Wexham Park Golf Centre - Blue Course
Played On 10/15/2020Temp layout a letdown
First off: big disclaimer. I know they are undertaking some major rebuilding work so several of the full length holes have been taken out of play and 18 holes have been concocted from the remaining untouched holes. They have actually done quite a good job in terms of the design of the layout, but as a result there are a few temporary "greens" which are just unputtable. The pace of the other greens is also very variable which can make for a very frustrating experience. Overall the layout is now quite short, but can still provide an interesting challenge if you want to plot your way round with your middle irons. Otherwise many of the par 4s can be driven or reached with a drive and a wedge.
All in all, I think the temp layout is ok, but the real sting is that they're still charging full whack to get round there. I got a hot deal for £15 which was good value but I wouldn't want to be spending £25+ for these 18 holes, not unless they sort the greens situation out. The new layout is going to be great from a look at the plans, so perhaps best to hang on until they've finished if you want a full-round experience. Otherwise for a quick practice and a walk it's ok.
Staff very friendly in the pro shop which has already had the renovation treatment.
Stevenage Golf & Conference Centre - Bragbury Course
Played On 08/11/2020Never been before - will be back
This is a bit further afield for my group but we were able to get a good tee time at short notice so we made the extra drive and it was absolutely worth it. Absolute gem of a facility, a good honest 18 hole layout which wasn't too challenging but had enough danger to certainly make you think. Plenty of interesting holes with elevation changes and slight doglegs. The on-course maps/signage could do with a refresh as there were a lot of hazards (including a substantial river) that aren't shown on the hole maps on each tee, which was a bit of an issue for first-timers. Fairways were hard and tight due to the recent weather but the greens had been well maintained and were cut a little long/slow, but were fair and rolled true.
Excellent driving range with powertees for a warm-up and a friendly welcome in the pro shop.
Old Fold Manor Golf Club
Played On 07/23/2020Better than evenr
I was a member at Old Fold Manor years ago before moving out of the area and it's clear that they have spent a lot of money enhancing the excellent course layout with some much needed facilities. There is now a covered driving range, which was always lacking and the halfway house is a great addition. Updated signage makes the place look smart and fresh. The course itself was hard and dry (unsurprising) but the greens were still receptive, fast but true. We flew round in a little over 3.5h despite an obviously busy tee sheet, which was a real bonus. Loved it. Will be back again
