What the Hill?

This was my first time playing this course.
Pros- Quiet, hilly course with beautiful views. Greens are average speed but had to repair many other ball marks bc apparently no one knows how to do that anymore. If you walk, prepare for a lot of up and down. It is not a long course, but the elevation changes make it a challenge. Marshalls on the course maintained speed of groups.

Cons- Most of the course was in good condition, but then on the back nine there were a few tee boxes that were divot ridden, and mostly sand. A few of the greens had bare or disease spots on the outskirts. If you cannot hit the ball straight it will be a challenge as there is a lot of OB in the form of trees or water.

Overall, I will be back, it is priced appropriately and presents a better challenge than similarly priced muni courses. Take a cart. If you have never payed here, get a yardage book, you will not be hitting driver on every hole.

Manage Expectations

Pros- Beautiful Tree lined golf course that has an old school feel to it. It is not a very long course, and most holes are pretty straightforward, very few blind shots. Good course if it is hot out as the tall trees gives you some protection. Driving range has grass and heated covered stalls. If you keep the ball in pay and out of the tree you can score on this course. Staff is friendly. It is a quiet course with no other noise than golfers.

Cons- It is a muni that does have membership even though it is open to the public. Beware of the members that have reserved times on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They are entitled, and will NOT let you play through. The club allows fivesomes for their members, if you get stuck behind the morning members it will be a long day. They play slow and do not care about anyone behind them. They play gambling games which takes up more time. The overall course is in average shape for a muni, some tee boxes are a mess, most of the greens are in decent shape and fairways are good. Green speed is average.

Above Average Muni

This Muni is overall above average as far as Muni's go. It is a Parkland style course with tall, mature pine and leafy trees lining every fairway. It is conveniently located in the center of town, but of course the downsize is car noise on s couple of the holes. It is a short course with 5865 yds from the whites and 6491 yds from the tips. Half the holes are fairly straight away, the rest are doglegs or holes where strategic tee shots are in order due to the trees. The course has some "hilly" holes, which my cart navigated easily, although many golfers (and those more seasoned citizens) seemed to walk it just fine. It is an enjoyable course to play, and for a muni it was in excellent shape. The course was green almost everywhere and the small greens were firm, fast and in very good condition. Visiting from out of town and playing for the first time, it took me 13 holes to remember that we were at 4500 ft. above sea level which meant the ball flew further than I was used to. The clubhouse has a very modest cafe, and it was apparent the clubhouse needs updating. The staff and fellow golfers were very nice and easy going, and as a single with a cart I finished in 2.5 hours and appreciative that all groups let me play through. For $43 bucks which included cart, this was an excellent value. I would play this course again.

Two Different Nines

First time playing Old Mill and played it while visiting on business. Played this course on Weekday afternoon in July, and it was HOT, so as a result pace of play was great, as me and my playing partner finished 18 (with a cart) in 3 hours. Keep this in mind, you are playing at a higher elevation and the ball will fly at least one more club than you need. The positives: Really amazing views of mountains and valleys as the course is situated right up against the Wasatch Mountains. Second, I am glad I took a cart cause it was hilly as all get out. The layout was fairly straight forward, as a first timer new where to hit it, but not just the boring straight shot and driver on every hole. The course is not very long (played from the blues but of note, the front nine was narrow with lots of forced carries and if you miss the fairway, your ball is gone into wasteland. The back nine was much more open off the tee with some easy driving holes. As a result, scoring on the back was much easier. The negatives: The greens were not in that great of shape, lots of ball marks and green damage from previously unrepaired ball marks. On every green I repaired at least 3-4 additional ball marks in addition to my own. The course should enforce golfers repairing their marks have staff regularly drive to greens repairing balls marks- this was disappointing. Second, the driving range was mats only and irons only in the middle of summer- this was the one thing they did enforce. Lastly, they should have had forced carry yard markers on the tee and for dog legs, as it was tough to judge distances that were required to keep the ball in play. Overall, it was a decent experience for the money, make sure you bring lots of extra balls and a range finder.

Great for beginners or for working on short game

This is an executive course- so do not expect this to be Pebble Beach. This is a straight forward, short course as all hole are a par 3 or par 4 so you do not need driver for this course. Easy to walk as it is flat and not hilly whatsoever. The general condition is average at best, but they do keep their greens in very good shape. They typically roll at about an 8 on the stimp, and are not very undulating. Large PNW trees are really its only defense as some shots require placing your tee shot in spots so you are not blocked by large tall trees blocking your second shot. If you keep it in the fairway it is a birdie fest. I would highly recommend this course for beginners as it is not long and virtually no or few bunkers. This course is never busy, and locals are good about letting quicker players play through. I have walked 9 and played two balls on every hole and finished in just over an hour. The course itself is in the middle of condos, or small homes with no views of significance.

Good Value

I played this course in December and for being in the winter this course was in good shape. Fairways were green and lush and overall condition was surprisingly good. My only (minor) complaint were the greens. The staff did a nice job with them, they were not too fast not too slow and they held approach shots nicely. However, keep in mind this is a public course and there were obvious ball marks on almost every green from fellow golfers. I would fix my ball mark and three or four others on every hole.
The course was a fun resort course to play, some fairways were house lined and it was fairly wide open. Staff was friendly and heplful. Great views of mountains and lots of palm trees to make you feel you are on vacation.
I paid $100 ish for two range tokens and an noontime start on a Monday. Close to downtown area of Palm Springs so not a lot of travel time from the hotel,

Expected Private Experience

This a private club with two courses and I played the Lakeside Course. I went with a member as a guest but was treated as a member as the staff was top notch. I am not from California, but this seemed like a quiet retreat from the crowded East Bay Area. Rolling hills and elevation changes provided many of the holes with impressive views. Course is not a driver on every hole type course, pretty well designed, not just straight down on every hole. I played from the combo (Whites and Blues) mens tees which was very playable as many of the par fours were not long, but had dog legs or other natural features (large trees, etc.) which made placing your tee shots a premium to position your second shot to attack the flagstick. For California struggling with water, the fairways and rough was greens were hearty, although other non playable areas was brown and dry. Greens were in excellent shape and appropriate speed, not slow but not US Open fast. I tend to be a high ball hitter, but the green received and held fairway woods and hybrids fine. I would play this course again if I get the chance, this was a good experience.

Scotland in the USA

Quite simply. You will not find Scotlish links like this anywhere else in the US. Many courses in the US try to say they are a links course, but this is exactly the type of links golf they play in Scotland. True links golf requires...1. To be on the ocean. 2. To use the natural dunes and topography as the architechural foundation for course design. 3. Has the tight fairways neceesay to play to rolling shots links golf requires. 4. Utilizing prevailing winds as the courses main defense.
Bandon Dunes meets all of these requirements without you leaving the US. It is hands down the best value for the quality of golf you will be playing. Pebble Beach has the history and the luxurious feel, but this is half the cost and just as memorable. This is a must play, bucket list expereince all avid golfers must experience. Bandon Dunes course was in excellent condition when I played (for the eigth time). The greens were fast and perfect, the fairways were firm but not browned out, allowing me to putt from close to one hundred yards from the green, and play running punch shots with my irons. The weather was 63 degrees and sunny with 10-20 mph winds sustained. You must plan your next trip to Bandon!

Solid Value Course

This course is a good value for the golf. Greens are in good shape, but not very fast. Some fairways can have some little soggy wet spots (even in the summer) or some rough spots. The course is at least interesting layut, quite, and requires something other than driver on some non par threes which is nice. I think for the money it is a good value, and fun to play.
