Walked

A Step in the Right Direction

Walked the Karoo course and throughly enjoyed the trek and track. This is NOT your normal florida course with no houses on or overlooking the course. Spectacular views, a plethora of natural waste areas, no cart paths (like streamsong they use naturally cut sand/waste areas which enhances the natural feel of the course.

Since this is currently in development expect to see alot of construction but what they are building will be a destination resort.

The course requires good tee shots on many of the holes but on other holes the fairways are extremely wide. Par threes are from 225 yards to as short as 110 yards from the tangerine tees. Greens are huge and undulating with great challenge in terrific and consistent shape, The carts our other twosome used were new and had all the whistles and bells (I think it was $35 more for the cart)

There is NO water to navigate on the course but a number of waste areas and carries make up for the lack of lakes. i did not play the other two courss, the wedge and squeeze but they looked in good shape already.

Course amenities are a "comfort station" and house you pass 4 times when playing Karoo. Good offering of drinks and food. Warmup area and driving range has trackman at each station.

This is currently a great value, but a work in progress. Hard to get a tee time with their current system. MY understanding is rates will change (go up) on October 1st and sometime in the next few months you will be able to book the 30-40 on site buddy houses/cabins for trips.

You could eventually stay here a few days and play all the courses...but no clubhouse yet and just a couple of areas to eat out of some very nice "food trucks"... and a pizza brick over food truck.

Play this place.. it will thrill you and challenge you and its fun and great value now.

Great Value, Helpful staff and fun course

This course winds through some natural areas with very few houses overlooking the course. Greens were in perfect condition. At $45 the very best value for a fun and moderately challenging course.

Great Track... slow play, Greens have issues

Beautiful flat layout with water on many holes. Only complaint was greens were recently punched and had many issues with recent fungus issues. Did not affect the game much but would have been nice to know ahead of time.

Current price is high for value, but it's spring in Florida and I understand.

Great conditions, great value and terrific staff

I was impressed with the quality and conditions of this course at the price point on Golf Now. Upon entering the parking lot a staff member brought a cart directly to my car and welcome me to the Course. Good first impression.

The clubhouse is small, but friendly staff, and got me onto the first T within a few minutes of my arrival. That’s where the fun began. This course is flat, but each hole seems separate from the other. You don’t often see the other holes as you’re playing.

A couple of holes have water and rare elevation changes, but the conditions are so immaculate and perfect that you think you’re playing on a course that should cost two or three times as much.

Would highly recommend this course, and in fact, I’m playing it again today

Surprisingly challenging, with excellent variety

This is an excellent Course if you want to work on your short game, but don’t be surprised if some of the holes are between 175 and 200 yards.

Greens in fairways were in great shape. Most greens head undulations and slopes

Fairways were tree line and some holes had significant elevation changes. I could see this course as a regular track to play to work on the short game and never get boring

Try this place is great value for dollars

Challenging and beautiful course with elevation changes

This is a hidden gem just outside The quaint college town of Granville. Perfect conditions and friendly professional staff made me play the course two days in a row. Front nine is easier than the back nine but slopeing fairways elevated greens and undulations on the greens make it a challenge!

bring all your clubs and practice your putting before going out. Conditions were perfect with even rough surrounding perfectly carpet like fairways.

Great value. Play this course if in Granville

As advertised, incredibly beautiful, challenging and terrific, helpful staff at every encounter….

Situated steps from Colonial Williamsburg, this course meanders through undulating hills and valleys, with spectacular views and interesting golf challenges at every turn. There is water on 5 or 6 holes, a fair number of doglegs and narrow to moderately wide fairways. This course is beautifully landscaped and surrounded by old growth woods. Fairways and greens were “carpet like”. Yes the Par 3’s are picturesque, but so is the rest of the course.

This is a top 100 course that is not ridiculously hard, but will challenge you, especially with your second shot into downhill and uphill protected greens that have a tendency for low liners to roll off the green, sometimes into the protective bunkers.

Staff was friendly and positive, even meeting us at our car with a cart and providing complimentary bottles of water at hole number one. Get there early if you can… good practice area (be sure to practice putting and sand shots) and if you can play with someone with course knowledge, all the better.

