Spring Golf

Course has a few interesting holes- the last two might be the pick of them. Otherwise it’s not terribly long, and from the winter mats for tees, was playing quite short- quite a few par 4s with a wedge second shot (and we are not long hitters)

Course rather/very wet and soft in places but it has been a terribly wet winter. I wouldn’t rush back (an hour from home for both us) but I would play again if in the area for some reason.

Were let through after a couple of holes, and otherwise we almost played to our own pace. Bar and shop staff friendly. Drinks reasonably priced.

Breezy, Blowy and a little slow

A second to visit to Bedale promised to be very enjoyable. Teeing off after 5pm however I found the light quite tricky, and spent time hunting for balls on those shots into the sun. The wind was up a bit which made distance control- and direction- a bit trickier.

Having had no one in front for the first 9 or so holes, the round ground to a halt. By the 16 I played the hole 4 times, walked to the 17th tee and the group in front still hadn’t even teed off. A normal round for me is 2h20-2h30 (knocking 2 balls usually). I was over 3.5 which felt like an age.

Still, for £15 for Twilight golf I’m not too vexed.

Evening summer golf

Skipton was an enjoyable round. Having got out before a rabbits match, we were able to play at our own pace. The course was very well presented, and the greens were running true.

While not the longest course (all the par 5s for this player reachable in two), there is a lovely variety of hole, with my favourite stretch been 15–18: a short narrow dog leg par four where a good drive leaves a chip on to a green guarded by a stream, returning over the stream to a mid length par 3 from an elevate tee, then to stroke 1 longish par 4 (again dog leg). Finally a deceptively ultra short par 4 up the hill to the club house.

Special mention to the greens which are full of slopes and borrows.

Fun little playground

The short course: what to say.

The staff seemed more interested in their own banter than serving the queue. Then they didn’t really offer a welcome or even an indication where the course was.

The couple in front had all the gear but seemed to be playing a policy of laying up on 60 yard (for her) holes. Painfully slow

The greens were not great at all- which given my reason for playing was to get some short game practice…

Finally, minor gripe: the course being incredibly short to start with only offered two full club shots. The tee markers were so far forward…

At £11 for 6 holes I’d expect a higher quality of presentation. Still, 5 pars was good practice for my midweek comp.

Saturday afternoon slog

Teeing off at the end of a late summer Saturday in a fairly blustery conditions all well on the first hole. On the second a chap appeared out of the trees before ditch, as we were walking down the hole (having driven off and landed over said ditch). He concluded his hole and then let us through. All was then well until the 5th where we caught up with a three ball- an older bloke and two young kids. The speed of play was abysmal thereafter, and they didn’t let us through. We thought of cutting holes but there were a number of groups further ahead.

The course was looking pretty- as you’d expect in august. Greens a little slow.

Good value Saturday (millionaire’s) golf

£20 often doesn’t buy much on a Saturday- if anything. However Richmond while perhaps not being the longest, hardest or most charismatic course in Yorkshire certainly was a pleasant surprise. Teeing off mid-afternoon I expected to play quickly and be held up by the tail of the day’s competitive golfers. As it was, I barely spotted another golfer. The howling winds might have done it- the winds certainly played havoc with my distance control but I thoroughly enjoyed the risk and rewards holes
- needing only a hybrid to drive the green on 17, while not seeing my tee shot on the charismatic 18th led to a pleasant surprise- and a birdie finish.

Highly recommended: I will return on a calmer day. Oh and bring your putter A game: the greens are fiendish in places.

Good value twilight golf

£15 for a twilight round in mid May. Four holes done in 20 minutes, then sadly caught up with a glacial stableford competition. Managed 9 holes in 2 hours, and I then skipped back to 1 to play a few more before the light was replaced by gloom.

Course in decent nick, although the greens weren’t as true as they might have been.

Walked

fair round

First round at Dunscar- not quite, but almost millionaire's golf, which is just as well, as it's quite compact and I would have been hoarse with the shouts of fore. It''s not a terribly long or difficult course (it wasn't windy on my visit) but there is some interest. The layout means it does feel a bit like going back and forth somewhat. Quite a few blind shots. But my only gripe really is that the greenkeepers seemed to repeatedly move from the green I was on to the next one. I had to wait for them quite a bit on a largely quiet course, and of course they had to wait for me to play my shot at times too.

It's not the best course in the area but nor is it the most expensive. Worth if it, like me, you enjoy the variety of playing different courses and get a decent green fee price.

14 holes for the price of 18

On previous visits heron’s has proved a useful, inexpensive winter option, as so many courses are on winter greens, mats etc.

On this occasion however, nowhere on GolfNow did it say that four of the 18 holes were closed. We paid for something we didn’t receive. Buyers beware!

Course soggy but not a surprise given the time of year. Tees very forward, so very short course but lots of plugging balls in difficult winter sun meant more than a few lost balls.

Summer evening golf

Having not played Blackburn for a couple of years, it was pleasant surprise to pop along for a quick round on a June evening. Teeing off at 6:30, round in 130 minutes- only saw one other group and they let me through quickly. Course is the best I’ve seen it- marvellous firm but still quite green. Greens ran nicely. A bargain for the twilight rate. Recommended.

