Great course - bunkers not maintained

Course layout is great - very challenging. Condition of greens was very good, and fairway conditions were good. However, bunkers were in very poor condition with virtually no sand. My understanding is that these have been improved since we played - but it was disappointing to see such a great layout that was not being maintained on all facets. Also, the #2 hole was converted from par 5 to par 4, but distance markers, etc.. not changed to provide proper distances.

nice course

Friendly staff; good course layout with variable terrain; course was in good condition.
The deltas: several 'blind' tee shots; course runs through subdivision with some areas having tight proximity to houses/apartments.

Target Golf - different terrain

On the plus side - good conditions on fairways and greens considering all the rain (although traps didn't drain); and the terrain is a change of pace for Houston area.
The deltas: Lots of shots are 'target shots' with many forced layups. Course also has a few 'blind shots or elevated greens where you can't see the green surface. Need to play several rounds to understand how to manage the course. Other courses in Houston area have more appeal in my view, and for $82, other options have more value.
Not a good course for beginners

Nice course - slow play

Awesome layout; decent conditions - overall one of the nicer courses available for outside play. The 'deltas'; bring bug spray (knats are horrible); and they allow members to play fivesomes (which I understand, they pay the dues - but it results in extremely slow play for everyone- this practice is ridiculous for ANY course). Staff is very friendly. In summary one of best values in the area. I would definitely recommend.

Blackhorse South - very challenging

Blackhorse south - nice layout, overall good condition for the time of the year. Staff very friendly. The south course is very demanding - fairly tight - most holes tree-lined with narrow fairways. Very firm fairways so course plays shorter than yardage indicated. Plenty of bunkers - overall, very challenging. A bit pricey - but a overall a good course worth playing.

Great course - -- bring bug spray-

Great course layout , great setting with changes in elevation and tree lined. Condition was as expected for this time of the year- fairways a bit thin & greens recently treated so were fairly slow. Friendly staff. A couple of deltas to keep in mind:
* Gnats are horrible - bring bug spray
* Course management allows members to play fivesomes (in my view a horrible policy that affects both members and visitors). Get ready for an extremely slow round
If you can accept the above 'deltas', this is definitely a course worth trying.

Great golf course

My second time playing the Wilderness. Perhaps the best public course in the Houston area (comparable in quality to Redstone and Blackhorse). Very good layout in a great venue - no houses, in a forest (wild deer, etc..). Course itself is a good challenge - the large greens keeps the track from being overly difficult. On this round, fairways a bit thin due to time of the year & greens were slow due to recent aerating. That will correct itself in a couple of weeks. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Great value for the money. I would strongly recommend. Worth the 50 minute drive from downtown Houston.

Enjoyable round

Very friendly & helpful staff; course was in very good condition (recent revamp helpful) - greens w/ winter grass are in good shape, traps recently redone with good sand quality, fairways bare in some places due to time of year. Small but relatively deep bunkers adds challenge to the course, and makes shots visually deceptive. Course is not long, but narrow fairways on several holes and small greens make course more challenging. The one delta is course winds through subdivision - front nine is not overly appealing. Overall, worth playing.

Good course - slow play

Course - good layout; not overly difficult. However, greens were soft, which made these small greens more accessible. Friendly and helpful staff. Course conditions was fair considering it was December. Would be good value at ~ $40 - a bit pricey at $55. My only complaint is pace of play. At 7:30 in the morning you do not expect a 4-1/2 hour round. We literally waited on every shot. Marshall patrolled the course, but didn't seem to do anything to move things along. Courses (and players) need to learn that slow play is the #1 'fatal flaw' of the game of golf - NOTHING is more irritating.

Good layout

The course has a good layout with interesting holes. Winds through a subdivision (not my favorite setting). If you control your shots, the course is not overly difficult- but we did not play from the Tips. Course conditions were fair - greens recovering from recent aeration. Fairways looked 'burnt' by the heat and limited watering. Our pace of play was fine - but a 'red flag' in this area - the course allowed a 'group of 5' to go off at 7:10am (and they do not monitor pace of play) - we were fortunate that the group maintained reasonable pace, and finally let us play through on the back nine. But I could easily envision 5 hour rounds on this course. Overall, I enjoyed the course, but the $52 fee is high for the course quality.

Enjoyable round

Enjoyable round - overall a good layout- not overly difficult. Greens were in decent shape- appeared to be several days from being perfect due to recent aerating. Fairways in good shape. Finished in under 4 hrs. Overall a good facility

excellent course

A really outstanding course - phenomenal tract for a public course. Excellent variety of holes - a player will use all the sticks in his/her bag. Course was in very good shape - greens were close to perfect. The huge greens make the course somewhat forgiving if you are a decent putter. The staff was extraordinarily friendly. I was paired with 2 'regulars' who were good players and were very friendly and helpful with the local knowledge of the course. I would very strongly recommend this course to golfers of all capability.

Very good course

Blackhorse North - excellent, challenging layout. Course condition was very good. Pace of play was a bit slow - Marshall spoke to the laggard group on ~ hole 14 and things sped up considerably - but there should have been more monitoring on pace of play earlier. However, we did complete the round in ~ 4 hrs 20 minutes on a Sunday morning, so not horrible. Overall, one of the best courses in the Houston area that is open to the public. Although a bit pricey, I would strongly recommend this course.