Great value for a terrific venue, in outstanding shape.

Meandering Resort course

The day we played, the River Course was booked with a tournament, so we played the Plantation. Check in was easy and professional. Cart path only, so made for a longer day in the hot weather. Some views of the James river and overall a pretty course but not memorable. Many left to right shots off the tee.

Good warmup course for the River. PM is certainly better pace of play. Enjoyed but If we came back, we would make sure to play the River Course.

A hidden Gem that will thrill and challenge you

Challenging, Fun, Links style, dog legs, some blind shots, spectacular views, undulating greens, excellent conditions and professional positive staff.

From the moment you arrive, and view the golf course, you know you are in for a exceptional and rewarding experience. The slope on this course commands you to choose the right Tee box, the right club and to hit accurate shots… If you are errant on any of those decisions, plan on some frustration or losing a ball… however, when it all goes right, this is one of the most rewarding and interesting courses I have played. From the moment we finished our round, I was determined to replay this course again (course knowledge will help) and to let my golf buddies know about this hidden gem.

The clubhouse sits high on a hill with sweeping views of hole one and eighteen. We were met at our car, with a cart, by the warm and friendly staff. After checking in and surprisingly affordable rates, we headed off to the practice range, which was on grass, with a chipping and putting area. If you are playing this course, for the first time, and without someone with course knowledge, the yardage book is helpful for the blind shots and appropriate landing areas. Being on the greens, does not guarantee a two put, being above the hole is a possible three putt.

Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in superb conditions, at times like hitting off a carpet. A plethora of greenside and fairway bunkers were in fair condition, hittable but evidently the recent rain made them inconsistent but playable.

The course meanders through rolling countryside, each hole unique from the other. Par threes present uphill and downhill challenges and if flag placement is at the most difficult area, plan on celebrating a bogey. From its high venue, the first hole is a strong uphill dog leg left, to an elevated green, protected by bunkers… typical of this course. The rolling grasses and rock walls caused one of our players (who grew up in Ireland), to remark that this course reminded him of the courses in Ireland. In fact the Irish flag tops the flag stick on most greens! Wayward shots can find tall grasses and well defined hills, slopes and forested areas, beyond the fairways. You are thinking on every hole and hitting a straight shot may not be the best choice on numerous left and right dog legs.
Long hitters may be tempted to cut the dogleg, but you better know your distance or you will be hunting for your ball. There are only two holes with water the 17th and 18th for a challenging finish, but numerous blind shots or uphill and downhill hole are included with the many doglegs

In short, play this course, and if you can… play with someone who knows the course. I can understand that the pace of play may be slow at times, especially on weekends, with individuals trying to find their balls, but this course was a treat that FAR exceeded my expectations. Will return soon.

Thank you for the great review! Mike Strantz only designed and built seven courses because of his untimely death at age 50. Even so, in 2000 he was named one of the top 10 golf architects of all time along with two of his biggest mentors, Tom Fasio and Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Royal New Kent with its shaping is truly unique and each hole is memorable. Hope to see you again soon.

Challenge and reward

This course sits just 2 miles off of Route 95 and wraps around old prison grounds of Lorton correctional facility Despite being close to the city you feel like you’re out in the country with rare views of houses or development along the course. Historical signs that the Teebox is giving you a sense of the history of this area

The course has five tea boxes and it’s most important to choose the right Teebox for your game or you’ll have a frustrating around. Elevation changes dog legs left and right and pristine interesting greens are the characteristics of this course. course was in excellent condition

As many as five bunkers protect some of the greens and line the fairways turning an errant shot into a sandy par chance. Other errant shots will find their way into the woods or fescue but most fairways are generous ...however approach shots tend to be with elevation either up or down and you won’t find flat lies very often as you approach the greens

This course is a little pricey for a municipal course particular on the weekends however price value is excellent. Staff was friendly and professional ....pace of play was excellent and this is a must play if you’re a golfer in Northern Virginia

Worth the Drive....for the course and the views

This is one of Maryland's top golf courses... and worth the drive....Price/value is excellent when you take into account the quality of this course. You enter the course after driving though the humble and historic town of Myersville... wondering where the course is. A generous and large clubhouse greets you at the top of the hill with an easy area to drop your clubs off…. And you know you are in for a great time after viewing the course on the “way in” and pulling up to the clubhouse!

