Rolling Oaks at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 11/09/2018Best value for your money in area
Rolling Oaks is a fun and playable design, on an incredible tract of land. I had played Pine Barrens about ten years earlier, and absolutely loved the course. I found Rolling Oaks to be an easier layout, but no less beautiful, and actually has more dramatic views and greensites in my opinion.
Course conditions were excellent overall, only problem I found were some tees that had not been mowed in a few days, and had gone to seed head. Must have been mowing that day, because that was not an issue on the back nine. Fazio designs are among my favorite, as he uses the natural roll of the terrain so well, designs holes that stun you visually, as well as define the layout. His use of the local rocks and sand waste areas around greensites was artistic but simple, and I thought the par 3 number 8 hole was as beautifully elegant a hole as you’ll find anywhere.
For the price, both of these courses are absolute must plays. Pine Barrens will challenge your entire game, and Rolling Oaks will give you unparalleled beauty in this area. All that, less than an hour drive from the Tampa airport.
The only drawback is a small, somewhat limited clubhouse, but did get a good beer and sandwich following the round. Also, the carts were quite old, and in need of updating/repair. (Ours had a broken windshield, and very soft handling.)
All in all, an A+ must play courses set on a great tract of completely natural land in south central Florida.
Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation
Played On 10/19/2018Decent place for the money
I’ve played here a few times, and it is always pretty enjoyable. We played as a twosome, and a couple groups of four happily let us play through, which kept our round under 4 hours.
Greens were a bit spotty in places, fairways were solid, and the rough was late summer Bermuda yuck, as it should be this time of year in the Carolinas.
Never been a huge fan of the layout, far too much placement golf ( hit the driver 4 times all day), but the conditions are solid, and the clubhouse amenities are first rate. Good value for the money, and a fun round for the average golfer, I’m sure.
The Golf Club at Ballantyne
Played On 09/21/2018Country club experience
Ballantyne hotel golf course is far and away the best daily fee course in Charlotte area. It is a country club experience. Conditions are immaculate, and they have some of the best greens around of ANY area course.
Solid test of golf from the back tees, and a back 9 of 3 each par 3’s, par 4’s, par 5’s is unique and fun. Beautiful views abound, and an aesthetically pleasing layout. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and with a resort hotel on premises, food and drink after the round is top quality.
A tad more pricey than other area daily fee courses, but well worth it. Would recommend this course to anyone.
Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Played On 09/08/2018Nice layout, great value
As stated earlier, new management has returned this course to one of the best values in the HHI area. I almost always enjoy Palmer designs, and this is no different, though in true Hilton Head fashion, there are a few quirks. Having a yardage book would have saved me 2-3 shots, but, generally speaking, most everything is out in front of you.
Tees, fairways, and greens were all in pretty good shape, even if the greens ran a little slow and bumpy a couple weeks after being punched. Good test of golf from the correct tee markers, and some very beautiful views (9 and 17 come to mind.) Great value for the price.
Old South Golf Links
Played On 08/08/2018Very disappointed
This is about the sixth or seventh time I’ve played this course, and I keep telling myself I won’t come back, but I do. This will be the last time.
The tees and greens were horrible. I chose to play here, because the conditions are almost always good, but barren tee boxes, and burnt out greens abounded. The fairways were fine, but that was about it.
The layout is what always makes me not want to come back, and that hasn’t changed. Too much “goofy golf” for my tastes. There are some good holes, but there are 4-5 holes that should be completely redone, imo.
Paid almost $50 per person for an afternoon hot deal, and even that price is no value. Rather spend the money to play the better courses on island. Better golf, better value for me.
Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
Played On 12/22/2017Very nice track
Played Robbers Row for our second trip to Port Royal, and really enjoyed our round. Greens were fantastic...held good shots, were nice and quick, and putted true.
Liked the layout better than Barony, which is supposed to be their top track. A few "goofy" holes on Barony, where Robbers was laid out with everything in front of you. Not the longest or most demanding, but a good mix of doglegs and gentle meanderings that defined the holes. Couple 420+ par 4's ( from the tips) to start the back side, and a drive over marsh and trees on backside par 5 made for some fun, but demanding shots.
The fairways were generous enough, but some of the tee boxes were rough, only reason I didn't rate as 5-star.
Good course for a levels of play, as back tees made me think and perform, and up tees were perfect for my wife.
Absolutely beautiful bar and grill for post round enjoyment, and the staff could not have been nicer. We will definitely be back here, and recommend Port Royal, and especially Robbers Row, highly.
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Played On 09/08/2017Good track, Excellent conditions
This is the best value daily fee course in the HHI area. Layout is solid, though a couple trees take the right side away from the tips, forcing you to hit a fade/straight tee shot, not my forte. Played the ball down all day, never had a bad lie in the fairway. Greens were quick and rolled true, even though they still had some sand top dressing on them.
Staff was nice and friendly, actually gave us towels to use on course to wipe balls/clubs. Clubhouse is fine, but there are so many other places to eat and drink nearby, it's almost superfluous.
Always on my short list of places to play when I'm on island.
Dolphin Head Golf Course
Played On 09/07/2017Nice course for every golfer
Course is solid if unspectacular. Had recently punched greens, and they were pretty slow, but rolled well, not bumpy. Layout is on the easy side with more generous landing areas than many area courses, and not very lengthy. Good course for varied levels of player. I played the tips and it wasn't especially challenging, but I enjoyed the round. All 4 par 5s easily reachable, but two are water carry, risk/reward shots.
Played late afternoon, and got good attention from the staff, and the pace of play was stellar...3 hours 15 minutes for the wife and I...thanks to two foursomes letting us play through promptly.
