Cranston Country Club
Played On 08/30/2020Decent Course but could use some maintenance
Overall the course was decent.. Maybe a hair over priced for the quality, but I had fun and the pace of play was decent for a Sunday. The fairway and some of the greens really need some repair - dead spots galore which affected putts. However, the course was on the soft side which was pleasant. I would play again, but probably not at the full price tee times,
Hillside Country Club
Played On 06/18/2016Under maintained Municipal course
The clubhouse and staff were friendly and overall the place looks great driving in. The course layout is mostly woods with fairly straight holes. The greens were average, and sand bunkers were a mix of a decent layer of sand and various rocks. While there was a distinguishing line between the fairway and rough, the rough had better ground to play off of, as the course was covered with dead grass, torn up ground, and was overall poorly maintained. The amount of divots / poor ground conditions make this course almost unplayable, even for experienced ball strikers, with many "fairways" being at least 50% dirt. Tee boxes hadn't been cut in a while and were anything but level. For the price I paid, there are many options in the eastern RI / southcoast MA with 2-3x the course conditions, as overall this is a under maintained municipal course.
Firefly Golf Course
Played On 06/29/2014Good value; don't expect perfection
The course is decent and great for a quick round, either solo or a duo. The holes are generally challenging though the use of obstacles, terrain slope, and some tight fairways. As most of the holes are par 3, you can complete a solo round in under 2 hours walking. The course seems to use less water, so you get a sense of European style rough in some areas. I recommend this course if you want to get in a quick round or are sick of the driving range.
With that said, I only recommend this course for regular 18 hole play if you can get a good deal on the price. There are better courses in the area that charge in the same full price range and have much better conditions. For example: I only saw two signs indicated hole number, so you have to use a hand drawn map to find your way around; about 1/3 of the bunkers had trash/beer cans/glass in them; some tee boxes were missing the white/red/blue markers and were generally not well maintained.
My biggest issue is the location - A par 4 has you hitting next to a rather high speed road with a decent amount of traffic on the right within 10 paces; this can be intimating for most average right hand golfers who may slice and thus either hook or take a terrible swing to prevent vehicle damage. A par 3 has you hitting over a parking lot with cars... Two par 3s have you hitting next to many houses/back yards - 1 stay ball and your hitting their windows. Finally, two holes have a car sales lot along side or near the green. Long story short, 1/3 of the holes can be intimidating for a double digit handicapper and potentially cause them to play worse.
