Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa - Old Course
Played On 04/23/2018Great Parkland Course
Formby Hall is an affordable gem on England's Golf Coast, if you are looking for a nice course without paying the prices of the more well renown courses in the area look no further.
My flat mates and I first played Formby Hall in the winter months where the course had survived and dried well in comparison to other parkland courses in the area. Holes 14 and 15 can sometimes retain the wet due to their lower nature in comparison to the rest of the course, by overall the course has always been in fantastic condition. We are now members at the club and play at least once per week, rarely being disappointed with the quality of FHGC. I have now played FHGC more times than I could even count, and would strongly recommend to golfers of all abilities.
Every hole provides golfers with different set of challenges with bunkers, water and distance making Formby a true test of golf. There are a number of attackable holes on the course and it is important to score well on these where possible.
Leasowe Golf Club
Played On 04/22/2018Fantastic Course at Great Value
My friend and I booked Leasowe as a last minute deal on a Sunday afternoon. The course was in fabulous condition and relatively empty as I believe we followed out a seniors competition earlier in the day.
The course was very good for the price we paid and had some fantastic feature holes, especially the front nine - new visitors appreciate the first few holes the most, they are arguably the most picturess. The back nine is also great however, holes 14, 15 and 16 do feel a little 'up and back' as you literally just walk up and down adjacent holes and lack clear features (such as dunes or raised greens etc.). This is what is preventing Leasowe becoming a top, top course to be mentioned with the like of Wallasey and West Lancs.
I would strongly recommend this course to anyone looking for fantastic links golf but not wanting to pay a premium. Leasowe is the perfect example of good affordable golf.
Allerton Manor Golf Club - 9-hole Course
Played On 04/19/2018Blistering Allerton Does It Again!
I played Allerton on the scorchingly hot Thursday just gone, the course was in good condition and very dry in comparison to the dampness experienced during the winter months.
For a beginner golfer Allerton is ideal - no par fives and a few reachable par fours mean golf is good fun and relatively easy for all. The conditions were great and it was a perfect day for golf. Only minor niggle being to temporary greens that were in play what seemed needlessly as the greens looked immaculate.
A great 'fun' course for the not-too-serious golfer and fantastic bar facilities - a beer in the sun was most welcome. Keep it up Allerton!
Worldham Golf Club
Played On 04/07/2018Great Value for Money!
The quality of the course was fantastic for the time of year, fairways were immaculately cut, greens played very fast and pins were cut to challenging positions. The course does lack some definition and there's scope to add a lot more features to the holes, but for the money paid this is an excellent course - especially the conditions. Would recommend Worldham to anyone.
Widnes Golf Club
Played On 11/12/2017Average and Wet Golf - Dissapointed
Two of us played Widnes during the winter months (November). The course was absolutely sodden and it was often hard to find (even low) drives which often plugged in the middle of the fairway yet alone the rough where balls were impossible to find. Greens were soaked and left footprints everywhere - the course doesn't offer much challenge and isn't exactly picturess. It is often also unclear which green you should be aiming for due to the cramped nature of the golf course and high risk of balls straying from neighbouring holes. Not a course for an inexperienced golfer.
Widnes' saving grace were its friendly members, who did warn us of the wetness of the course and were exemplary throughout. However, this could not be taken away from the cowboy nature of the course. For the sake of the members and to keep some money coming into the club I'd be tempted to try again during the summer months but only for a bargain price. Disappointed.
