La Cala Resort - America Course
Played On 08/29/2015Spectacular tee shots
I stayed at La Cala and played the America and Asia courses. America is the best and offers some spectacular tee shots (particularly the opening drive on hole 1). Asia is much narrower and shorter but still enjoyable. Greens are in reasonable shape albeit fairly slow and bunker sand could do with topping up. Staff are fairly clueless and there seems an endless stream of paperwork if you are hiring clubs / buggy. All in an enjoyable experience, but not as good as some of the Med golfing options in places like the Algarve.
Grand Traverse Resort & Spa - The Bear Course
Played On 06/14/2015It's right up there...
... with the best courses I've played in Michigan. We played on a drizzly day so the course was wide open and we got round in 3.5 hours. Greens are excellent and you will do well to average 2-putts or better. Fairways extremely generous and rough not so difficult as long as you stay out of the thick stuff. It's not as difficult as its reputation (the Bear didn't bite me) and it makes for a very enjoyable round.
The Leelanau Club At Bahles Farms
Played On 06/13/2015Excellent challenge
We visited this course as a warm up in advance of playing The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort, but it is more than a warm up and is an excellent course in its own right. I actually found it to be tougher than The Bear due to slightly narrower fairways lined by trees so errant drives to punished. Greens are in excellent shape. Well worth making the drive to play. Very close to awarding it 5 stars.
Lake Forest Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2015Enjoyable round
Good variety of wide open fairways and then some narrower holders through the woodland. Greens are pretty well maintained but lack any real undulations or challenge - 3 putts are all your own fault!
University of Michigan Golf Course
Played On 05/17/2015Ann Arbor's Augusta
First class course with some of the most challenging greens you will find in Michigan. Perfectly maintained tee boxes, fairways and greens up to PGA Tour standard. A fantastic golf experience.
Huron Hills Golf Course
Played On 05/10/2015Go to the range instead...
Terrible greens, don't expect to make any putts. Short, narrow and with poor drainage - you will find yourself hitting lots of wedges off wet ground, expect fat shots aplenty. If this course was not funded by exorbitant Ann Arbor property taxes it would be unviable.
Chemung Hills Golf Club
Played On 05/02/2015Interesting, narrow course. Shame about greens.
Interesting old style course with narrow fairways cut between the woodland meaning anything other than 'out of the middle' drives are punished and lost balls are commonplace. It's a nice challenge but there is 1 problem - the greens are in terrible shape, which is a shame because in the places where they are OK the greens are fast and challenging. It's worth playing once, but given the choice in the area you're not likely to play it much more than that in a season.
Leslie Park Golf Course
Played On 04/19/2015Good but there is better in A2
Leslie Park is much better than it's sister course Huron Hills, but in my view there are better choices in A2. LP has some nice views, interesting hilly terrain and with narrow fairways on some holes can be challenging. Greens are adequate but not great so your putting scores may suffer a little. Quite a few walkers on the course at times which can really slow things down, particularly at the height of summer. Staff are excellent, very friendly. Clearly the U of M course and Radrick Farms are the best in A2 but if you can't get on those I would recommend trying Stonebridge ahead of Leslie Park.
Pierce Lake Golf Course
Played On 04/18/2015Excellent greens!
Very enjoyable course with some of the best greens for a public course that I have came across. Very enjoyable, I will definitely be returning this season.
Stonebridge Golf Club
Played On 04/12/2015Great course for early season loosener
Enjoyable course for the bogey golfer. Challenging but not too difficult with fairly wide fairways and forgiving rough. Greens in good condition and it is never too busy here so pace of play is good. Golfers are spoiled for choice in A2 but this course is definitely worth a visit.
