Windswept Dunes Golf Course
Played On 12/07/2019Great golf, but poor value
Golf course was in excellent condition. A fun track to play as you don’t really have to worry about poor drives too much as the fairways are so wide. Although the fairways are wide, check a GPS map, cause there are many fairway bunkers you can find very easily if you don’t look and see what’s out on front of your first. There are lots of hidden bunkers and other hazards.
Although, the actual golf was great, there were several things that turned me off. The lack of GolfNow Hotdeals or even just a presence on GolfNow was strange. You’re pretty much stuck paying rack rate and no one likes that. That is around $85 for non-locals which is almost as high as Regatta Bay and Kelly Plantation that are just as beautiful and a much higher end experience.
Also, small quirks like no tees in the carts, old carts, and no free range balls ($7 for the tiniest bucket ever) all contributed to an off-putting experience. After adding the cost of balls, you’re pretty neat the cost of the bigger courses in Destin.
Also, I’m not a huge fan of the lightning fast ginormous greens. Kind of gimmicky in my opinion and sometimes even impossible to make a one-putt depending on Lin location. I’d recommended Rocky Bayou Country Club in Niceville for a more economical experience with great conditions.
It was fun for the day, but I probably won’t go back. Too many other options, especially when you can catch a HotDeal.
Gulf Shores Golf Club
Played On 11/24/2019Great Course, but a few weak areas.
Course was phenomenal! Greens were some of the best I’ve seen all year and I’ve played many courses in Destin and St. Augustine. Layout was challenging, but not particularly difficult. They’ll give you a free yardage book in the pro shop that includes tips for each hole. Nice touch!
The carts are extremely old. Rattled a lot and has none of the features like charging ports or GPS. For the price, I’d at least expect a newer cart even without all the extra bells and whistles.
Driving range was on mats only. Not too much to complain about, but these weren’t real mats....just a piece of thin artificial turf over concrete. That makes it extremely hard to get any decent contact and made me worry about injury.
Would definitely play here again and again, but those two things could be improved. You can’t go wrong with the quality of golf...which is what really matters.
