Preserve Golf Course
Played On 02/19/2015great mountain views
This course winds around the foothills canyons of the Catalina mountains with picturesque views from most holes. It seemed like more holes were downhill. You need to be careful in the downhill roll into hazards and ravines. There is no GPS provided so a course booklet for $ 2 is a good investment. The dormant grass does not stop balls from rolling. The only drawback to this round was 5 hours. They had people starting every 7 minutes. And the ranger could do little to speed it up. They have 5 set of tee boxes. And they have a chart on the card suggesting tee box based on your driving distance with several combo tee sets. I found this very helpful in choosing my poison.
Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
Played On 04/02/2014Fun even in bad weather
It rained, it blew, it got cold, but we enjoyed ourselves anyway. The starter allowed us to start at 10 so that we could play faster, considering the weather conditions. We finally caugyt up to a foursome at hole 16. We made the turn in 1 1/2 hours. There weren't many people playing because of the weather. The course is in great shape and plenty of challenges on every hole. We didn't take a lot of time to study our shots, because we just kept moving. The greens were plenty fast, and the wind definitely moved our putts. This is a great complex with 3 challenging courses. It is out of town, so it is cooler, and in this case colder. Great experience that you should not pass up.
Mountain Falls Golf Course
Played On 03/31/2014great gem
I enjoyed the easy drive up from Vegas. Jack Nicklaus designed the front 9, so it has plenty of sand to trap your errant shots. The greens are large, tiered, fast, and deceptively deceiving.
The back 9 has large bodies of water bordering several holes, and the trees are much larger and mature. Be sure to check with the GPS. I could not see the 1st hole that had water, because it was hidden from view... Over the hill I drove, and looking for my ball saw the water... ooops. This was a fun course, and just as nice as any in Vegas, but without the high price tag. Got it on a Hot Deal for $39... I had dinner at the Grill, and was back in town before dark, ready to party.
Apache Stronghold Golf Course
Played On 03/18/2014Well worth the drive from the valley
This course is not in pristine shape, but the views are pristine. The sandtraps have been taken care since last year. New sand, and no weeds... better sand than many courses in the valley. This course does not get much play, and I always play 36 holes because I can... I started out at 8:45 and finished the first 18 before noon. Had a sandwich, most excellent in the restaurant, and then went out again. Finished before 4 and was back home by 5:30 in the valley. Oh, hot deal for $25 and replay for $30. The price of golf in the valley is NUTS, so I love being able to play 36 for $55.... So what if the course is brown in places... It didn't affect my game....yes more water on the fairways would be good... but the grass is actually greening up and coming out of dormancy. There play and stay package is nice if you want to play 36 2 days in a row, which I have done... I never tire of this course, because of the challenge and the great views. Every hole is different. You often say, I'd like to play that hole over again, and play it differently.
Agave Highlands
Played On 10/21/2013Standard course in an out of the way place
I enjoyed playing this course, but had a great Hot deal price... I wouldn't play this course for the going rate. It had a few holes that were challenging, with elevation gains up and down... The course is in the process of going dormant, with overseeding, so some of the rough, was truly rough. The greens were of good size and did present some challenges in speed and break. It was a fast round, which I appreciated. The price is definitely cheaper than the price of courses in Sedona, but is also not of the same caliber of maintanance or scenic views... If you want a good basic challenge on the cheap this course will fill the bill.
Druids Glen
Played On 9/25/2013dynamite course with lots of hazards and fun
This is a good solid course with lots of trouble if your shots are wayward.... 3 out of the 4 par 3's require clearing water which makes it a little more exciting....the course is currently very wet in places due to all the rain we have had the past week. The greens were sanded this past week, which effected some putts, but all and all it was a good round. Bring plenty of balls if you can't keep your ball in the fairway or out of the water....
