Deer Run Championship at Newport News Golf Club

This course is in great shape. Level of play is average with wide fairways and fairly flat greens. Have played here several times but never seen it crowed, so the pace of play is enjoyable. Well worth the stop over if you are passing through the area. Convenient to Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF) airport, Busch Gardens theme park and Colonial Williamsburg.
The Pines Golf Course at Fort Eustis - Virginia Pines/Ponderosa Pines

This course is a great place for the beginner to average player. The fairways are very generous, straight away, and with few hazards. The greens are mostly flat. Low frustration factor. Very enjoyable! Non-locals note: this course is located on a U.S. Military installation so be sure to arrive early since there can be delays going through the security checkpoint.

Numerous hills, bunkers and elevated greens, and narrow fairways.If walking it could become aerobic. Need to visit after a dry spell since the place becomes pretty soggy after periods of precipitation.All that aside, if you're looking for a challenge this is the place to go.
