Theydon Bois Golf Club
Played On 12/31/2020Too wet
I am well aware it has rained a lot over the past couple of weeks. Also, I enjoy a round of golf just as much as anyone and so would rather courses be open. But, when you turn up to a golf course that is open, one assumes it is in some sort of playable state (especially being charged £27 a round for an otherwise run of the mill pay and play course).
18 winter tees (mats), 3 temporary greens and one hole completely closed which my playing partner and I were completely unaware of until we arrived at said closed hole to find a green that had been dug up, no temporary green in sight and a blank "course information" board plonked on the tee/mat. Also, large parts of the course were pure mud, fit only for a drove of pigs.
Oh, and we also followed a 4-ball contrary to government covid-19 rules at the time of playing...
Hopefully it's pretty obvious to see why we felt the green fee didn't provide value for money. Having said this, the layout of the course is good with some interesting holes. I may consider returning when the weather is better, but let's hope keeping the course open in such wet conditions doesn't do lasting damage.
Colmworth & North Beds Golf Club
Played On 01/02/2017An enjoyable course
Enjoyed my round here, only gave it 3 star but would say it's a bit better than average. Overall the course layout was interesting, albeit there were a few boring "up and down" holes in there. The 12th is great hole. Also the raised tees and mini hedges at 150 yards out were nice features to give a bit more character to the course.
The fairways were in good condition given the time of year but tees and greens a little long, although not bad considering the time of year.
Lack of hole numbers/yards on the tee box was disappointing, but overall an enjoyable round at a nice course.
Wavendon Golf Academy - 18-hole Course
Played On 12/04/2016Cold and frosty round!
Unfortunately played the course on a cold frosty day and the greens were frozen, so my views may be somewhat distorted. However I thought the current 4 star rating is a little flattering for this course.
For a public course it is quite an interesting one and a nice layout. It is good value for money but I feel the course wasn't in great condition (excluding frozen greens) and whilst there are some good holes, there were quite a few "nothing" holes.
The Millbrook Golf Club
Played On 11/19/2016Good value for money
Played on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of November, for the time of year the fairways were in great shape. However, the tees and greens were a little scruffy. Although I managed not to find one the bunkers looked in excellent condition and were well presented.
The layout of the course was interesting, albeit the holes did feel a little congested, with 3 double greens. The course is hilly (very hilly in some areas!) which does add to the challenge of the course.
Also, personally I am not a fan of a course being par 74 (especially when the SS was 4 shots lower from the yellow tees). There are 3/4 reachable par 4s, with 1 par 4 being only 220 yards off the tee with no real hazards preventing driving the green in 1 - which I think is a little silly.
In conclusion, good value for money and an interesting course, although the 4.5/5 star rating is a bit flattering in my opinion.
