Just OK

It’s really hard to get an accurate set of expectations from the mixed reviews so I’ll write a fair review from a golfer who plays all around the DFW area multiple times a week in hopes this helps others like me. For $25 to walk 18, it’s a decent value but you have to have correct expectations. I’ll give the staff credit, they were very nice. The people I got paired with were equally as nice and friendly. As for the course. The greens were in decent shape but are slow. They are slower than bear creek, Indian creek and grapevine to give you a good measure. I have played all of those courses multiple times in the last month. The tee boxes are horrible, like hitting off of bad driving range grass. Most, not all, of the fairways are decent but they are hard as rock in a lot of places, but good enough grass, but definitely not anything close to the 3 courses mentioned above. The bunkers were not raked and hard as concrete. My group just ended up moving the balls out of the bunkers since they were so bad by the turn. The course is a moderate test of golf and there are multiple holes with water. Very easy course to walk and we played a 3 hour round as a 4-some with 3 carts and a walker. I won’t make the trip back out as there are courses that are closer to me that are in much better shape, but they do cost $10 more to play. If you want a cheap course, in just OK condition, then River chase will do the trick. If you want great conditions for $10 more, then all of the 3 I mentioned above are far better choices.

Always a Solid Choice

I have played Riverside a few times and each time I ask myself why I always forget about how nice Riverside is. Tee to green is always well kept. Tee boxes are in great repair, the fairways are carpet and the bunkers are deep fluffy sand. There is some water in play on a few holes and if you don’t play with someone that has played there before then you better download a GPS app, cause there are holes that you have no clue how they play.
What makes this course tough? Water, many doglegs with blind shots, fairway bunkers everywhere, forced carries, rolling fairways and there are some extremely small and tight greens.
Speaking of the greens. They were punched on Tuesday 7/16/19 so they are freshly recovering. They lowered their rates to accommodate for that and for $20 you can get out during the week right now. I normally would never recommend a freshly punched course but for $20, the rest of the course makes it worth it. Any to be completely honest, they filled the holes and they rolled slow but not overly bumpy. I think by the end of next week they will fill in a little and by the end of July might be smooth. I have played here before the greens were punched and they roll fast and true.
It is more of a links style course with very little protection, but the greens are not cut into the fairway, but you can see the entire front 9 from just about every hole. The back is in the trees and a little more hidden.
I like to walk and there is fresh, cold water every 2-3 holes and we saw the cart lady 3 times in our 3 and ½ hour round.
As you can tell the pace of play (at least early in the am) was spectacular. There were 2 pairs in front of us and a 4 some behind us and nobody of any of those groups every waited. 3.5 means that your done before it turns triple digits which makes it some much nicer.
Great little course right off the highway and always well kept. Wait a week or 2 if you need smooth greens or catch a discount right now for the course experience and just deal with the greens as another form of challenge.

Decent round, would play again

The tradition was a nice course with a few headaches but all in all was a great round. The staff was friendly, and everyone was nice. I set up a single tee time for 7:35 and when I got there they told me the 3-some they paired me with became a 4-some and I got bumped to 7:58. That was very frustrating since I had a meeting in Dallas later that afternoon, but it wasn’t horrible, and I understand. They gave me some range balls but overall starting my day like that was frustrating.

Then to add to my frustration nobody that worked there told me that the tradition course was .25 miles from the clubhouse down an access road and that there was a parking lot down there.

So, I walked down and then had to walk back after the round, which just added to the distance and frustration which I took out on the #1 tee box, hahah.

As luck would happen, it worked out. I was paired with 2 easy going gentlemen who knew the course and happened to be retired Navy like I was. We got along great and the pace was fantastic. Walked the course in under 4, only pushing the group in front of us on 2 holes and never saw anyone behind us.

Conditions were mostly decent. Fairways were nice, bunkers were decent, but the greens were interesting. They rolled well and true, but there were some patches on the edge that never came into play for us. They cut the rough thick and it was challenging in some parts. The layout was nice, and some very challenging holes had I not had some previously experienced partners with me.
I like to walk when I play so I appreciated the water every 3 holes and the Mango ice towels every 7 or 8 holes. It was a hot day by the end of the round, but it was worth it. The price was fine, and they gave military discount to me which was very nice.

