About

I am a mid single digit handicap player. I've been playing since age 8. I don't do anything really well, but I don't do anything really poorly either.

I used to think I was on the cusp of being good. Now I just play to have fun. I love Midwestern golf and especially finding hidden gems!

Fun but Rough Around the Edges

Reflection Bay is a Jack Nicklaus design in Henderson Nevada. It has many of the hallmarks of Nicklaus designs, which makes it very challenging. There are not many run-up areas so you will need to be able to hit greens through the air to play well.

The Greens at Reflection Bay were in horrible condition. The Pro shop staff told us it was because the overseed has not yet grown in. These were by far the worst greens we played on our trip to the Vegas area. To the credit of the golf course, they owned up to the condition of the greens and offered a discount.

The holes along Lake Las Vegas are the best holes on the golf course. I wish there had been more holes that played along the lake.

Overall Reflection Bay is fun to play once, but it's not something I would go way out of my way to play again.

Could Play Every Day

The Ledges Golf Club in St George Utah is the kind of golf course I could play every day. It's very fair and you won't lose a ton of golf balls, but it's also got some really good character and presents enough challenge to test your game.

The front nine feels very links like and moves over a fairly flat piece of land. The holes are getable, but the greens present enough of a challenge that you have to be careful. You need to be on the right side of slopes in order to avoid three putting.

The back nine is a bit more dramatic with significant elevation change, and stunning views. After an opening par 3, you cross the road and play 11 through 17 in some rugged country. I absolutely loved this stretch of golf.

The Ledges was in great condition, tee to green. It's clear that the club prides itself in the total experience. If you're in St George, I highly recommend finding time to play The Ledges Golf Club.

A Toned Down Wolf Creek

Falcon Ridge is a nice compliment to Wolf Creek. It's not as over the top as Wolf Creek, it's a bit more fair and definitely more scoreable.

Falcon Ridge is really a tale of two nines. The front nine winds its way through a residential area and is pretty tame. The holes lack a bit it of character. It's a fun 9 holes but not overly memorable.

The back 9, however, is a different story. The back nine reminds me a lot of Wolf Creek with dramatic elevation changes and an interesting routing through desert canyons. Holes 10 through 16 wouldn't look out of place on neighboring Wolf Creek.

Falcon Ridge wasn't in the best condition when we played. It had only been 10 days since their overseed and conditions could have been better.

Falcon Ridge is a fun Golf Course and makes a nice compliment to Wolf Creek on a 36-hole day. If you're in the Mesquite area and you've already played Wolf Creek then I recommend Falcon Ridge. I think you'll enjoy it!

Video Game Golf

Wolf Creek is a golf course that many of us have seen growing up playing video games. This was always the course that kicked my butt on Tiger Woods Golf. So it was fun to finally see it in person.

Wolf Creek is not for the faint of heart. You need to pick the right set of tees, and have the right attitude. You're going to lose some golf balls but you're also going to hit some hero shots. The course asks you to pick a line and a Target and hit the shot, and if you do you'll be rewarded. If you don't hit the shot, you're probably in the desert and taking a penalty shot.

Our group had an absolute blast! We all knew what we were in for and so we just embraced it and I think everyone had one to two highlight shots. They were birdies to be made as well as eagles but also doubles and worse.

The conditions of Wolf Creek were the best that we saw in the Mesquite / St George area. The overseed was really successful and the course was playing very nicely. The greens were rolling true and fast.

Wolf Creek is not a course I would play everyday but it is a course that everyone should experience at least once. And if I'm ever back in the Mesquite area, I will definitely play it again!

So Much Fun

The Sand Hollow Links Course is a nice nine-hole compliment to the championship course. If the links course had 18 holes, it would probably be the best course on the property. The layout is very simple, and the routing is unique. But its simplicity is what makes it so much fun.

Compared to the championship course, the greens on the links course have more character. They have bigger slopes and more potential pin locations. The bunkers on the links course have a less maintained more wild look.

The Links Course is not overly difficult, unless the wind is blowing. We had 20 people in our group and the first group finished before a little storm blew through and scored the best. As the wind kicked up the remaining groups struggled a bit to finish strongly.

If you're at Sand Hollow make sure you make time to play The Links Course. You'll have a blast and want to go back out again.

Great Layout in Southern Utah

The Sand Hollow Championship course is a great test located near St George Utah. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and scenery that includes Zion National Park in the distance, Sand Hollow is a feast for the eyes while also being a test for the golf game.

The front nine moves over relatively flat land, with the exception of one and nine. It's a fun 9 holes but doesn't compare to what you see on the back nine. The back nine starts off with a massive par 5, and then moves to the holes along the canyon. Holes 11 through 15 are some of the most scenic you will see and are very challenging. In order to play well you have to summon the courage to hit shots with a canyon to your left.

The greens at Sand Hollow are very fair and not overly wild. The bunkers have a kept look that fits with the overall aesthetic of the property. The sand and the bunkers is more like clay, but it plays very nice and nobody in our group had significant issues with it.

