I used to hate this course . . .

. . . but not anymore. Played it when it first opened and it was in terrible shape -- greens and fairways spotty with grass coverage (they opened it too soon) and didn't like the layout. Still didn't like it in the following years as I found that playing from the blues it just beat me up and was too penal. A few months ago, tried again -- this time from the whites and it was a real pleasure. Same experience this week. Shortening the course let me hit less than driver at times and the challenge was still there, since most of the trouble is in green surrounds and on the greens themselves. Conditioning is fantastic. Fairways cut low so if you hit it in the fairway you get the run-out you deserve. Greens lightning fast, but pure, with humps and mounds that greatly affect each putt. This course is now one of my favorites.

A Gem Hidden in South Windsor

Everything you want in a par 60 executive course -- great pace of play, good layout, the ability to use every club in your bag and immaculate conditions (maybe the best maintained public course in the state). I play here very early in the day a few times a week and can get around in a cart in well less than 1 1/2 hours. Great pro shop people, a fine restaurant, grass range -- I can't say enough good things about this place.

A good experience

Always enjoy playing King's Way. Got hooked up with another single and we had a great time together. Course design is great and very challenging from the blue tees. Only downside is greens are cut very high and roll much too slowly. Too bad, given that architect Brian Silva designed some great greens with lots of slopes, humps, bumps and hollows. Slowness of the greens don't let you experience the challenges of the green designs.

Our Go-To Course

First, let me say that I've been playing Century Hills (now Rolling Greens) regularly for decades. For those who don't know, it was designed by Geoffrey Cornish, a nationally known architect who's done a lot of work on Cape Cod and elsewhere. The routing is magnificent and it's a real challenge given tight fairways, ponds, trees and a number of elevated greens. Sadly, due to lack of funding, they filled in all but a handful of bunkers years ago so they play as grass "depressions." The small maintenance staff does what it can with limited resources, but there's sometimes no definition between fairways and rough and the tees are universally horrible -- not only divots everywhere, but cut VERY high (If at all. When's the last time you teed up a driver and the ball was below the top of the driver? It's like teeing up in the rough.) and many are crowned so there's no level lies. Greens, surprisingly, are always in decent shape despite the lack of care. I play here at least once a week and dream about years past when it was in good shape. Too bad, because if it was manicured with bunkers restored I believe people would flock to it -- but then, I wouldn't have the course to myself, as I often do. I recommend this course, reluctantly, to die-hards who can appreciate what it could be with some attention.

A great experience

Have played this course several times over the past few years. I consider it the best, high-end, daily fee course in the state. Amazing design, beautiful topography and always in great condition. Everyone on the staff -- from cart support, to pro shop, to maintenance crew -- were extremely friendly and courteous. I will be back.

Great Course -- Stuffy Staff

Played an end-of-season round at my favorite "high-end" course in the state and, as usual, was not disappointed. Course was in immaculate shape -- no leaves on tees, fairways, greens and even cart paths between holes. Very challenging due to the cold/wind. Still an amazing design. Played here multiple times and only drawback is attitude of pro shop staff who collectively act as if you should be honored just to play their course. Not very friendly or cheerful. I think for the prices they charge, the customer service should be a little more "customer" oriented. Can't complain about the cart/bag personnel, though. Those guys are great.

A Reborn Treat

So great to see this gem be restored to its former glory. Played it once at least 25 years ago and it was in such sad shape. They've done a marvelous job bringing it back. Not long, but undulating fairways make it challenging with lots of side hill lies (they still need to grow in a bit in places). The greens are what make the course. Beautiful shape and extremely undulating which makes most putts a real challenge. Can't wait to go back and play the full 18!