I would play this course again if I ever come back down to Houston. I would recommend this course as well to those in the area.

#2 in the area according to me!

A buddy of mine flew in from the Northeast to play 4 days’ (fri (18), sat (36), sun (36), mon (18)) worth of golf. We played Cowboys (x2), Texas Star, Coyote Ridge (x2), and Tierra Verde. I will compare them with a few different reviews, but to short and sweet, they are all ridiculous courses and even in March had great conditions, you can’t go wrong with any.
Texas star was our last round on Sunday (round #5) and it had a lot to live up to but did not disappoint.
First the clubhouse was great, and people mobbed the grill and were not even playing golf, that’s how good the food is. The practice area is top notch and might be one of the best in area. Multiple elevations and locations to hit shots, a huge and accurate putting green and a mammoth chipping area and all this complete with free balls.
The course conditions were really good and in about a month will be almost unmatchable. The greens even now in March were rolling true to about a 13. Lighting for this time of year, I can’t imagine In May.
This course is hard…. ill say that again…this course is hard…. definitely the hardest course of the ones mentioned above. I hope you play with someone that has played there before when you try it.
The staff was great. The carts were cushy, and the hospitality was on point. We will be back in about a month to play this as a staple of my 4-some Dallas takeover.

Definitely one of the top in the area

A buddy of mine flew in from the Northeast to play 4 days’ (fri (18), sat (36), sun (36), mon (18)) worth of golf. We played Cowboys (x2), Texas Star, Coyote Ridge (x2), and Tierra Verde. Tierra Verde was our Sunday Morning round (round #4). Nestled in between the south boundaries of Dallas and Fort Worth, you would never know there are a few Million people around you. Each hole is separated, and each hole was unique. The conditions were great and in April ill be back again to see if they are impeccable like I think they will be with some sun and attention.
We had a 3-hour 10-minute round as we played through the 4-some in front of us at hole #2 and never saw anyone again, albeit we had an 8:20-tee time. Very few flat spots in the fairway so if you don’t like being above or below the ball then you might now like this course. I love undulations and this place was special with them.
Bunkers were fine and sandy. The rough wasn’t overgrown but they could make this course near impossible if they let the natural stuff grow out. not too much water except for a few holes and a super fun par 3 peninsula.
The staff was overly friendly and accommodating and we appreciate the hospitality. The club house nice and had everything you needed. The practice area was sufficient.
There were some little winter sprigs poking through some of the greens which is the one and only criticism, but with some dry warm weather they will be gone in a jiffy. Although the greens still rolled excellent and were challenging and curvy.
We have a 4-some yearly golf trip we moved from myrtle to Dallas (which is a far better experience in all respects except for no ocean) and this will become one of our must plays on the list. Believe the hype from all the reviews you read, this track is excellent.

Still #1

We played Cowboys all day (36) on Sunday. We got there for breakfast, played 18, had lunch and a few drinks, played 18 more then stayed after for dinner. If you break that down it turns $250 into an actual decent deal and you get a, superior to most, golf course as cowboys is #1 for a reason.
The staff are amazing from the great young ladies working the bar and carts to the pros hop team to the management. The food is top notch and ill give you an example. When my buddy comes down we play all day and the loser after 36 pays for dinner and drinks the rest of the night. The loser picks where to go. Friday (the day before) I won and chose Perry’s steakhouse which was excellent and expensive, so I made losing to me hurt even more. When we were done with cowboys and I was again victorious, I chose to stay at cowboys since I knew their 7oz filet was awesome from previous experience. The meatballs and devilled eggs are some of the best I’ve had in Dallas. The food is really good for any of the meals. Just make sure you take advantage of it or you are missing out.
The course was in great shape from tee to green, no complaints at all. Having played there a few times before I know the greens will be faster in a few weeks but still rolled true and were quick. The driving range is spectacular complete with bunkers at varying distances, that’s right bunkers down the driving range to hit around and practice your target golf shots. The clubhouse is an experience of its own and you will take a few pictures of the memorabilia and trophies.
Jerry does it right and ill be back many times. Plus, during the week, they really show their appreciation to military with $99 greens fees. Being a military man myself I cannot express how appreciated that gesture is. Thanks for the great time and ill be back in about a month when my 4-some convenes to take over Dallas golf for a few days.

