Salt Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/15/2016Great Value, Semi-Links Style Canyon Course
I really enjoyed this course - one of two in the greater San Diego area that could be loosely tagged as having links-like qualities. Fast, challenging greens, open design, elevation changes, some blind tee shots, good views, and approachable, fun to play, all in a moderate to value price point.
The only downsides I'd say is 1) that most of the holes are relatively straight (I don't recall any major dog legs or many considerable turns) and 2) slow play was awful on President's Day. While the slow play was expected (5.5 hours for 18 holes), it was the lack of visible presence the employees of the course took to improve slow play that detracted from the experience.
Oh by the way, good hot dogs and sandwiches at the turn, too.
Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort - Zaharias Course
Played On 01/03/2016Fun, Fair Challenge of a Course
Ran out here for the first 18 of the new year while the family did another day in Anaheim, and I'm very glad I went. Friendly staff, surprisingly good food from the snack bar for how quick the orders are ready. Ended up getting paired up with two locals who were quite welcoming.
The Ike course was in great shape with nearly every hole delightfully catching the eye. I'm told this is the more open of the two 18s at the resort, and I would agree that course _plays_ open despite the impressive tree lines - for the most one has opportunity to recover from misplays rather than penalizing every miss. The greens were quite fast and in pretty good shape as well.
I admit, the tee box for the other course ("Babe") also looked quite engaging - I look forward to going back to try the other course. I would highly recommend the Ike course for a single golfer or group.
North at Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2015Fun Playing Experience at Torrey "Lite"
I've played here a few times now; consistently a fun course to play. The first seven holes are rather similar to the South course, hugging the cliffs and showcasing great coastal views. The remaining 11 holes are relatively straight-forward straight forward by comparison as they work away from the water.
Sometimes the course can slow up a bit during twilight, particularly around the front nine par 3's. That said, if you're looking for a less expensive option to the South course (and have already played it), consider the North course.
Eighteen Hole at Balboa Park Municipal Golf Club
Played On 06/14/2015Best Muni in San Diego Not Named Torrey Pines
Not a particularly long course, but the design is quite enticing and fun to play. Only a few holes seem to mirror each other; most keep the challenges and elevations varied.
Course in good shape - fairways are generally good to hit off of, rough is playable, greens are at a moderate to slower speed. Each time I've played here the pace of play has been pretty good, waits are infrequent. Good range and practice green.
Eighteen Hole at Balboa Park Municipal Golf Club
Played On 06/06/2015Great Value and Place to Work your Game
I've played here a few times - at its best, this is a very quick course where I've had opportunity to practice and work my game (and most clubs in the bag) for a very reasonable price (especially compared to Mission Bay GC not far away). At its worst, this fairly sizeable 9 hole course can move very slow with every foursome that hasn't played golf in years.
Pretty straight ahead design that maximizes on available space. Recommended during off-peak times.
Thank you so much for leaving your review and feedback on Salt Creek GC, we appreciate your honest feedback. So glad you got a round in on President's Day weekend, it was a busy one! We regret to hear the pace of play was less than ideal, we urge you to come back again on a regular weekend, so happy to hear you loved the food at the turn and you enjoyed the course!