If you are anywhere in the Vegas / St George area, I highly recommend finding a way to play Sand Hollow. You won't regret it..

A Fun Intro to St. George Golf

Dixie Red Hills was the first course of our 20 person golf trip, and provided a great intro to playing golf in the red sand hills around St. George.

The golf course itself is a very different layout. Most of the holes are short and require a lay-up of some sort to get in position for an approach shot. The greens are really large and have some big slopes. So two putting isn't always guaranteed.

Dixie Red Hills won't blow your mind, but it's a nice course for a quick 9 with friends.

A Nice Relaxed Course

The Sun River Golf Club in St George Utah is a very playable Desert Golf option. While not as popular as nearby Sand Hollow, Sun River presents a relaxed round of golf in a golf dedicated community.

The front nine at Sun River is fairly flat and plays around a few ponds. The terrain on the back nine is a bit more extreme and a bit more challenging. I felt like the front and back nine complimented each other really well.

The conditions coming out of the overseed weren't great, but it was playable enough, and I could see that it was going to be in great shape.

Our group found the course very playable. It was challenging enough to be interesting, but not so difficult as to be overly penal. Definitely recommend this course for all skill levels.

Not Much Fun

Coyote Springs is an extremely difficult Golf Course with many typical Jack Nicklaus design elements. This course is designed to be played entirely through the air with minimal options to play the ball on the ground. I honestly do not know how a high handicapper would be able to play this golf course.

The course itself is beautiful with stunning views of the mountains around the area, and there are some interesting holes. But not enough for me to recommend it for others.

In addition when we played, the greens were very slow and the course was overrun with grasshoppers. It appears that the golf course itself needs an infusion of money to maintain the layout.

If you're in the Vegas area, there are better options. Skip Coyote Springs and play something else.

Fun 9 Holer

Fawn Creek is a really fun 9 hole Golf Course located 25 minutes from the Cedar Rapids area. While not overly challenging, Fawn Creek presents multiple tee boxes to play from which results in a feel of more holes than just 9 to play. For example the sixth hole plays as a par 5 from the blue tees, but a par four from the white tees. Similarly, the 9th hole is a par 3 from the blue tees, but a par four from the white tees.

The Greens at Fawn Creek are really good. They have enough slope to challenge even the best putters, and they roll at a nice pace. The rest of the course is in the type of condition you would expect for a Small Town Iowa nine-hole Golf Course. The course isn't perfect, but it's clear the staff really cares and does their best to create a nice experience for their members and guests.

I definitely recommend Fawn Creek and I plan to play it again multiple times.

Great Greens

The Country Club of Sioux Falls is a really nice parkland layout with true greens and excellent overall conditions. Originally designed by Larry Packard, the club was renovated by Jim Lipe in 2017. The result is a playable golf course that will provide even the best players a challenge.

The best aspect of the course is the greens. I've been fortunate enough to travel and play a lot of great golf in 2022, but I haven't putted on many better greens than those at The Country Club of Sioux Falls. They are very fast, and very true, with subtle break that defends the golf course. It's so refreshing to know that if you hit a good putt, it will go in!

I loved the pace of play as well. We were following an interclub event, and still played in under 4 hours. And the course is very walkable.

If you're fortunate to get an invitation to The Country Club of Sioux Falls, I highly recommend you accept. You'll have a great time.

Big and Bold

Landmand is easily the boldest golf course I've ever played. Every hole is massive in scale with bold design features that create a roller coaster round of golf!

The first thing you'll notice as you drive up to Landmand is everything, except the clubhouse, is turned up to 11. From the oversized flag at the top of the hill that you can see from miles away, to the massive, putting green that is shared with the 18th green, it's golf in overdrive!

The golf course itself is very playable, yet still challenging. The fairways and greens are fairly easy to hit in regulation, but that doesn't mean pars and birdies are plentiful. The sheer size of the greens, along with the undulation, brings 3 and 4 putts into play. You have to be in control of your ball to get in the right spots to score.

Landmand is already really good, and it'll be outstanding in a year or two as it grows in. With the course being so new there are still bare spots and thin spots. Additionally the greens have some maturing to do.

Landmand only elevates the already fantastic Nebraska golf scene. Must play if you can make the trek to Homer NE.

A Fun Pete Dye Course

I've been told that the Ackerman-Allen course at Purdue is the easier of the two courses that make up the Boilermaker Golf complex. I found that the Ackerman-Allen course was challenging yet playable. I could see a very good player enjoying this golf course as well as a high handicapper.

I really enjoyed the variety of par fives that this golf course offers. Some were three shotters, while others were reachable in two. The sixth hole is particularly interesting as an aggressive tee shot will open up a chance to go for the green and two.

I found the course to be an excellent condition with very good greens. They rolled true and fast enough without being unfair. Unfortunately the course had seen several inches of rain in the prior days so it didn't play overly firm. I'd like to play it again under firmer conditions.