Not a bad course.

Herons reach is often overbooked but on this autumnal day it was good. There is a mixture of holes, and despite a few soft areas it has withstood the weather rather well. A few mundane holes don’t spoil the challenge and as the wind picked up, it becomes a battle. Certainly worth a look.

Course in fantastic condition.

Darwen is always a delight. I’ve not been since last year and it’s looking really, really good.

The greens are like ice rinks, but they run very true.

At £15, a bargain, my only minor gripe being finishing after 10pm in near darkness due to slightly slow pace of play.

Well recommended.

A peculiar winter round

The round started with a a brief hello to the person in the shop who was on the phone.

What happened next- very odd. First 11 holes , great. Then on the 12th- a sign- warning golfers to not play from the fairway- which thanks to a slight errant drive, was a moot point. Thereafter at the beginning of each fairway on par 4s there was a similar sign.

I thought I’d been clever and done my research- a tweet from last winter extolling the virtues of Wilpshire ‘no winter mats’ but I guess it’s too much to expect a course in Lancashire to remain fully open in cold, dark November.

Roll on April!

Decent compact course, warm welcome, unpleasant members.

What a day it was- beautiful weather, and a warm welcome in the clubhouse.

Playing alone, I was quickly at the tail of a three ball, who explained they were being held up by a slow four ball. After the sixth hole, thee three lost patience and cut to another part of the course. It was thus that I was no standing around in blazing sunshine frequently waiting ten minutes to play a shot. With this time to kill, I decided to ‘play against myself by keeping the score of two competing balls.

At the ninth green, my caddie went to the toilet, while I holed out and found some shade from the blazing heat of the day. It was probably the better part of ten minutes between playing into the green and walking to the tenth tee, so teed off, a rather long drive disappeared beyond the guidestick. Having no desire to catch the sloths in front I decided to have another go. 9 holes behind this group had taken me 2 hours 20 minutes- I wonder what their round time was.

Having walked to my ball i discover the group in front had still not reached the green. At the next tee, they had not really begun to tee off before I arrived, and one of the rudest people- no- the rudest person I have ever encountered on a golf course informed me that I had nearly hit him. I apologised- obviously, as there was no one in sight and certainly not intended. Nevertheless he continued berating me until his own party pointed out that that was enough or perhaps he might like to go play the hole.

A few holes later I was accosted by a second Curt member who pointed out my shirt was untucked (can’t argue with club rules), and that practise was not allowed. I pointed out that I had now been stuck for quite some time (I generally get round in 2h30) and was frustrated that the group in front has shown no awareness as to etiquette. He suggested I speak to them myself. Rather unhelpfully, when I have been stood at the same tee as the glacial golfers.

All in a sad day as I’ve enjoyed visits to Nelson before including the pro shop welcome, and my caddie was shaken by the confrontations.

Good value bank holiday golf

Nelson is not the longest- or the hilliest course in this part of the world. In common with many of the other course locally, it offers stunning views of the local area including the commanding contours of Pendle.

As always, the welcome in the pro shop was very warm. The course was reasonably busy- but the pace of play was pretty good.

I couldn't believe my eyes on the 10th fairway when it became apparent that a man had brought a troupe of young children to use the course as a play ground. One even took a liking to my ball!

The wind blew a little, but didn't spoil the enjoyment of this delightful course.

Serene sunday

Longridge is a good-value golf course- which is in good condition- clearly well-cared for.

On the occasion of my most recent visit, the greens had been cored and sanded, so it made putting something or a lottery.

The exposed position of the course means even a light breeze can feel like a howling gale in a few corners.

The holes near the clubhouse play longer or shorter due to the severe incline (17 is driveable comfortably)

One or two hazards to beware of - it's worth using a GPS or similar before unleashing a drive.

Saturday quietness

It was pretty quiet playing Saturday afternoon- by the time I got to hole 14 I was tailing the competition, but otherwise was able to play at my own pace after a group kindly let me through on six.

The course is in decent condition. The only thing to spoil it perhaps is the neighbouring par 5s that go up and down the hill in a straight line- with the prevailing wind they play similar distance (in my experience).

The greens were running true. A good test of golf.

Good value, good views

The last time I played Wilpshire, I needed diving gear and a tractor (cf 'Bog Snorkelling) so I had been reticent booking another round. A hot deal persuaded me that it wasn't much too find out if the course had improved much.

It had- a lot. Apart from a few corners (notably in the shade, for example the 18th tees) the course was dry, and in marvellous condition. The fairways looked excellent with well defined stripes (which for me gains many marks) and a clearly defined first cut of rough.

The more one plays Wilpshire, the more fun it becomes - and easier. The greens run true- and are perhaps not the most contoured.

Since my last visit, a few holes seem to be playing a little longer- in particular the par 3s on the back nine- you'll need a good mid iron to take those on.

A good course where it isn't always prudent to use the driver off the tee. Recommended.