Scheduling, staff, greeting, those serving food and the cart service were outstanding. Friendly, professional and caring.

The course:

First there are three practice areas, the driving range, a large green and a chipping, putting and bunker area tucked in front of the clubhouse... Definitely get there early to warm up and take advantage of these areas... the chipping area also has a two tiered green which comes in handy as you get out to the course.

Water only comes into play on one or two holes. Every hole is different with wide landing zones in some cases landing zones that narrow down to 30 yards on other holes. Dog legs left and right and perhaps 3 holes that are “blind”. The course has incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys… breathtaking and serene would be the words I would use to describe the views.

Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Bunkers were one step below, but only on a few holes did they need a little work. The course has four tee boxes so you can adjust to your game. The par threes are shorter, unless you play from the tips. There are no houses on the course and each hole feels separate from the other, as you would expect in this rural area. The hilly area leads to some uphill and downhill lies as well as approach shots both to elevated greens and greens you have to hit a downhill approach.

As a 10-12 handicap I would rate the course of moderate difficulty, but requiring a very accurate tee shot on about half the holes. Out of bounds tends to be “in the woods” or in the fescue. About 1/3 of the greens are relatively flat, with the others split between tiered and undulated.

If you have the chance, plan on some “porch time” on the 19th hole overlooking the 9th and 18th hole… Beautiful elevated view of the course and a great way to unwind in this quiet gem of central Maryland.

In the country but no elbow room?

Course is a fair track, that is farily short on most holes. Greens, fairways, tee boxes all in good shape.

The greens, often are within 50 - 75 yds of the next t box which for some golfers makes for challenges as far as safety is concerned. It seems that one hole is right next to the other.,.. fair value and I have to say our sandwich at the turn, cooked outside on the grill was one of the best and tastiest pork BBQ I have ever had!

You can tame the Tiger

Quality at value, defines Trump Red tiger. My son and I played this course with two others, on a warm day in February, at the "hot deal" price. Shot at 86, even losing 2 balls to the water. I am a "bogey senior golfer".

Upon entering the property, you have a choice to valet or self park, leave time to take the shuttle if self parking. The course is comprised of 6 par 5's, 6 par 4's and 6 par 3s, so good variety, but more par 3s than other courses. Fairways are wide and forgiving however water comes into play, on an errant shot on 70% of the holes. Greens are well protected by bunkers but roll true and were in excellent shape. If you choose the right tee,, this course is forgiving and fair, with no trick holes. Having the GPS on the cart helped with distances and hazards to make you feel like you knewthe course, even if it's your first time (our first time). Staff is friendly, service oriented and positive.

Two tips... since we were heading to the airport after our round, the club granted us access to locker room showers.... a real bonus... just ask.
Secondly, I found out that military and first responders can play for $50, on M - Thurs, from April 1 to Dec 31, and that one of the courses, the Silver Fox, is $50 for miltiary even during peak season. This does NOT inlcude the blue monster.

In summary, well maintained excellent course with superior service and value. I will play again.

Walked

Great Value and Views at this Venue

Just finished playing three rounds on the north course right before it closes for farmers open

As a single (sandwiched golf between a conference) it was easy to get on the north course. Got on the website 3 days ahead as a non resident 7 pm pst) and found numerous options to play. Early golfers before 730 were able to get around in 3.5 hours walking. Was cart path only; prior to the PGA event, so walk it.

Definitely have lunch or a snack at the Torrey pines grill. You can see the course and putting green and ocean! If you have the time the outdoor fireplace or table fire pits make for a great 19th hole and relaxing venue

Tips. Bring water... a number of the course water fountains were not working. Leave time to walk from parking lot to starter to practice range (about 400 to 600 yds apart) and have to check in minimum 30 min early n be on tee 10 min early
Rough will eat your balls especially if foggy, early am or overcast ...bring extra socks. IF you are a single and want to play either course, at least in January, I found it quite easy to walk on if you come in around 0700. There are no discounts, for anyone except residents... and they pay 1/2 to 1/3 what guests from out of town pay, however I still thought it was great value.

