderate amount of water. There is a minimal amount of elevation difference on the course (usually elevated greens more than hilly). Have to keep ball in play to score. And its moderately easy to lose balls.
Claimed no issues with people playing that have serious troubles walking. But when I was parked about 6-8 feet from the green on hole #12 as I was having severe pain walking. Actually had to stop and rest from pain on Hole 12, Ranger said that he understood that i was having problems but i really needed to be further from the greens. ADA says courses must make accomodations for handicap including providing single rider, yet course didnt'.
Ranger also warned other players about pace of play. "People stacking up behind us. Yet we had to wait for group in front of us (over 30 minutes before on tee time) and had trouble because of my problems on the hole where i was really slow due to lots of pain and not able to hit ball very well, we were at fault. 2 holes later, same position, he came by and thanked us for keeping up and getting our pace fine (no issues for myself or anyone else on those two holes).
Greens rolled really well, but it was clear that overseeding had not been done adequately as lots of thin spots on fairways and rough. (not from divots but lack of grass overall - person can tell difference and players i was with commented on this issue especially while we were playing. they asked if it had been overseeded and why it was so thin in places.
Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 08/06/2016Course in superb condition
Course is excellent condition. Front nine plays totally different from back nine. front nine is shorter and way less difficult but very fun to play and will penalize poor shots. Back nine is much much more difficult.
Had several issues but staff was super friendly and helped resolve them quickly.
Restaurant/bar has pretty decent food and drinks.
Got finished in 4:05 for a 3 some. Which isn't bad for fairly busy course.
I live about an hour away and play it regularly as its always in superb condition and pace of play is usually excellent.
Bella Collina Golf Club
Played On 07/05/2015Not as difficult as it seems
A number of people mentioned to me that due to the layout of the course, it was an extremely difficult course with fairways slanting severely making it difficult to hold the fairways with drives or second shots. After playing a number of courses with severe side slopes and major elevation changes, this course didn't seem that tough. The worst sloping fairways were handled by shaping the tee shot into the slope. I did not have a single shot run off the fairway due to the slope.
Layout seemed really really strange. And not marked at all. Got lost and ended up at wrong hole several times due to missing directions for next hole.
GPS on cart was marginally useful (reset it self several times).
Lots of bunkers with tons of small gravel pebbles in them. Bunkers really weren't that good. And course considering the slopes was still pretty wet all over, Now I'll grant we had a large rainstorm the prior night but didn't expect very soft conditions in middle of several side slopes. Greens still recovering from aeration and didn't roll well.
Course did have a lot of length, perhaps too much for the average golfer. One Par 3 was 215 from the white tees to the pin. Another was 180 severely uphill into the wind. A couple of par-4s from the white tees were well over 400 (445, 432). 6345 from the white tees. That would make the pace of play slow if there were many golfers but it was almost totally empty the day I played (a Sunday no less).
Mission Inn Resort & Club - Las Colinas Course
Played On 07/04/2015ok course, conditions marginal
Support staff was a bit overburdened with tournament going out on El Campeon so getting carts etc was difficult. Staff changed my tee time on me to later because of original pairing had friends show up.
Pace of play was ok but not good. 4.75 hours for three some.
Several greens in really bad shape (no grass at all in places, as was the surrounding rough areas to the greens. Lumpy, bumpy, Had been aerated some weeks before but had not recovered at all. Layout was not memorable at all. Have trouble remembering any of the holes.
Just seemed like a run of the mill resort course, nothing special and over-priced at $60.
Really setup to maximize the amount of homes on the course. Long distance between the green and the next tee several times.
But the restaurant serves pricey but excellent food.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 07/03/2015nice course
Very nice historic course. For the most part in excellent condition. Claimed to be moderately difficult but really wasn't that difficult.
But in excellent condition, greens moderate speed. Pro shop claimed they were at 11-12 but really only 9.5-10 at the most. Rolled very smooth and true, just way more slowly than expected.
Not really that hilly. A few holes with some elevation changes but overall pretty flat.
Restaurant exceptional but pricey.
Course was $60 which for Florida in summer is bit pricey.
Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons Resort Orlando
Played On 11/29/2014Ok course but seriously overpriced
Basically its the Old Disney Osprey ridge with a few modifications, not all of them friendly.
Several holes have issues with water drainage and standing water killing grass on the fairways. Since this was an "upgrade" of the existing course, This should never have happened.
Not at all friendly towards the senior or even 18 handicap player. Shortish tees are white at 6000 yards. For example 18 a par 3, plays between 190 and 200 yards. I needed a driver there and even then with the wind couldn't reach the green.
Several forced carries are around 180-200 which is tough for the senior golfer. For better players and long drivers not difficult at all. Many shortish par 4s with not a lot of trouble on huge fairways.
But definitely a real challenge for the senior at the course and yardage.