Overall Ackerman-Allen is a really fun Pete Dye design that incorporates many typical Dye design elements but remains more fair than some of his more famous designs. I highly recommend the Ackerman-Allen course.

Deteriorating Conditions

I wanted to submit at updated review, as I can no longer recommend Gardner Golf Course. Simply put the conditions of the course are horrible, and there really is no excuse as the weather has been pretty mild this entire summer.

The fairways and tees are overgrown with no evidence of having been mowed recently. The greens were the longest and slowest I've ever seen them, and it was clear the cups hadn't been moved recently as the grass had started to grow inward, making the holes actually appear smaller.

Add to that a lack of a beverage cart on the course, and no water coolers other than at the turn, and Gardner has turned into a bad golf experience.

The Details Are Right

Arbor Links is one of, soon to be 7, Dormie Network courses. This is my 2nd Dormie Network course, the other being Dormie Club. One thing both courses have in common is that they get all the little details right that make it a fantastic overall experience.

The first thing you'll notice when you arrive at Arbor Links is the amenities. The carts are first rate with extra cushy seats. The staff that greets you is friendly and welcoming. The clubhouse is simple but really nice.

The golf course itself is in excellent condition. The tees, fairways and greens are all perfect. The sand is consistent, but the bunkers are still a penalty with interesting fingering that makes for a challenge. The greens are fast and true, which makes for an ideal day of putting.

Regarding the golf course, it is a very challenging layout. If you're hitting it well, you can definitely score, but if you start spraying the ball a little bit you will struggle. The no-mow areas come into play pretty quickly. Definitely a ball strikers golf course.

Definitely a must play if you get the chance!

Just Fun

The Mulligan Course at Ballyneal is 12 holes of fun that you can play over and over without getting bored. Grab a couple wedges, your buddies and go hit some shots.

Each of the holes on the Mulligan Course has unique character, and the greens all have slopes to feed your ball to or away from the hole. It is a really fun time! We didn't see any 1s in our group, but we had lots of 2s.

If you get to Ballyneal, make time to play the Mulligan Course.

Nothing Else Like It!

Ballyneal is a golf experience like none other. From the dirt road up to the property to the simple driving range to the world class golf course, everything is unique and wonderful at Ballyneal.

The golf course itself it amazing. There is plenty of width off the tee to allow for aggressive play, while still presenting the player with enough trouble to make you think.

The playing surface is firm and fast. We played a day after a rare rainfall so some of the fire was taken out of the course, but it was still plenty bouncy.

The greens at Ballyneal are the star. There are almost always feeder slopes to get the ball close but if you get on the wrong side of those slopes, watch out! There are many birdies out there, but double or worse is always lurking.

I recommend arriving early if you're fortunate to be invited and spend a lot of time on the practice putting green. It's wild and a lot of fun.

Ballyneal is just an awesome golf experience. Must play if you get the chance!

The Best Value in Golf

Simply put, Wild Horse is the best value in golf. Everything about the golf experience is perfect, and it's at a price that you would expect to potentially see lesser playing conditions and service.

I love everything about Wild Horse. First and foremost, it plays like a Links Course. Even after overnight rains, the golf course was very firm. I always find golf courses more interesting when the ball rolls and bounces rather than hitting and stopping.

The routing is nearly perfect. The course has a feel of Prairie Dunes. The holes flow nicely together, with food variability in terms of direction. We had a really calm day, so we didn't get to experience the full wind effect. But it was a blast to play nonetheless.

The green conditions were fantastic. They roll true and fast. There is significant slope to the greens but it's still very fair.

I can't recommend Wild Horse enough. It's a course everyone should play!

Great Ten Holes!

Frederick Peak is one of the best 9 (okay 10) hole golf courses I've played. This was an impromptu stop for me and my friends on a recent golf trip. I'm so thrilled we stopped because Frederick Peak is so unique that I'm not sure I'll play anything like it again.

The opening 4 holes are on the flat part of the course before holes 5-9 descend into, and then climb back out of the valley on the far side of the property. The 6th hole is one of the best par 5s I've played. From the back tees you play to a partially blind fairway and then can go for the green, which is a punch bowl design. Just a great hole!

Frederick Peak is a course all golf enthusiasts should play!

Big and Bold

The Dunes Course at The Prairie Club is massive in terms of its scale. From blowout waste areas the size of a football field, to greens that are 70+ yards in depth, everything about The Dunes Course is Big and Bold.

The Dunes Course opens with 3 really difficult holes, and then depending on the pin location, the 4th can be tricky as well. It's a much different start than The Pines Course where you ease into the round.

My favorite aspect of The Dunes is the ability to swing freely with the driver. With big fairways and lots of undulation, a golfer can hit some massive drives if the right slopes are hit.

The Prairie Club is a fantastic golf resort, and the Dunes Course is such a good part of it. Really fun to play.