Beverage cart makes frequent appearances.

The course, played from the proper tees for your game, is not difficult. I would consider it fair without a lot of hidden greens or tricky holes. Greens were fast in prep for the farmers open. Most greens were large and easy to approach when the flag was not hidden behind a bunker. A few doglegs that have you choosing between driver to cut the dogleg or 3 wood to be safe. The views on the back nine, along the pacific are awe inspiring.

very much enjoyed the course

"Tough day" was Tough

This course is challenging... especially on "tough day" where every pin is set up on the most difficult area of the green. Greens were in excellent shape with many challenging dog legs and out of bounds created by water, streams and lakes. If you don't know this course, or play with someone who does, there are surprises where streams and hazards, not visible from the tee, will eat your shot, unless you are told to lay up, etc., Staff was professional and positive. Pace was excellent.

Enjoy, but if you are a bogey golfer like me, expect to donate a couple balls to the course even when you make a "good" shot.

Winter Gem in Houston

Played the tournament course two times while visiting Houston over President's Weekend. Staff, Starter and Marshals were polite, professional and welcoming. A real bonus to playing this course is the incredible practice facilities including four separate greens and many bunkers and chipping areas to work on your short game as well as a driving range. Getting their early to warm up as this incredible practice area was well worth it!

The course is prepping for the upcoming PGA tournament and was in outstanding shape, in spite of the recent weeks of rain. On almost all occasions, according to a member we played with, this course is "cart path only". ..making for a 4 -4.5 hrs round, however also preserving the fairways to near perfect winter shape. The course offers four tee boxes per hole so you can readily adjust the length of your game to the T box selection. Bunkers and water are plentiful on many holes and help to make this relatively flat course challenging and interesting. In spite of being close to the airport, the course is replete with natural beauty and even offered us a view of a bald eagle and Bobcat, while we were playing. A good mix of long par 4's and 5's with dog leg left and right as well as many holes with water and bunkers protecting T shots and approaches to the green. Since we were heading to the airport after our round, the staff generously offered us the member showers...another example of their welcoming spirit to "non-members"

In summary, a great value, especially in the PM, for the average to above average golfer. I would come again in a heartbeat and a definite don't miss if you are in Houston.

One of Maryland's Finest

I drive about 70 Min to reach this course and each time I go, it's worth it. From the call to book a tee time to the last goodbye, the staff in my opinion are helpful, professional and genuinely want to make this a great experience. Carts are equipped with GPS, ball and club cleaners and a handy small Ice and drink holder. The course fee includes range balls and an excellent chipping and putting area.

The Course:
Challenging with long holes weaved into the winding hills. Par 3s, which include two which are well below you (club down two clubs) and two other par 3's between 175 and 200 yds are challenging but fair. At every turn, the course offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The course was in terrific shape, with divots repaired from the previous day and greens in good shape. I am a bogey golfer, over 60 and this course presents some challenges to my inability to drive the T shot more than 225 yds.

The Clubhouse and staff:
Breakfast and lunch were served promptly by staff that were friendly and professional. Had the BBQ Sandwhich and a Caesar Salad...delicious. "Andy", the manager that day was welcoming and positive both when we arrived and upon departing the course. "Cart guys" were right there when needed and upbeat. At least 6 times when playing our round we saw the beverage and snack cart on a Saturday.

Bottom line: I will come again, both for the course conditions and location but also the professional and welcoming staff.

Challenging course worth the Drive

This course meanders through the foothills of the far reaches of Traveler's Rest. Surprisingly excellent warm up area with all the amenities you would expect in a course that hosts the golf digest school.

This is a challenging course for a bogey golfer with excellent views. Although there are some homes along some of the holes, you really feel like you are in the woods versus hitting close to someones backyard. Water comes into play on two of the holes and blind shots occur on two or three holes. Greens were in excellent shape. Staff was friendly and welcoming. A golf cart is required on this hilly, long and challenging course. At the price point its one of the best values in the Greenville area.
