Sandy greens

Atascocita unfortunately is within the lake Houston flood zone. It must be hard to maintain with the ground so wet all the time. I know it is not going to be country club pristine when I play here. The design is a fun play. The staff and marshals have always been nice and accommodating. I don’t know why golfnow does not disclose that the greens are recently sanded and have more sand then some of the bunkers. Otherwise it was a nice cool day in Houston to play a round of cheep golf.

Wasted away again in Margaritavill

I play this course frequently. The staff is always helpful and friendly. Course layout is long for those of us who can’t drive the ball longer then 250 yards. It has a few bunker drainage issues and some bare spots in the fairway on a few holes. Compared to the other public tracks in the area this one would be in top 5. First 9 is tight tree lined layout while the back 9 is a bit more open. The range is a good warm up range but not one to work on your tee shots on. The new owner is in the process of renovating the resort. Hopefully cart path and bunker drains are on the list for improvement on the course. It is a great test and a fun test. Just wish public would fix their divots and ball marks.

Where’s the grass

The course looks like it doesn’t have a sprinkler system. Bare, hum let me rephrase spots of grass surrounded by hard pan. The greens were splotchy with 3 types of grass. Course routing would be nice layout if someone would plant some grass and water it. Will not play again.

Bad day

Started off and had to play as a single because the starter sent my group of 15 min early. Good for them. Course was so wet that on the second hole I hit ball in the fairway leaving myself a shot where ball below my feet. I swung back and my feet sunk in the mud to the top of my shoes. Resulting in 3 holes to repair. The worst part of day happened on my 7 hole. There was a group of college kids standing on 8th tee hitting drive after drive until the guy's in front of me finished the 7th. The kids let them tee off. I finished as a single. The group in front of me just got to their ball. I got in my cart to go to 8 when the kids took off after their balls. I got on the tee box to watch these kids hit into the group in front. Then drop and hit again, then go to the other drives they had every which way and hit them. After 20 min of watching them tear the course up and still not go to green. I drove past them to the parking lot where I see three college buses in parking lot. Put my bag in the car and left. If this was just one group of Christian college kids not respecting the privilege of getting to play on our (Houstons) tournament course. I was not going to wait behind a course full of them the rest of the day. Do not know why golf now would offer tee time when a tournament was being played or why the Golf Club of Houston would for that matter. No respect for customers me and the group the kids were hitting into. It will be sometime for me to consider playing here again. I've yet to finish a round because of pace of play the 3 times I've played the Hot Deal after noon. 5-7 hr rounds I don't consider fun but watching kids tear up the 8th hole while waiting 20 min is definitely not what I consider a Hot Deal. Just a waste of my money.

Best day ruined by mother nature

Course is in great shape for winter in Houston. I had entire course to myself. No one wanted to play in 38 degree weather with 10 mph winds. Greens are perfect as always. I had the best score to date on this course going until the 12th hole. Then Mother Nature started dropped ice rocks from the sky that caused my ball to bounces offline on the 12th and 13th greens. All in all great day with the course to myself. Until hail froze and sent me home. Staff was great as always. Gave me a large coffee at the start of each nine for free.

Storm ravaged

The course was hit by bad weather the prior day to my play so walking only permitted. The elevation changes are quite unique until you have to walk them. Once course is cleaned up from the downed trees and limbs it will be much better. The greens are the trickiest I've played. Will go back under different conditions and only when carts are available. Guess I am that old.
Overall course is set up for target golf so expect narrow precise target locations or you will loose strokes. Takes a couple times to play to get your quadrants figured out so don't expect too low of a score your first time around. Would be great fun under different conditions. Right now I'm sore and wore out from playing billy goat up and down the mountain all day.

Dirt track.

This would be a beautiful course if it had grass instead of hard pan for fairways. Never seen a city owned course in all my travels this neglected. It is very hard to get your club on the ball when it is on hard pan between two clumps of grass in the middle of the fairway. I've heard of fairway hazards before but never the entire fairway a hazard. They should rent dune buggies in place of golf carts. You need shocks to drive across the fairways. Other then the poor course conditions, the brave souls that play there, the staff and facilities were Great. Not so great however to get me to waste $40 on again.

Hi, Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the course conditions. Your feedback about the course is important to us. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We are going to escalate your feedback to our team so we can make improvements before your next game.

Fun until the back 9

The course set up is pretty straight forward country club golf. Hole are bunkered perfectly to penalize the low ball hitter. Namely me. Six bunkers in 18 holes. The sand differs from front 9 to back 9. Fluffy round spheres on the front. If you let the bounce do it’s work you should get out easily. Back 9 was hard packed and if you don’t take a steeper angle you can bounce into the ball knocking it across the green. Greens on back 9 are more consistent. The front 9 had patches of what appeared to be different types of grass. Both surfaces were bumpy from many indentured but still fast enough to make you pay attention to your stroke. Fairways are mixed dormant grasses with into the grain shots being more penal then down grain shots. Rough on the front 9 your digging the ball out and not one ball sat on top of the 3” grass. The rough on the back 9 wasn’t bad unless hitting into the grain and it is not as consistent as the front. You can land in bare spots between two clumps of 2 inch grass. All in all the 1 hr and 20 min drive from my house was the worst part of the day. Course is fun until the group of members jump in front of you on the 10th tee. Then it is fun but slower. It is definitely a course you need to play to figure out the lines to hit your tee shots from. Since it is a long drive for me, it will be a course to go to for a change of pace. If you have a trip to Sugerland Richmond area by all means I would include my clubs to play.

