Nice, but showing its age

This is a nice course with 4 or 5 holes right on the marsh with long views out across the wetlands. It is a classic low country course: tight from tee to green with small greens. You don't need to be long, but you must be straight. If you struggled with the driver like I did, it will be a long day.

Also, the bermuda grass on the greens seems like an older strain that's very coarse. There are better strains that roll smoother and are less grainy. For the price ($100 on GolfNow), I expected better.

I liked Amelia River and The Golf Club of Amelia Island better.

Great greens, great value

I played 18 in the morning and liked it so much that I played another 18 that afternoon. Course was in great shape, but the greens in particular were fantastic. Fast, smooth and true. I talked to a greenskeeper who said they cut and roll them every day and it showed.

About half the holes have houses on them, but the other half feel like you are in the wilderness, surrounded by trees and nature. The holes that do have houses on them, the houses do not come into play - you have to be really wild off the tee. Also, mercifully, some areas that would normally be marked OB at other courses are marked as a lateral hazard making it possible to drop as opposed to re-teeing.

The course has a lot of beautiful elevation change to go with the trees.

The fairways are wide with plenty of space on either side before getting into the junk. Likewise there is a lot of space around every green complex. There are only 12 bunkers, but the lack of bunkers didn’t take away from the difficulty or beauty of the course. Keeping bunkers to a strategic minimum speeds up play and keeps costs down. A lot of courses should take their cues from Bartram Trails in this regard.

Lastly, the greens are where it’s at on this golf course. If they were slow or flat, it wouldn’t be as good a course - still fun, but not what it is.

I played it the next day with my 8 year old - they have a set of junior tees which are perfect for young golfers.

bottom line - can’t wait to play it again.
