Red Wing Lake Golf Course
Played On 09/06/2014Nice layout, average condition
This course has a fun layout and a variety of challenges, my main issue simply condition. I was there on a Saturday and the fairways had a fairly large amount of the tall stalks from crabgrass sticking up on most fairways. They has also recently aerated and sanded the greens. I had heard going in that their greens had always been a weak spot, but some reviews on the site said they were good now. They probably would have been fine without the thousands of tiny holes and sand, but who could tell.
Minor thing, but no beverage cart on a hot Saturday afternoon was disappointing.
Chesapeake Golf Club
Played On 08/29/2014Great course. Great value
I love playing Chesapeake. If you don't mind playing around houses you'll love this course. Almost every hole has some kind of risk reward decision to make. For example, the 4th hole has a 150 yard layup to water or a 230 water carry off the tee. Two holes later a demanding tee shot to set up a long water carry on a par 5.
This course used to be in fairly poor repair but in the past few years it has been great. The greens were perfect. The rough hang overly punishing and the fairways are a little firm but the grass is consistent.
The Lamberts Point Golf Course
Played On 08/28/2014Challending course with interesting layout
This is a fun course with some challenging landing areas. You have to be precise with not many opportunities for driver.
Cahoon Plantation Golf Club
Played On 08/25/2014Excellent Course
I love playing at Cahoon. It is a very tricky course that makes you make plenty of risk-reward decisions. Their deep bermuda rough makes you pay for errant shots and the greens are top notch.
This outing was tempered a bit by what seemed like a high school golf team who were out ahead of us and really tore up the tee boxes. I've never seen deeper gouges out of a box. It's a shame because they are normally immaculate. Regardless, it's still a 5 star experience in my book.
Stumpy Lake Golf Course
Played On 08/14/2014Solid Course, Nicely Maintained
Stumpy has always been a fairly straightforward course to play, but in years past the quality of the fairways and greens were lacking. They have finally rectified that and it is an enjoyable place to play. The holes don't have you make many strategy decisions so it is more of a relaxing atmosphere then a grind most days.
Our pace of play yesterday morning was pretty poor, but I can't blame that directly on the course.
Their food and drink prices are some of the best I've seen. I had a hot dog and a beer at the 19th hole for only 5.75!
Honey Bee Golf Club
Played On 08/04/2014Solid Course, but doesn't handle rain well
I always enjoy playing at Honey Bee. The staff is friendly and they have a very good practice area with a nice chipping area and grass driving range. The food facilities seem largely deserted most of the time that I'm there (granted, not during peak hours usually). My only negative with the course itself is how poorly it drains. A heavy rain will leave it wet for several days.
Get there on a dry day though and you'll be in great shape.
Cypress Point Country Club
Played On 07/30/2014One of the Best in Hampton Roads
I rarely get out to Cypress Point because unless you find a deal on golfnow the rates are a little steep. That said, if you can make it out here you definitely should. The fairways and greens were in excellent shape and this course is extremely playable. The layout is tricky without a ton of trouble which makes for a fun round. The holes on the back nine are some of the most interesting in hampton roads with elevation changes, risk/reward driving holes and some beautiful par 3s.
My only slight issue was several tee boxes had the grass gone from the blues which combined the blues and whites on a few holes. I'm sure that is just some temporary maintenance and didn't result in any real issues.
Suffolk Golf Course
Played On 07/19/2014Disappointing
After reading the reviews for this course I had relatively high hopes for this facility. It was a let down to say the least.
The layout was interesting and the holes were laid out well but the conditions of the greens and fairways were very poor. Apparently they are doing new Bermuda on the greens which requires frequent aeration but these greens were full of weeds and crab grass as well as being stripped and scorched in many places. On of the greens on a par three was probably 70% sand. Made putting a nightmare.
The fairways were almost anything but fair. Not only were they poorly mowed (very high) but their were a half a dozen different kinds of grass and weeds in any square yard. The tee boxes were equally inconsistent.
We had a golf now deal for $30 each which still seems about $10 high for the condition of the course. I don't plan on coming back.
