Very. Tough. Greens.

Pace of play: Bad. Didn’t free up until the back nine. Sandwich golf with people in our hip pocket from behind and waiting for the people in front. Finished in 4 and a half, but could have been a lot better

Fairways: Good shape. Not lush tropic green in the pictures but good

Sand Traps. Like every other course in Arizona, they were horrible. More like Caliche traps.

Par fours were in the 315 to 375 range. Not a long course.

The Greens: very very tough. Very fast and sloping. If you have a down hill putt and miss, you will roll fifteen feet past and that is with the lightest possible touch. Very challenging for ones short game.

I’d play it again.

Its Not Scottsdale

If I were local, I'd probably play here - for the money, it's ok. Green fee was 29 plus tax and GolfNow's bit. But - It is a bit of a drive and their claim of "The Duke has the feel of a Scottsdale golf club without Scottsdale green fees." is a bit much. It is an average course. Fairways were a bit cooked up, greens were firm but average. Staff is polite / nice. But - it's nothing I'd make the trip out to play again. If you are expecting The Raven or Legacy, it's not. More on par w/ a Dobson Ranch or other muni course.

Every Hole has a catch

Pretty tough course. Either a given hole was really long and difficult to reach in two or you had to be Dead Eye Richard to hit the green because of bunker placement. One par four was only 300 yards...but was literally had ten bunkers on the approach with no margin for a bad shot. Freeways were beautiful, layout was great and greens were firm and fast. Normally, this course costs north of 80; I managed to sneak on for 45. I'd play this again in a heartbeat

Bring your A game

This course is hard. You need to hit the fairway and then you need to hit a great second to hit greens that are either really small landing strips, or really big but with a hill / valley to putt through. The whole time you are trying to stay out of the sand or away from fairway hills that line some of the fairways. Also you Need to not hit the occasional cactus.

But it’s a great course, really challenging and fun to play. My only gripe is the great unwashed public can only make a tee time one week in advance.

Great. Course.

Biased

I managed to break 100 so I am pretty biased. The only thing I did not like about legacy were the sand traps. They are a pretty prominent hazard; placed strategically around every green and also in the fairways right around the 200 yard mark where ones drive tends to land. And they were seriously hard dirt. Not sand. Hard pan concrete

Otherwise it was a great course. Well maintained fairways and greens, great staff and a great day. I’d cone here again without reservation

Great course

Tees off at 1:44. We were never rushed by the guys in back of us and never crowded the guys in front. Fairways were well taken care of, sand traps had pretty fluffy sand and greens were fast and pretty hard - not a lot of ball strike marks.

Layout was challenging - you have to hit the fairway or you are in desert scrub. Greens defended by bunkers so your approach matters. Had a great time and I’d play here again in a heart beat

Good value for the money

Painted Mountain isn’t a bad course. You won’t confuse it with Pebble Beach, but it isn’t Hack West either. Fairways were narrow in place and you have to hit the gap or you are in desert or OB. Greens had some spots where other players didn’t fix their meteor strike. But - the pace of play was pretty good and all in all made for a good day of golf. No complaints.

Ok

For forty bucks in high season in Arizona, it is what it is. It’s just an Ok course. If you want a “ Las Sendas” or Red Mountain ranch, you'll pay the premium.

If you want an inexpensive round on a decent course, Dobson answers the mail.

Addendum to earlier review

Already mentioned the difficulty, challenging layout with every hole having some kind of catch to it and that the raven is pretty much a great very taking place to play and I highly recommend it. What I forgot to say before was that the raven also has the best beer cart girls.

Not bad

Played April 26 at 2:06. Fairways were in decent shape, but pretty hard. If you get off the fairway, it’s pretty scrubby. Greens were decent; a lot of people didn’t repair ball marks. I caught a Hot Deal so for the 20 bucks, 18 holes and a cart, it was a decent day of golf. I’d rank it similar to Dobson Ranch.

Would have been nice if the marshal enforced slow play

Course wasn’t bad, like the layout and the green fee was reasonable. What absolutely ruined it were the completely oblivious idiots in front of us who took fifty shots each hole. Each tee shot was a ten minute wait for these clowns to get out of the fairway. Complained about the slow play to the marshal.

Nada