The Home Course
Played On 8/06/2013outstanding links style course
took advantage of a hot deal and was pleased with it all... the course is starting to brown in spots due to lack of rainfall...the fairways played hard and fast.... but the greens were in good shape.. large with plenty of undulations. they were smooth and fast, and ran true..and approach shots ran, ran, and ran some more..... there were stunning views of Mt Rainier from most of the holes, and on the front nine you had views of Puget Sound also....Bring your A game and you will have a good time... They do have a beverage cart now, and a stand that sells some nutrition. a clubhouse in on the drawing boards, and that will be a great addition when it happens
Apple Tree Golf Course
Played On 06/11/2013Water everywhere
I have heard and read about this course for many years and finally played it... I am sorry it took me so long to make the trip over here to play it. The course is very interesting as it not only winds through the apple orchards, but has elevation gains and losses. The carts do not have GPS which would be very helpful on many of the holes.... so bring whatever gadget you have that will tell you the yardage. There are plenty of bunkers in landing areas and surrounding the greens. The greens are fairly large, with plenty of undulation and tiers. There was water on many of the holes... down the sides, in front of the greens, etc. The hazards were not always visible from the tee or the fairway. The wind was blowing 10-20 MPH and made some of the holes very long. I believe that wind is a common issue here in Eastern Washington. The course was in good condition, and the staff there was very friendly and helpful. The food is also excellent at the restaurant, and is popular with the local residents... Great views of the 9th, 17th, and 18th holes. I had a 2PM cheap rate, and flew around the course in 3 hours. and was back at home by 7:30 on the west side....
Highlander Golf Club
Played On 5/24/2013interesting changes to the course
Over the years they have limited the tall grasses to speed up play... Now they have significantly changed the back nine due to a new housing project. They have shortened the course, making it more target golf, with water hazards. The last 2 holes have been re-platted over the ravines.... Not long, but you better hit it straight. They have created several new greens and they are in good shape with plenty of undulation and pull to the river. There is plenty of elevation on the back nine as it goes up and down the hillsides...They have placed many new and mature trees between the fairways which helps protect the golfers from errant shots. They still have more changes on the drawing board for more water features.
Auburn Golf Course
Played On 5/10/2013mature muni course
This course gets lots of traffic due to pricing. The course has mature tree lined fairways, but space between the trees to play your ball back into the correct fairway. The greens are of average size with some undulation... The front nine is very pedestrian until hole 7... where water comes into play... After hole 10 the course climbs up the hillside, where you find elevation changes, and narrower fairways... for the walkers this is where they have to stop to catch their breath. The last three holes drop back down off the hillside, and the last 3 holes have water to greet your errant shots.. This is a good basic course for the average golfer. It will present enough challenges to keep you going. Sand traps come into play only on a small number of holes and they are in good condition.
Eaglemont Golf Club
Played On 5/07/2013VERY challenging course
This is one challenging course.... stunning views of Mt Baker from many holes... This course is forested, with many holes going severely downhill, and uphill, with doglegs...Course knowledge is essential. Many holes were blind because of doglegs or elevation changes....I had very few level lies because of the elevation changes. If you hit the ball off the fairway you were penalized with tough rough, and I lost at least 2 balls, even though I saw where it went, into the rough. Even the short pars 4 were difficult because of the rough... This course demands shots to landing areas where there are decent lies. The par 3's were challenging as well...I enjoyed playing the course very much, but I did not play well at all due to the difficulty of the course. If you are a decent golfer, this course will challenge your abilities... A range finder is a must to know the distances to the landing areas and the hazards. The greens were large and undulating, and in good shape...
Kokopelli Golf Course
Played On 2/23/2013Water on the 1st 3 holes
You better be warmed up when you start off on this course... Anybody with a hooking problem better have plenty of balls with them.... the fairway runs to the water on 1 and 2...which can be intimidating... The couple I played with, had run out of balls before the 18th hole the previous 2 times they played this course.... which has water on it. This course provides plenty of variety of doglegs, water, and undulating greens.... This time I found quite a bit of winter damage on the bermuda areas bordering the fairways... leaving bare ground lies. The fairways and greens were in good condition, but off the fairways were some rough patches.. This course gets a lot of play, so plays slower than many courses in the valley. All of the par threes are well bunkered and difficult to get to...
Vistal Golf Club
Played On 2/11/2013This isn't your typical Phoenix golf course......
I call this a value laden course.... they keep the prices down by not overseeding in the winter. I have always enjoyed playing here because of the challenges it poses... There are no houses on the course... They are in the process of taking out several large bunkers that were in landing spots in the fairways... This will speed up play, but also make the course easier. They have painted the dormant fairways green, to give you the effect of playing on green grass. It didn't bother me... they do overseed the tee boxes and greens. The course sits up against the base of South Mountain, so you have some elevation changes up and down, and good views to the north, the city and mounain ranges of Scottsdale. Fairly close to the airport, so it is good for people to get a round in after they get here or on the day they are leaving.. our playing partners were catching an early evening flight and had time for a beer after we were done.
