The Homestead Resort - Old Course
Played On 09/02/2019Course is outstanding, minor issues with minor issues.
1st time here but my dad has been on several golf trips w his crew and I've heard all about it. I was psyched! The course was in immaculate shape. I hated to take a divot! It seemed sacrilegious. Greens were soft, held a proper iron shot into them, and all quality putts broke true. It was quick though. Don't leave a downhill putt if you can help it. Bunkers were in perfect shape. They obviously put in effort to maintain this course. Fair layout but punished a wayward drive for sure. The best thing I can say is that every hole was unique. There are a number of courses that have switchback and forth holes that mirror each other and have no character than their one design. At the Olde course every hole is a unique adventure.
Now the critiques. I couldn't find the pro shop without a Sherpa guide. How about a sign on Rte220 that says 'pro shop this way'! It took 15 min, and directions from the hotel staff (hotel is not near pro shop) to get where I needed to be. Then, there was no parking there. I had to use the 'downtown' dirt lot that was almost full, walk from 1/4 mi away to get back to where I left my bag. Then when I left I strapped it all on my back and hoofed it back. That needs to be fixed ASAP. Maybe a golf cart shuttle? I can handle the walk but the elderly golfers I know would have had a problem with that.
I will be back with some golf buddies soon if the VSGA discount offer continues for sure. I wouldn't play anywhere for >$100 though. I may even plan an over night golf trip and hit Cascades and Olde course in succession if the price is right.... now that I know where to park. ;)

Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech
Played On 07/06/2019Course Designed by a master on relatively flat land
Played here on a golf trip in heat of July yet the course was well watered. It was a real treat. This course really made you think about each shot, where to hit, where not to. Some local knowledge would have been helpful but that's true of any course you play the 1st time. The front 9 holes were a good variety, the last 8 though seemed to be very similar and uninspiring though. I could tell from the green complexes that a master designer made this course. With such flat land next to the river he did a great job with only flat terrain to work with.
Course was in OUTSTANDING condition, especially considering the heat. Water was available often enough though.
I have to note that the staff was AMAZING and helpful and friendly. They were top notch! The lady behind the counter at the pro-shop in particular was very helpful. I drove 2 hours to get there and they didn't have my tee time reserved (despite calling a week in advance, and confirming the day before). She made it work and I got in no problem. I will absolutely be back for another golf trip w the guys.
Club house restaurant was great too. Reasonable prices on most things and great cider options on draft.

Hanging Rock Golf Club
Played On 07/05/2019wonderful value in heart of Shenandoah valley
Played on my own on 7/5 but was paired up with a 2-some on the front 9. Course was in amazing shape for how hot its been. Staff was INCREDIBLY friendly. Greens were fast and a bit sloped here and there but not totally unfair. Loved the challenging layout. You need to have accuracy off the tee or risk the woods. The part I liked best was that each hole was unique. It wasn't a cookie cutter course where all the holes are the same. Take your camera because the views are spectacular. Only 4 of 5 stars b/c a two some of members wouldn't allow me through after 5 holes. Eventually had to go around them and circle back to missed hole (a-holes). That seems to be a minority of the folks out there though. I will be back and bringing friends on golf trips when I'm in the area. It was a great experience.
Lake Monticello Golf Course
Played On 04/26/2018Face full of mud
Played this course in late April when I would have expected at least OK conditions. Most of the fairways and tee boxes were mud. I actually found myself moving my ball to the rough to get a better lie. How sad is that! The greens were OK and I enjoy the layout (except the 9th hole - limit tee shot to 200 yards to avoid water and then still have 200 to the green on a par 4??). I wont be back until I see some reviews here that say they have better conditions than muddy fairways and sand/mud tee boxes.
Wintergreen Resort - Stoney Creek Monocan/Tuckahoe
Played On 08/25/2017elitist staff will make you feel small
I live locally and try and play here at least 1/year. I won't be back after today. The snarky, elitist attitudes of the staff are just too much to handle anymore. Its a repeated theme here for years. This is not Augusta National and you are not the only golf course within driving distance. The condition of the course is average at best and the layout and difficulty of the course borders on being unfair. When I drop a ball on the green and rolls all the way across and off the front you have the green shaved too close. If you like to 3 and 4 putt....be looked down upon by the staff, and want to over pay for a course in mediocre condition, this place is for you.
