Total Disappointment

First, with the exception of the par-3 holes and maybe 2-3 other holes, the layout is a complete joke. There were several par-4's where I could not hit my driver, and I was playing the blue tee boxes. I teed-off with a 7-iron on one hole, a 6-iron on another hole, and a 4-iron on two holes. One hole, I forget which number, has a rip-rap filled drainage ditch I guess running RIGHT IN THE LANDING AREA. I hit a good drive, it was heading just right of the ditch and would have been perfect, but the fairway is pitched toward the ditch right there and yep, my well-hit ball bounced left and into the ditch. STUPID design. And rolling fairways? HA! For one hole on the back, you have to tee-off to a severely up-sloped fairway, so severe that you cannot see if the group ahead of you has moved on or not! I could go on, but the layout is terrible. Second, the trash can at every tee box was overflowing and trash was all over the ground. Third, I go into the golf shop (which has virtually no merchandise, forget about buying a sleeve of balls) to get waters and crackers, but he had no crackers and everything in the cooler was frozen solid. And of course, the grill was closed and I could get nothing in there. GREAT! The guy at the golf shop counter grabbed me a couple of bottles of water from the grill, but did he offer to grab me some crackers as well? Of course not. Fourth, the greens were like concrete and the fastest I have ever played. Fifth, it took us nearly two and a half hours to play the back thanks to a 3-threesome that was holding everybody up. This was a total waste of my time and my money. I only played here because of the positive reviews. Needless to say, I was hugely disappointed.

Mega Disappoint

I've played this course many times over the past 3 years and it is in the worst condition I have ever experienced. It is usually in very good condition but this time, well, it looked more like a highly-used muni course than a semi-private course. And it's just April 20th! Most tee boxes are extremely bare, and this isn't a matter of the bermuda not having started growing yet. Lost of bare areas in the fairways, again not just due to the bermuda not having come out of dormancy. The greens were not too bad, and were probably in the best condition of everything. I won't play that course again, not until it's in much, much better condition. I'll drive a lot further to play a better course and at least feel like my money was well spent.

Usually good condition

I play Chestatee about once every two weeks or close thereto. They always have favorable Hot Rate Deals and it's an enjoyable course. The dry weather has taken its toll on the course like many others, but nevertheless it's in good condition. Tee boxes are overall good, fairways are dry but good, and greens are good. The only negative was the condition of the sand traps. Not a lot of sand in many of the traps and if you are not very careful, your club head will skip off the base, maybe an inch below the surface, and you will shoot the ball over the green. Please, take care of the bunkers.

An Honest Review

Here is an honest and to-the-pont review. The elevation changes are significant from Hole 1 to Hole 18, with only two flat holes which were par-3s. Lots of blind shots to fairways that slope away and you have no idea what is beyond the crest of the fairway. Several holes I could not hit driver because I would end up with a severe down-hill lie, so I had to hit an iron. The tee box conditions were not even mediocre, quite bad. The fairways were average condition. The greens were terrible. Lots of bare areas and they have been heavily sanded. Forget accurate putting. I would not play there again even if it was free. Just a ridiculous layout with ridiculous elevation changes. Whoever built the course must not have believed in actually moving dirt to make a layout.

Loved It

If this course wasn't so far from my house (61 miles) it would be my new go-to course. The layout is very fair and enjoyable, no holes were extremely difficult nor did you get penalized for good shots. A lot of the fairways had some gentle, and maybe a little more than gentle for some, elevation changes to them and for some of them, you couldn't see the final landing area from the the tee box. But the fairways were generous and the rough, for the most part, was as well. If you hit your tee shot reasonably well, you were going to have a good lie and reasonable shot to the green. The fairways were, in truth, the best I have played this year. Always a great lie in the fairway, no thin lies, no half-grass and half-dirt lies. Best fairways around. Greens had just been punched but no matter, I could tell they were otherwise in great condition and when they have recovered, putts would run true. I would love to come back. I just wish it was closer to home.

Not A Fan

We paid an extremely low green fee by using GolfNow and the fact that there were thunderstorms in the area and we made the reservation on-line just minutes before teeing off. The course was in the second-best condition of all other courses I have played around Atlanta this year. That's about my only positive take-away from Cherokee Run. I had played the course many years ago but didn't remember the layout. The rolling nature of the layout can be extreme at times and you can be guaranteed that with the exception of one or two holes at the most, you are NOT going to get a reasonably flat lie in the fairway. The ball WILL be above your feet or below your feet or on a sidehill lie. The tree-lined fairways make the fairways look quite narrow. The rough...oh my goodness, the bermuda rough was so deep and thick that most of the time youi need a bloodhound to find your ball if you miss the fairway. A scratch or single-digit handicap golfer would find the course enjoyable and challenging. But for double-digit handicap golfers, it will be much more than challenging.

