Good Value, Fun Course

I've played Hendrick's many times. My game doesn't warrant paying more than $50 for a round of golf, so Hendrick's is a great bargain for me. It's sufficiently challenging for all but the single-digit handicapper, but not so difficult that I can't break 90 on a good day. You can usually finish the round in 4 hours or less, so good pace for a municipal course.

Decent course for the money but not following the rules

Greens are in terrible shape due to recent aerating, which they didn't bother disclose. Course gets a bit backed up because they're booking tee times every 10 minutes (not 16 or more according to the NJ state order) and blame it on GolfNow, although other courses in the area seem to be able to schedule proper tee time intervals. Also, they'll let groups of 3 and 4 go out, which is another violation of the state order limiting groups to 2somes. It's behavior like this that will cause golf courses to get closed again.

The course wrote back stating that aerating is a normal part of maintenance. However, my complaint wasn't that the greens were aerated; it was that they didn't disclose that fact prior to booking. Many golf courses post their aerating schedule on their website; Meadows does not and they aren't answering the phones, so you cannot ask. Separately, they claim that they allow 4some if they're in the same household. Well, they tried to add a 3rd person to my tee time and I witnessed a group of 4 buddies playing together using 2 carts. Could they have all been roommates? Possibly, but given that they tried to add a 3rd to my tee time, I'm skeptical that they make any attempt to verify whether any group exceeding 2 are part of the same household. Very disingenuous response in my humble opinion.

Hello, u000007283679. We appreciate you taking the time to review the course. We work hard to maintain the course for everyone's benefit, which means aerifying the greens as part of our regular maintenance schedule and keeping them in pristine condition. We are keeping up to date on the always changing NJ State Orders during this time. We are allowing foursomes if they are in the same household. We appreciate the review and feedback. Please reach out to the pro shop if you have any questions or concerns. We hope to see you again soon for another round at Meadows Golf Course.

The Importance of Rangers

There are a lot of things to like about this course. It is well maintained, the staff is very friendly, nice layout, etc. However, the one missing element are rangers. On the day I played, I was behind a group of 3 guys that played slow and with poor etiquette. Neither did they repair their ball marks on the green nor rake the sand traps after use. However, this wasn't the most egregious of their behavior. On several occasions, as I was waiting for them in the fairway or on the tee box, one of their group would take practice swings in the fairway AFTER he hit a bad shot and he would sometimes re-hit his putt AFTER his group had putted out. I was finally able to play through them on 16 while they took way too long to look for one guy's ball in the tall fescue. Had there been rangers roaming the course making sure people kept pace, I suspect this behavior would have been corrected. Otherwise, it was a perfectly pleasant round of golf.

Nice Course; Very Good Value

Played on a weekday. Pace was pretty good, but I can see how it could get backed up on a weekend. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I didn't rate off-course amenities because I didn't experience them. There was a cart girl and a driving range, so that's a big plus for a municipal course. I will definitely play again.

A Good Day Spoiled

The course itself was in pretty good shape considering we have a sizable storm come through the area less than 48 hours ago. I called the night before and booked the 8:40am tee time, knowing there wasn't another bookings until 9am (they even asked me if I wanted to be paired and I said no). Warmed up and was heading to the 1st tee when they stopped me to tell me they were putting another golfer with me. It's a course's prerogative to pair singles, but this guy hadn't even pulled his clubs out of his car yet! Then, I had to change golf carts because he needed to charge his phone. In addition, they added another twosome, so instead of playing alone, I played in a foursome. After 4 hours, we had only completed 15 holes (since I was expecting to play alone, I would have finished in less than 3.5 hours). The 16th tee is near the clubhouse, so I said good-bye and headed to my car. Don't get me wrong; the other 3 guys were perfectly nice guys and the conversation was pleasant. However, since there was an open tee time at 8:50am, I'm befuddled as to why they would stop me from heading out and add 3 guys when they could have easily had the 3 of them tee off at 8:50 and let me go out at 8:40 (which would have given the guy added to my cart time to get his clubs out of his car and warm up a bit). Given the slow pace of our play and the fact that we didn't see the group behind us until we teed off on 14, I'm fairly certain the 8:50 tee time remained open. Seems to me like there is some poor decision-making in the clubhouse.
