Awarii Dunes Golf Club
Played On 11/03/2020Fall conditions - less than ideal
An interesting links course. Layout could certainly be very challenging with windy conditions.
Unfortunately, I played apparently the last week the course was to be open for the year. The greens were all aerated and rather bumpy, very much a factor. Fairways were being topdressed with sand, so about 1/3 of them were nearly sand traps.
Staff was pleasant.
Course is probably much better in summer when it's not being put to bed for the winter.
Arrowood Golf Course
Played On 01/30/2016Challenging but playable
Fast hard greens with occasional nearly impossible pin positions make it fairly challenging. Fairways wide enough for somewhat errant shots. Nice layout and good staff.
Maderas Golf Club
Played On 01/25/2016Stay in the fairway
This is a challenging course. A lot of ravines, creek beds, hills, traps to make your game go south in a hurry. A couple of holes have blind landing areas with some hidden dangers, so if possible play with someone who knows the course.
Kapolei Golf Club
Played On 10/09/2015May be the best course on the West Side of Oahu
Kapolei golf course is an excellent facility on the Western Side of Oahu, very nearly equal to or better than Ko Olina.
The greens are typically reasonably fast, smooth with some undulation but not overly so. The greens are nearly all raised, so shots have to carry to the green to have a chance to be on. Most greens have 2 or 3 bunkers, sand is generally consistent with a couple of them being a bit on the hard side. Fairways good with few, if any brown or dead grass. Depending on when you play, if the rough has been allowed to grow, it can be rather difficult. Not many trees to contend with and a couple of water hazards that are not terribly difficult to play around.
Maintenance is excellent and the course is one of the best as far as conditions.
Staff are professional, friendly and accommodating. Good practice area, but you have to hit off of mats.
Negatives
Pace of play can be slow. The course caters to tourists and some of them find it hard to play a 4 hour round. The course has stopped having course marshals monitor play, so if you get behind a slow group, it's going to be long round.
Pricing is upper tier and management seems to not want many local players by keeping pricing significantly higher than nearby courses.
The Quarry Golf Course
Played On 02/04/2015Damp day - Interesting Course
Had a bit of time between meetings, so tried my luck at the quarry course on a somewhat damp cool February morning.
Booked a 9:40 tee time, caught a cab from downtown for $22 and arrived an hour early for my tee time. Check in was smooth, clubs put on cart as soon as I walked up. Reservation handled with no problem. Clubhouse stocked with most everything you might need.
Had time to go to the range before tee time. Furnished with 2 bags of range balls, probably about 40 in total. Range is irons only and you do hit off of grass. Chipping and putting green right next to the driving range.
Starter at number 1 gave advice on 1st hold, a short hole with a very drivable hazzard that's not easily seen. Unfortunately it had rained the day prior so the course was a bit wet, cart path only, so I got my exercise walking to my ball. Rough certainly not a place to be with fairly high grass, typical of links course. Fairways in good shape, greens held the ball pretty well and were of reasonable speed.
As others have mentioned the front is a links course, the back a little more traditional and carved out of the remains of the quarry.
Due to the temperature not many golfers out that day, so played fairly quickly.
Nice course and certainly worth a shot if you're in the San Antonio area.