Disappointing

I should have taken seriously the reviews I read before I chose this course. The conditions were extremely disappointing for a course that has Jack Nicklaus' name on it. The grass was thin on fairways and tee boxes, nowhere near full coverage. The driving range was plush and beautiful. The course was totally different. There were lots of bare areas along the edges of the fairways. What made it worse was that I had to rent a set of clubs for more than the rate I paid to play the course because (long story.) I was so looking forward to playing a really nice golf course on Hilton Head, but I chose the wrong course. At least the greens were in great condition, no issues with them. Now let's see if the management of the golf course will explain the lacking course conditions instead of the canned response of "Sorry for your disappointing experience, we continue to strive to provide an enjoyable experience for our customers."

Read several good reviews for this course so I took my dad out and played it today. The layout/design of the course is an absolute joke. #1: Numerous blind tee shots, with several par-4's where you have to lay-up with an iron or hybrid off the tee or else your ball will run-out into an unseen water crossing. #2: Mounded greens where 2-3 sides of the green have steep slopes away from the green so if you miss the green, you have a good chance at getting double-bogey. #3: Very few, if any, flat places on the golf course. The ball is generally going to be above your feet or below your feet, or you are going to have a down-hill lie on your second shot. Aside from the joke of a layout, the fairways were very hard-packed and so you felt like the ball was sitting on hard-pan most of the time instead of sitting on grass. The greens were in great condition, but they had been covered with sand recently and were running very fast. If you are above the hole, watch-out, the ball will get away from you very easily. The driving range was VERY dry and the ropes had not been moved recently, so again hitting off of hard-pan and not grass most of the time. I'll never go back.

The description of the course said that it had come under new ownership in 2008 and improvements have been made. Well, 14 years later and more improvements are definitely needed. The cart paths are atrocious. Several tee boxes were nothing but dirt. Fairways were okay considering they are bermuda and still not grown in for the year. The greens were in great condition and were very fast. Whoever decides where to set the pins apparently thinks everybody who plays the course is a scratch golfer or there is a tournament being played, as many pins were just a 3-4 yards from the edges of the greens. One pin was placed on a slope, just a couple of yards from the edge of the green. NO WAY to stop the ball, it would just roll 10-12 feet past the hole even at a snail's pace. RIDICULOUS! And whoever cuts the holes needs some serious training. Terrible job on a lot of greens. There is no driving range, just two matts off to the side where you hit into a net. Lots of blind shots and trouble, but nothing on the scorecard or at the tee boxes showing the layout of the holes so if you haven't played there previously, you have no idea where the trouble is on several holes. If you are local, maybe it's a good course to play but do NOT make a long drive to play this course. I'll pay more money to play a nicer course closer to where I live.

Fivesomes-Should not be allowed

Membership has its privileges...which apparently includes playing in fivesomes and holding up play. We got behind two fivesomes and at the four hour mark, we were just standing on #16 tee. At least two holes were open in front of the first group. I love this course. I hate its policy of allowing members to play in fivesomes.

A Little Slow

Pace of play was too slow. There were three starters on the first tee, it would have been nice if one of them had been in the course to keep play moving. 4-1/2 hour round. Greens were lightning quick. Fairways were average. This time of year you can expect thin grass on non-overseeded fairways and very soft ground.

Designed For Failure

This golf course in my opinion is basically designed for failure for the average golfer. WAY too many fairway bunkers, on many holes the bunkers are built where, if you miss the fairway, you are in the sand. Way too many greens where there is virtually no place to miss. A couple of yards to one side, you are in bunkers. On the other side and back you are down in a swell and have a very challenging chip to a green that is several feet higher then where your ball is. Then you factor in the extreme elevation changes on many holes. Plus extremely fast greens. I will NOT come back out and play this course.

Skip It!

Spend your money somewhere else. The description on Golf Advisor made this course sound very good and worth the time but it wasn’t. Hosted professional events? Maybe a long, long time ago but that was well before the current ownership/management let the course go to pot. Fairways had patchy grass that was like a steamroller had rolled over it. I preferred being in the rough where the ball had grass under it. Same for the tee boxes. I played with a member who said due to the declining conditions the course had lost 80% of its membership. Spend your money somewhere else.

Nice but difficult

First time playing this course. Very nice, very good condition. Lots of bumps and humps in the fairways, which made some shots challenging. Greens are the most challenging I have ever played, the extreme bumps and elevation changes on the greens were in many cases ridiculous. That just isn’t necessary to make a course and the greens challenging but fun.

Good course

I enjoyed this course. Some challenging holes but nothing unfair or over-penalizing. I actually replayed. Enjoyed it except for the soft and deep rough, where I lost two balls on hole #10 and I assume the balls plugged. Cut the rough!

Wait for the lawn mower!!!!!

What a huge disappointment! The tees and fairways were over-seeded and have not been cut. The grass is very high all over the tees and fairways and the rough. Due to rain, the ball plugs on nearly every shot and since the grass is so high you can lose your ball in the fairway easily. The greens are so-so at best, very slow, not rolling very well. My recommendation is to WAIT until they start cutting the grass again, THEN go play. Usually I would have replayed the course but not this one, not today.