Value is so-so, as there are better layouts that cost a little less, but may not be quite as well manicured, and there are courses with better conditions, but they generally cost more.
All in all, a solid place to play, that is playable for any level golfer.
Bear Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/06/2015Typical Rees Jonez
Jones course where the fairways are defined by numerous bunkers. Terrific greens running 11-13 on the stimp. Would recommend for more advanced golfers, bur 5 sets of tees helps the higher handicapper. Best greens you'll play on for this proce. See what the pros do on a weekly basis.
Thank you so much for playing Bear Creek! We are glad that you thought the greens were in good shape. Please come out and see us again!
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Played On 08/03/2015Always a good time
This course does it right for a resort daily fee facility. Quality conditions on a solid layout. Staff is friendly and accomodating. One OC the places we always look forward to visiting in Hilton Head.
Reems Creek Golf Course
Played On 05/29/2015Mountain golf, decent value
Fairways were clover filled, but relatively lush. Greens slow, but in decent shape. Layout definitely mountain goofy, with a number of blind shots, and where do I go? head scratches. All in all, not terrible for $30, but if I lived up there, I'd probably play elsewhere for my daily play.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
Played On 05/28/2015Picked a bad day to play...
...as they were aerating 9 of the greens. So we played 9 on Jones, 9 on Jackson. Jones course is beautiful, but cold winter/early spring and recent lack of water have taken a toll on the fairways. Many patches where the Bermuda has yet to respond. Greens on Jackson course we're much better, but a couple of the holes were "goofy" golf. Hope to return to Jones course under better conditions. Staff was VERY accommodating and nice, making the experience that much better.
Monument at Troon North Golf Club
Played On 10/11/2014All around spectacular...MUST play
I was looking forward to playing one of the top 100 courses in America, and though we didn't get to play the championship course (Pinnacle), the Monuments course did not disappoint. Absolutely gorgeous surroundings, with quail, roadrunners, and lizards running everywhere. Incredible scenery from almost every teebox, and ideal conditions. Smooth manicured fairways, quick, but receptive greens, and fair but from time to time challenging layout. Worth the drive, and every penny. Can't wait to go back and attack the Pinnacle! Bring your camera!
South at Boulders Golf Club & Resort
Played On 10/10/2014Beautiful area, nice course
First time playing golf in this area of the country and enjoyed it immensely. Boulders is a beautiful resort, with great vistas, wildlife, and the course was fun to play also. They had recently over seeded , so the conditions weren't ideal, and I found the greens to be a little soft (footprints were easily visible everywhere) but the course was fun and challenging. Don't think I'd recommend this, or any of the better courses in the area to less accomplished golfers, unless they don't mind losing a bunch of balls.
Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Played On 09/30/2014Awesome value for the Hilton Head area
Played just after overseeding, so the fairways were less than great, and the greens a little slow, but nothing unexpected. Hilton Head golf can get a little pricey, but this course gives you a fantastic deal. The course has some challenging holes, but not too demanding. The conditions were what I expected, and for the most part solid. After playing courses that cost 2-3 times more than Crescent, and were similar, or worse conditions wise, I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a good value track. Pace of play was just a bit slow, about 4 1/2 hours plus, but we were only a twosome.
Island West Golf Club
Played On 07/31/2014Good value in HH
First time playing here after passing it by for so many years. Found the course to be a decent layout, but some unseen water hazards, even after asking about them. Greens were okay as were fairways and tees...little crabgrass problem though.
Overall, it is a tremendous value for a Hilton Head course. Just expect no frills golf.
The Legends Golf Course at Parris Island
Played On 07/29/2014Well worth the trip
Had read rave reviews about this course so decided to try it out. Man, was I glad I did. Very playable layout from all sets of tees, no homes anywhere near, gorgeous views of true low country salt marshes, and very solid conditions for a course of this price.
Greens were a bit firm, but putted fast and true. Fairways we sound so could play it as it lays without issue. Solid test from the tips, but easily scoreable. Staff was friendly and accommodating, and though range was just okay, balls were VERY reasonable. Overall, this course has got to be one of the best values in the area, I highly recommend it.
Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run
Played On 07/28/2014Expensive dog track
Don't waste your money, there are many other good courses in the area to play that cost the same or less, and are in far better condition. Very slow greens, long, unmown fairways, and bunkers strewn with gravel made this a very unenjoyable visit. I played the course many years ago after it was built and found it okay, but after this round, I can assure anyone that I will not be back. Thank goodness I got a Golfnow hot deal, or I would have been REALLY upset!
Regent Park Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2014Gone to seed
It was a shame to see the condition that this course was in after enjoying it as a member some 7-8 years ago. The layout is still fun, but the greens were in very poor shape, and the tees and fairways he'd not been mowed for so long that the Bermuda seed heads were popping up everywhere. Cups looked like they had not been recut in days. Don't know if it's due to lack of funds or lack of quality maintenance, but this once fine track is struggling.
Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 04/25/2014Great place, mediocre conditions
This course has a quality layout, though some tight drives. Beautiful scenery and wildlife is offset by poor fairways (couldn't tell the cut line from fairway to rough, and it really didn't matter). Greens were hard and fast. Putted pretty true, but old Bermuda grass, yet cut down enough to not make grain an issue. For $25 it was decent value. A muni course with a CC layout and scenery.
We are sorry you did not enjoy your day. By August the greens are in need of aerification which was done 8/14 & 8/15 . Once healed they will be faster. Tee boxes are on the schedule for maintenance so please try us again next year.
