Don’t Sienna Reason to Return

The course is in an unkept condition. I don’t think the fairways or tee boxes have been punched and sanded in over 3 years. The maintenance crew doesn’t seem to know what to do— they had several busted sprinkler heads around the greens and the response was shoveled sand on the wet spots. While waiting on a tee box a groundskeeper drove his cart over the tee box (probably adding to very hard tee boxes). Numerous times I had to hammer my tee into the ground with my driver because they were so hard. The fairways were also very firm, which i found made the course more interesting from a playing perspective... Some good shots ended up in the rough or awkward lies because of the roll. The challenge was good but the firm fairways did a number on the golf carts. My cart had lost its break lock function so I had to cut the wheel like parking a car uphill.

I also found it very frustrating that none of the tee boxes had yardage markers on the par 3s. There is a tee marker with the yards, but nothing on the actual hitting surface so you were guessing yardage if the tees were moved. The fairway markers were easier to find, but not as many as you’d want. Speaking of finding your distances, it was often difficult to find the next hole. There’s several places where carts cross under or over the roads but no signage saying you should cross or not (it was also confusing because sometimes the cart path would meet up with a sidewalk— thereby making it hard to know the right way)

The greens were in good condition, especially compared to the rest of the course. They seem to be watered and cut well, and rolled pretty smooth. A lot of greens had unprepared divots. The green on 10 looked like the moon— I wondered if someone was actually chipping from the green because the gashes were larger than a divot.

Anyhow, I play a lot of golf around the Houston area and for $40 on a weekday this course is not worth the money. There are plenty of other courses in the same price range that are much better.

Great Course, indifferent staff

Golf Club of Houston is a wonderful course; it is always well maintained and challenging to play. We played on a Saturday and expected the course to be packed- which it was- but the place of play was good (4 hr 35 min round).

After checking in we went outside to get a cart, they were out. We went back inside to notify the pro shop staff member about the cart situation, but he couldn't be bothered. He didn't call back to the cart barn or make an effort to do anything helpful, like explain the situation. So we waited 15 minutes for a cart to arrive, which cut into our time to warm up before teeing off. The baggage strap on our cart was broken so had to exchange it on the range--- that caused more confusion but the starter was at least able to get another cart..

I expect Saturdays to be busy and understand some players prefer one to a cart due to COVID-19, but the lack of carts isn't the problem. The issue was the indifference from the pro shop staff to be helpful.