San Tan Highlands
Played On 2/10/2013good course with scenic challenges on the back 9
This course has matured into a nice course... the front nine is pretty straight forward with pins accessible. small doglegs, some rolling fairways... The back nine is totally different, as it winds its way around a mountain... significant elevation gains, multi-tiered greens, blind shot doglegs...stunning views...shot placement is at a premium... with carrys over desert.
Sedona Golf Resort
Played On 2/2/2013Fun, beautiful setting, challenging
This course presents many challenges, with well placed sand traps, elevation gains, and losses. It has very few homes or buildings next to the fairways.... You have dramatic views from most holes which can be distracting if you are not careful. The course was plenty busy, but was in excellent shape... don't be fooled by the 1st hole.... it is a fairly short, benign hole, so you might get the wrong idea on how easy the course will play... you go up and over the hill and drop down into another valley where the holes wind back and forth, up and down, etc... A fun time was had by all, and our group managed to lose a few balls along the way
The Club at Seven Canyons
Played On 1/29/2013stunning views, very challenging, takes thoughtfulness
This course has some winter damage, but still plays very well. The greens were in decent shape, and very challenging. They are large with plenty of contour.. One of the treats of this course are the elevation gains and losses. None of the fairways are flat or straight. Thought must be given on where to place your shots. There are several holes that have barrancas crossing the fairway, and you must decide to lay up or go for it. There is not adequate signage for distances to the green. Very few sprinkler heads had markings, and the 200, 150 100 markers were hard to find. Judging the distance was not easy because of the elevation changes... Also there were several holes that were blind to the green.. the greens having a high front or a false front. Overall I would still highly recommend this course because of the challenges it presented,.
Las Sendas Golf Club
Played On 1/24/2013A real golf challenge,... not for the timid or basic golfer
This is a very challenging course winding its way around a desert landscaped high end neighborhood.... Elevation changes up and down, with many uphill fairways into elevated greens... The greens are probably the most challenging part of the course, and their reputation is well deserved. 3' putts with several inches of break, and the stimpmeter runs pretty fast here. The pull of the valley plays havoc on reading correctly the breaks in the greens. Rock outcroppings make for great scenery and ball beaters... Course knowledge is important in laying up to the best landing areas. The greens are protected by plenty of sand, and they were pretty hard packed at this time. Go with a good attitude and know that most likely the course will win the battle.
Bear Creek Golf Complex - Bear Course
Played On 1/9/2013fun little muni course
This is a decent municipal course, with good size greens with undulations, and plenty of sand traps protecting them. There are rolling fairways, plenty of doglegs, and a couple of blind shots....The pace of play is decent, and this course gets plenty of play because of reasonable prices. This course allows walking, and a lot of players take advantage of this... the greens are close to the next tee box, so there is no hold up of play by the walkers.... This course is not particularly long and is a good course for average golfers.
Golf Club At Terra Lago - North Course
Played On 12/24/2012great variety, and elevation changes for desert course
This course starts out relatively easy, short par 4.... uphill...easily reachable with a short iron... the 2nd hole is similar.... then you turn a corner, and a long downhill par 5... there are plenty of bunkers placed right in the way for the errant shot. the greens are large with plenty of contours to send your ball away from the hole... the greens were not particularly fast but they were in good shape. Great views all around. uphill par 3 then a steep downhill par 3... then you get to the back nine.... narrower with more hazards to avoid..,. the stretch 13, 14 and 15 send you around and over water... and the last hole 18 has water all the way done its left side. A fun course which I always enjoy playing.
Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club - Lost Gold Course
Played On 12/16/2012Stunning views from every hole
This course is set in a beautiful Sonoran desert with great views. The staff was very helpful and easy to deal with. The course was in excellent shape even though it had rained the past 2 days. The started suggested playing one tee box back if I wanted to stay out of the bunkers. Good advice. The fairways narrowed down at the landing areas. The greens were the fastest I have ever played on and rolled true. It is a private course open to the public on a limited basis.... It does not get heavy play, therefore a quicker round on fairways that are not filled with divots. I felt like a member in the way I was treated. Beautiful practice area, clubhouse, and facilities.... The LPGA played here for 5 years and loved it, and I can see why.