Conditions were not that great considering the price - Waldorf Astoria much nicer for the price.
Crystal Springs Golf Club
Played On 11/08/2014Ranger issues and still aerated
Course had 6-somes allowed yes, that is 6 player combinations. Needless to say it was beyond slow. And the ranger did not do much at all stopping this. Finally got ahold of the pro-shop after I called my wife to go in and see them and a pro came out to break up at least one.
In addition, for some holes, there were two three-somes ahead of us that sometimes combined into a three some. There's a halfway house between 7 and 8 the threesome just in front of us stopped and ate lunch there. we passed them and went to next tee (8) nobody we could see on fairway up to green. So we teed off. after we had reached our balls, other threesome came to tee and got upset. We finished 8 quickly and were waiting for 9 (two groups on the tee waiting). Three some came up and started threatening several of us for playing thru them. Outright antagonistic One player in our foursome offered to let them play thru since we were waiting anyway. They wouldn't do that, instead heckling and generally being difficult. Got to 10 and they started in again. I got a ranger to come and he did nothing but did get them to play thru us again so they were with their "friends" so they could play again as a 6-some. Ranger did NOTHING else. It took 3:45 to play first 11+ holes. Finally quit and went back to front nine and swept right thru (1 hour for 8 holes).
Major leave problem and still has (like it had all year) aeration issue on greens. Nice decent course if in shape and rangers do anything but with things like this, I wonder.
Doesn't allow walking at all by anyone.
Pound Ridge Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2014Conditions make it not worth the money
Played it in July and 9/21. Aeration holes all over course in July (from April Aeration) and still there yesterday. Lots of bare spots on greens and rough
Many drainage issues - several holes cart path only.
Layout is pretty tricky and requires very strong shots, including a number of forced carries. If you can't hit the ball very far and moderately straight, it will be very long day.
But its a decent challenge for the low single digit player. But not for the 16+ player at all. They don't belong on this course.
CLubhouse is just manufactured building. No real kitchen and food is pretty pricey - ok but nothing special. Driving range is nothing special and is moderately long walk from putting green and 1st tee.
Pace of play reasonable even with several holes cart path only (been that way all year).
Interesting layout as no railroad ties. He used stones as walls.
Definitely not best course in area - Bethpage Black clearly better. But its a very strong decent course. But I don't think its worth what they are charging and they said they're noticeably raising the rates next year.
SLope and USGA on Golf Advisor site seriously wrong - 76.0/150 from tips, 71.7/142 from normal white tees (called granite there).
So its an extremely difficult course according to the USGA. And it plays that way.
TPC Las Vegas
Played On 07/07/2014Conditions awful
Course had been aerated several weeks ago but the course fairways still had major holes in them and several green showed the aeration.
But the worst thing were the bunkers. Hard (like concrete and rocky - small gravel pits). Actually risked ruining clubs in bunkers or worse hurting oneself in them. I've never played a course that had bunkers this rocky and hard.
Course itself is moderately interesting but conditions just overwhelm one.
Got a cookie from the bar area and ended up spitting it out and throwing up because it was so old and bad.
Bear's Best Las Vegas
Played On 07/03/2014Conditions mixed - bunkers awful
Interesting start - I was a single and just in front of me, they had another single check in. Instead of pairing us up, they sent him out and then waited for my tee time (an hour later) and sent me out as a single, strange?
Bunkers were beyond terrible. Rocky hard pan. In some of the bunkers were more gravel than sand. Actually felt that in a couple of them, could hurt oneself hitting out of the bunkers due to all the rocks.
Rest of conditions were pretty decent. Course is not good for the higher handicapped. Some holes are almost unplayable for anyone 18 or more handicap.
Regular price is seriously overpriced, especially considering the shape of the bunkers.
Black Bear Golf Club
Played On 06/28/2014Avoid course like plague if you don't want slow rounds
Round took 5.5 hours. Talked to cart guys afterwards and they said time was pretty typical for this course. "What did I expect?" I complained and said 4:10 to 4:30 was more reasonable and they stated that the course was "too busy" and never was less than 5 hours.
Course was in decent shape overall but always two + groups on most tees. Just not pleasant playing at the pace this course has. Marshalls would go a long ways towards helping if they had any that actually did anything.
Crystal Springs Golf Club
Played On 05/17/2014good but greens poor
Greens had been aerated two weeks ago and it showed as if they had been done yesterday. really lots of holes, bouncy, lumpy, overall very poor condition.
Had rained yesterday so course was basically cart-path only but with handicap flag could go onto fairways but they stated that even then, at all times, cannot go beyond signs on fairways (some of them more than 125 yards from green - ) real problem here at times for the handicapped, unable to fully play without considerable walking or driving beyond the signs) basically not totally legal on treating the handicapped.
Course has a number of narrow fairways and must drive it pretty straight.
