B at Seneca Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2017Seneca A & B are in the midst of change
The 36 holes at the Cleveland Metroparks owned Seneca Golf Course are undergoing transformation. Originally the two 18s were referred to as A and B. Now they are taking on names of watersheds in the area, Furnace Run and Chippewa are two of the names designated thusfar. Course architects and grounds crews have completed A's front nine, and are soon to open the front nine of B. The back nines of both courses are awaiting change. A's back nine will remain but B's back nine will be converted to driving range, and possibly naturescape or footgolf area. An irrigation system has been installed on the course which should certainly improve course conditions. Geoff Koller, Golf Professional and Clubhouse Manager for Seneca, graciously took us on a tour of the renovations. And when it came to golf, we made a point of seeing as much of Course A as possible noting the vast contrasts and improvements from one nine to the next. The day we played there was an outing which slowed play.
Also, portions of the course were closed for the renovations.
South at Thunderbird Hills Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2017Great course to try near Cedar Point
A steady stream of carts lined up at the #1 tee box as they waited their turn to move along this beautiful course for an early morning round of golf. The pace of play was comfortable and we enjoyed the challenges of each fairway. The back nine was harder than the front. Lunch at the clubhouse was delicious, and the outdoor patio a perfect place to relax and refresh before heading home. And like most of the courses I've played thusfar, this is definitely worth another visit.
Manakiki Golf Course
Played On 08/07/2017What's not to love about Manakiki
The sweeping elevation changes on this former country club course are a challenge for my game but I'd absolutely play it again. It's beautifully maintained by the Cleveland Metroparks system.
Sand Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2017Beautiful
I chose this course for its ranking as the first in Ohio to receive the Audubon International Signature Wildlife Sanctuary status. My sons were in on the game for the challenge of playing one of Ohio's best. Our terrific forecaddie was adept at interlacing course history for me with shot strategy tips for them during the round. Opened in 1998, Sandridge is Fazio's first Ohio course and it's spectacular. The 370-acre property includes five wetlands, lovely panoramic views, and challenging but fair golf. What a wonderful way to spend a day!
River/Maple at Fowler's Mill Golf Course
Played On 06/17/2017Fowler Sustains Golfers and the Environment
Some years ago I walked this popular and busy course on a rainy, windy day during my son's golf tournament . My visit there in June was vastly different weather wise as the air was still, the sun bright, and the humidity high. But the course was just as popular as the last time I had seen Fowler. This beautiful and challenging course was a delight in spite of the pace and the heat. For those who appreciate such things, the course is ranked for being environmentally friendly and sustainable. Promoting the growth of native plants along the course to reduce the amount of turfgrass maintenance and watering needs is one of the characteristic features of sustainable courses such as Fowler's Mill. Kudos to the course for efforts to practice better environmental stewardship for the welfare of the employees, golfers, and wildlife.
