About
Low single digit player. 6600-6900 yard courses are the sweet spot for me. I grew up playing bent grass courses in New England, but play the majority of my golf now at private course in greater Richmond, VA.

The Federal Club
Played On 08/09/2014Outstanding track
Arguably the best course in central VA. Bent grass throughout. Conditions are superb. The first six holes are about as difficult as it gets - but still plenty of birdie holes out there. I have played a lot of golf all over the mid atlantic, and can honestely say, I'd put this course up with any of them. It recently was a US Amatuer Qualifier host site, and from the scores - more than held its own. I never miss an opportunity to play here - and would reccommend to anyone in the area to play it.
Spring Creek Golf Club

Spring Creek is as good as it gets for the money. Challenging layout, about 20 minutes east from Charlottesville. Big bent grass greens, with a good bit of elevation changes and hole layouts. Highly reccommend.
Dormie Club
Played On 04/12/2014Terrific Track
A little off the beaten path of Pinehurst village - but well worth the 10 minute drive out of town. I cannot understand why this place doesn't get more play. Dramatic holes, excellent condition, and demanding on multiple fronts. Definetely designed for the walker - so grab your bag (or a caddie) and go. I make 2 trips a year down to Pinehurst and now always make sure to have the Dormie Club part of the plan. Have enjoyed it so much, that last 2x have played 36 - replay rates are very reasonable. Would highly recommend.
Old Trail Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2012Great weekend getaway course
Played there for the first time 2 weeks ago. Place is a hidden gem. Coming from Richmond its a bit of a hike (90 minutes) but well worth it. Course is reasonably challenging (we played it from the tips without too much trouble). Hole 2 is a beast - 240 yard par 3 - but the rest of the course was very playable, open, and very fair. If the wind is blowing, I imagine it can play sneaky long.
The course is right in the middle of the valley - with mountain gazing all around. Great choice this time of year with the foliage. Greens were pretty large, and some had some serious undulation. Stop at Blue Mountain Brewery (off route 151) for a victory beer afterwards (about 8 minutes away) I highly recommend.
The Club At Viniterra

Rather than drive all the way out to Williamsburg, enjoy a 1st rate club within 20 minutes of downtown Richmond.

Fast greens, terrific layout. VERY long from back tees
Independence Golf Club - Championship
Played On 09/02/2012Home of the VSGA
Independence is a good track and you can get a pretty good value there, especially in the evenings or during the week. Be cautious about weekend morning rates in season as can be a bit pricey (90bucks or so).
Very enjoyable course to walk and some serious real estate to look at (especially on back 9). 1st three holes are tough, but the the course opens up a bit. Greens generally in good shape, and the practice facility as well as the clubhouse are terrific. Great deal going right now, whatever you shot for the day (say 83) thats what your 1st on draft beer costs in the club house (83 cents).