Nice round on the west side

Bear creek is a tough little course with some blind shots and forced carries. it also had something ive never seen before...a flag that your supposed to raise and lower for blind shots to let the tee box know its safe to hit. interesting idea. ive always seen bells to ring or gps but not a bag idea, if used, which the group in front of us did not. the conditions were really good, but super tight lie fairways in some spots. also a few of the par 3 tee's were beat up pretty bad. the bunkers could use some grooming as they were hard but seemed like enough dirt. had to use a wedge with less bounce to hit well out of them. greens were where this course shined and im a huge greens guy. fast and true from what i saw. got a little faster as the day wore on. really nice design and very pretty hole views. the one thing ill comment on and its not huge just not my preference and its the first time ive seen this in Dallas...gas powered carts? there were a few elevated tees but nothing electric couldn't handle. overall a great round, right at 4 hours with multiple groups in front of us. we saw the ranger 4-5 times, no doubt keeping pace, which was well appreciated. thanks alot bear creek, will be back again.

Fossil creek was solid

ive played 6 rounds now in Dallas and every other round someone mentioned fossil creek, so the build up and expectations were high. like a movie that you highly anticipate im not sure it lived up to the lofty expectations but it was a good round. the greens had been punched last week but really didnt affect the roll of the ball, just maybe the speed as i can see these greens being fast once the holes are gone. dont get me wrong, the greens were still fine and rolled pretty well. the pace was 4 hours and 10 minutes and we had 2 4-somes in front of us so right at target pace. the fairways were mostly nice, the 2 traps i found had adequate sand and were raked. the tee boxes were good and there was plenty of grass for irons off the tee. the track was fun and challenging and unforgiving. highly recommend playing with someone who knows the course or just make sure you are right next to the 150 marker or you may not have a shot even with what seems to be a fantastic tee shot. im coming back when the greens get completely filled in, but i really liked this course. top 3 for me so far.

not sure how to rate this course

i really want to rate this course higher as it has some great holes, but the conditions were all over the place. ill say that the greens were fine, punched about a week ago but did not affect the ball at all as they have come back nicely and are relatively quick. some fairways are nice and grassy and soft, then others are muddy and other yet dry and with huge bare spots. the tee boxes were very uneven so i just had to get creative. only saw one bunker and it was fine. there was decent amount of loose sand to control the shot. i played the first 13 in an hour and a half with nobody in-front of me but then at 14, it took me another hour and 20 minutes to finish the last 5 holes. still a great round under 3 hours starting at 915. i will give this course another shot but not for a while. im a huge greens guy and can usually deal with the other stuff, which is why im fine with this course and for the money, its worth it.

4th round in Dallas didn't disappoint (creek course review)

i want to start by saying, go on thier website and get thier online deals....$29 weekday is a steal for this course. the greens rolled great, but had the occasional pot hole based on golfers that didnt fix thier marks...i ended up fixing 2-3 on just about every other hole, but definitely not the courses fault. the fairways were solid, with some wet spots that seemed to be on lower ground but overall were pretty good. tee boxes were fine with grass and mostly level. i can only attest to 2 traps and they were both fine with plenty of sand deep enough not to hit the bottom dressing. i will definitely play the Creek course many times if they keep up the conditions today. the reason for not 5 stars...the pace...i tee'd off at 9:18...was walking by myself, played through 1 foursome who gladly let me pass, and then made the turn at 10:50. awesome hour and half front 9. then right at the turn i hit the field. 3- two somes behind a 4 some who were behind a 5 some of walkers. over a two and half hour back 9 is unacceptable on a friday morning. no ranger the entire round. if you add it up yes i had exactly a 4 hour round, but you need to have the context to understand my rating for pace. i really wish they would send a ranger out once every hour or so to just check the pace. other than that (and that wont deter me from playing again soon) i loved this course. im hoping this was a one time thing and maybe the ranger was ill today cause the pace forced the two some in front of me to leave all together.