Bitter cold but fun

First time back since Gus renovated. Layout basically the same just more open with bigger better bunkers. It was 45 degrees when we started with a 5-10 mph wind that just got colder as the day went on. It was fun layout. Would have been even more fun if I could stay out of the new bunkers. Greens in best shape I’ve ever seen them. Not fast fast but fast.

Future Margaritavill

Course is in ownership transition so not much improvement being done. It is maintained unless you hit it offline. You will have to deal with 8" grass rough. Great layout greens are good for this time of year except for 18 green. Someone burnt a 3' x 30 strip right down the middle. Very challenging tree lined layout. Somewhat like a park course with a couple elevation holes thrown in. If this course had Panarama's green it would be a tournament course.

Winter golf in Houston

This Is a nicely laid out links style course. There are some bare areas where grass will be needed to repair come spring. Over all fun to play when playing winter rules. You know lift, clean, place on some nearby grass, then proceed. National has very nice range and 19th hole. For the price of all you can play golf. Best deal around town if you have the energy. I would recommend to anyone who has not played it. I also recommend you bring extra balls.

Fastest greens in Houston

I love this course. Layout not really special compared to the other tree lined courses in and around Houston area. The greens on every hole is perfect. Bunkers are mud holes. Fairways are nothing to write home about. The greens however are.

First timer

Very fun and the greens speed was very nice. Would have broken 90 if it wasn't for the fairway bunker and the wind 15-20 mph worth pushing my drive into it on the 18th. I think I'm going to have to go back and try again real soon. Fun and well worth the hot deal fee and then some. Only problem was pace of play. Waited 10 min on each hole to play but the three of us still managed a 4.5 hr round. Started to wear on this old body after 9 holes.

Members run this course

All I can say is love the courses but if you're not a member then pack your patience if you play here. They will jump in front of you no matter if it slows the field up or not. This has happened the last two times I've played here. So my advice if you want to enjoy a round become a member or go somewhere where the members respect the people who pay to seed and aerate their course with their green fees.

Fun iron play

First do not map directions to course through golf now. Golf now has course pinned incorrectly so maps took me 7 miles away from course. Almost made me miss my tee time. Golf now needs to fix this.
The course is a great course to sharpen your iron game. I only needed 4 iron - sand wedge. As a first timer the angles off the tee boxes will put you directly hitting at a hazard. Take your range finder so you can map out your landing area off the tee and trust the angle off the tee to hit your spot. Make a mistake and hit it long or short expect to add a stroke. Was a fun course to walk. Only issue I had was the hot deal tee time only allowed 1 hr and 25 min to play the front nine before the kid squad took it over to play their scramble. I only made it through 6 before I had to vacate to back 9 so shorted me 3 holes of play. Greens were a little bumpy but better then most this time of year. All around a fun course. I will play again in the future. I will not trust golf mows mapping skills anymore. This is the second course they had pinned incorrectly.

Fun but sad

I enjoy playing here. I play and or practice here 2-3 times a week. You play this park like course that is surrounded by gutted out homes from the hurricane flood waters. The first tee not so bad but by the time you get to five it starts to hit you all these people are displaced. If it does not tug on your heart that you're playing a game on a beautiful day while there are people all around you rebuilding their lives your not human. May the lord bless everyone of them and give them strength to rebuild.

Short end stick

I arrived 30 min early to warm up on range prior to play. Checked in and warmed up and loaded my clubs. Starter said my group teed off with 11:10 group enstead of our 11:27 tee time so he was putting me with 11:45 group. The pair told me on first tee this is second time playing a round of golf. 3.5 hrs later we finished 9 holes. They spent 30 min in clubhouse, I went home. This is what happens when you get tee time through golfnow. I still do not know why they did not let me go off at 11:27 my tee time as a single. Guess I drew short stick for using a hot deal.

Fun but slow

I play here when I think I am hitting the ball well. It usually slaps me back to reality. The last time I played the course had what the starter called US Open rough. I found out what that ment on the fourth hole. The ball rolled what look like a foot off the fairway to never be found again. This made for slow play with the group in front of us backing up to three groups by hole 9 and 15 min wait on each tee after. Six hr round and I have not been back since. All the rounds prior took 4 hr and it is a fun layout if you like a challenge.

Legendary

This course is a simple straight forward test of ball placement. Opon first glance it appears to be a wide open grip it and rip it course. Then you do to find someone placed a hazard in the spot your aiming at. On this day I had a 15-20 mph north cold wind to deal with that seemed to do everything but help my ball get to the green. As a first timer that is use to a scorecard in the mid 90's this day was the worst beat down of 104 on a new course so far. I was mentally and physically drained knowing why this beautiful place is legendary. It will legendarily kick your butt if you do not pick the correct club and shot on each of the holes. Can not wait until I get to drive 1 hr each way to take the challenge on again. With my golfnow hot deal of $12 this was definitely worth the $12 in additional gas.