Third round in Dallas may have been the best

played Champions in FW, Sky creek in Keller, and my third round this week was Coyote Ridge. very impressive course. a mix of both of the other 2 courses i played. fast-ish greens, lush fairways, blind shots all over the place, great staff, the ladies in the 19th hole were awesome. i recommend trying to get paired with someone who has played there before as this is a challenging course if you have never played there like me. all 3 of these courses are awesome and i think the culmination of the 3 hour, 10 minute round combined with the 19th hole made coyote just edge out the other 2. thanks for a great day. i was on the green and 3 putted number 7...you will see what i mean when you play...good luck winning the 5K

Mix between Pinhurst #2 and Tobacco rd.

If you only remember one thing from my write up, then I hope it is “Go Play Dormi Club”. Great track, great folks. Title says it all. The course designers used anything and everything natural-wise they could to design this course. The woods and rough are all big trees and long bushes. The tee boxes are lined with trees that they knocked down when building the course (artistically though, tough to describe). Natural obstructions everywhere. Waste bunkers all over the place with natural NC clay. There isn’t a flat spot on any green that we could find. Not a lot of water in play but fairway bunkers and long waste areas travel down the fairway with ya. Elevation changes and blind shots on a lot of the holes. Greens were punched about a week ago, but they rolled excellent for still having holes. I bet these greens are very nice when fully recovered. All in all a very nice course. My only gripe is the cost. I would play here much more if it was more like $70 for a round vs. the $100 we paid (and it goes way up during the season). I come from the land of amazing golf for $50 so the prices in the sand hill area keep me away a lot of the time. other than the price, this has become one of my favorites in NC.

Nice day at LP

Played here many times over the past few years. The conditions this time were some off the best I've experienced. Staff was great as always. Pace was right at 4 hours for the 4 some group in front of us so We never really had to wait. Greens rolled very true. Didn't measure but I'd guess they were rolling probably a 10 or an 11. Only gripes were the tee boxes on all of the par 3's. They were very bad. Just about no grass. Very surprising after hitting off of all off the other nicely groomed tee boxes. I haven't played here yet this year as the price is imo way to too high for the area. Allot of great golf can be had in the Raleigh area for under $50 and without any deals LP is $82??? I happen to catch a golfnow deal for a single. Over all the course is great but expensive to play often.

Wilmar vs. Lochmere

played Lochmere Friday morning and Wilmar Saturday morning. so ill write the contrast review for both, hopefully it helps someone decide the one they want to play. both were on the shorter side, not much elevation change, but alot of doglegs and hazards to be found. i haven't found a nicer set of greens in Raleigh yet than at Wilmar (chapel ridge, preserve, neuse..all have nice greens as well, but these were amazing this weekend)...I play 1-2 times a week all around. the ball rolls true and they were cut perfect when i played. Lochmere's greens were just OK, with some nice ones and some damaged ones but overall above average. the fairways at Wilmar were kept decent and in some spots there looked like some winter damage but all in all not bad. Lochmere has the hardest fairways ive ever played. i got 20-30 yards extra roll off of the longer irons and woods than normal and im not exaggerating. that would be nice in a few instances except when you try to take a decent control divot. its was hard as a rock. so its amazing for boosting the ego off of the tee, but hard to control based on hitting off of very compact clay. both courses were short from the blues overall. at Lochmere it was due to every hole being short yardage. at Wilmar there are 3 par 3's and 3 par 5's per side. with some decently long holes. neither course is particularly hard. Wilmar gives a Military discount which was nice. Lochemere was $30 to walk so that's not bad either. for this area anyways. not sure which course ill play again based solely on location for Wilmar and the hard fairways for Lochmere. hope this helps.

play from the tips if you want a real challenge. course is long and tight in some spots, hit over water or marsh on many holes and you close out the round with a 230+ cary over water if playing from tips or championship tees. first timers should get a course card for best results, overall great track.
