Great Layout, Not what it Could be

The course is designed by Gary Kern, so it is a solid layout. When I first played this course 8-10 years ago, it was one of my favorites! The greens were fast and the bunkers well maintained. Over time, the greens have become softer and slower. The bunkers are not being maintained with the same sand they had when the course was new. I would rather pay $5-10 more per round to play the course as it used to be. As it is, for $20, I am not complaining. It is just that the course could be so much better. From the blue tees, this course is a challenge for all but tour quality players. Beautiful scenery and the management is doing a great job at keeping the pace of play reasonable.

Decent Course

I play here every year when I vacation in Michigan. This is not an upscale championship course, but it is a good value and a moderate test of golf given the wind and layout. The greens were a little brown in spots, which is unusual as they are usually perfect. Greens were hard and approach shots were bouncing 3-6 feet on initial landing. Had to play accordingly. The layout is that of a typical club course, not too long, but not too short either. A good challenge, and when priced right a good value. Some of the holes have water in play on the tee shot, which demands strategic club selection off the tee.

Decent Course Layout, Fairways Burnt, Greens Great

As for layout, there is variety. The course has plenty of length, and a mix of difficult versus moderate holes. The fairways were not watered and were hard pan or very thin grass. The greens were in great shape and very consistent. I liked the course layout as it had bail out areas and allowed the golfer to choose where to miss to take danger out of play. If fairways had been in a little better shape, I would have rated this course higher. As it is, this is a playable course and when priced under $35 a decent value. I would not consider this course a must play, but a decent place to play.

Could be Better

Great layout and challenging from the back two sets of tees. The bunkers were nothing but dirt (and ROCKS). No sand. Greens were good, but the hackers who play here can't figure out how to fix a pitch mark. As usual, the pace of play became slow once I caught up with the groups in front of me. Some of the holes are easy, but there are some very good golf holes on this course. They need to raise the price to keep the hackers away, put some sand in the bunkers, keep the greens cut fast, and this would be a solid course.

When Nothing Else is Available

A pitch and Putt, fairly wide open. OK for beginners, not much to write about for regular golfers. Course is OK, range balls are beat up, practice putting green is tiny and slow. Staff is very friendly, I only play here when I have no other convenient options.

Good Course, Watch for Specials

A drive from St. Charles, but a solid course design. I had a Golf Now coupon that made it more of a value since I normally will not pay a $45 greens fee. This course makes the golfer shape the tee shot to navigate most of the par 4's. Greens were in great shape, just a little on the slow side. The only negative was that the bunkers were really baked dirt, not sand. Otherwise, from the appropriate set of tees, this is a solid test of golf for all but the elite players as it is only modest in length.

Great layout, nice course. Good value when priced under $30. Greens were marked due to use, but they were rolling well. Course is solid and has a lot of variety. One of the better public courses around st. louis.

Decent, if you live in the area

Course conditioning and greens were fine. The layout is a bit quirky. There are too many short doglegs where the golfer has to hit a mid or long (maybe) iron off the tee just to keep the ball in play. People were friendly and some of the holes were solid. I just would not call this a memorable layout or one that I would drive 40 miles to play.

OK Course

I prefer to play this course's sister course Champion Hill for the same price. The layout is a bit quirky, and mainly the greens are like playing putt putt courses, so hilly and sloped. This course has some decent holes, but just not memorable. Conditioning is fine.

Decent Course

Best value at twilight rate, otherwise a little over priced. Difficulty of course depends on what tee you play. The back tees can give you some longer carries. I like most of the course, however I despise hole 15, a little par 3, that plays severely downhill (so downhill the shot can be blind) to a small double tiered green where you either hit a fabulous shot for a birdie putt, or you are scrambling trying to save par. There is no in between. This course has very good greens, I just do not like the layout of holes 15 and 18.

Could be a Terrific Course with some Changes

The front nine is goofy, up and down, sort of a makeshift layout. The first seven holes are amateur architecture. Holes 8 and 9 are decent and the back nine is a great layout (Gary Kern design). If they strengthened the first seven holes, this would be a fantastic layout in the countryside. Greens were not perfect, but consistent and acceptable for a public golf course and the money I paid, certainly would not throw rocks at the geens. The fairways are not mown close enough and the ball pretty much stops where it carries on the tee shot, not much roll. It had rained hard as there was still water in most of the bunkers. Some bunkers have not been maintained. If the back nine were like the front nine, I would probably not make the drive again. However, I would consider playing here again for the right price. The last 11 holes make this course a golf course.

Decent Course, Solid Layout, Greens were OK, not the best.

Lots of variety, a solid layout with length and finesse holes. Conditioning was not the best I have seen, but I won't argue for the price I paid as a Hot Deal on Golf now. Bunkers were really just raked dirt, they certainly were not sand. Greens were slow and a little ragged in spots. But they were consistent in speed. Driving range was a cow pasture, no grass to speak of. All that being said, the layout makes the course. You will hit every club in the bag, and need to manage the course to score well.

Tough Golf Course, Needs TLC

For 17.50, the course is OK, but I'd rather pay a little more for better conditioning. The tee boxes and fairways were zoysia and in good shape, they just need to be mowed. The recent rains may have kept them from doing that, but it looks like this had been the case for a longer time period. Course is long and tough enough without grass that yields no roll. Greens were very decent, slightly slow, but in good shape. Bunkers had not been raked or groomed for some time. They might as well take them out if they are not going to maintain the sand. Mosquitoes around the creek, so bring bug spray. Course is tough, so tee selection is a prime factor here. The rough is all crabgrass and there were some bare landing zones in front of the greens. Obviously, this course has a tight maintenance budget. For the price I can't criticize too much, but if the quality of the layout were matched by conditioning, this course would be a must play for public golfers. I would have rated this course much higher had there been some attempt to rake the bunkers, and control the crabgrass just off the fringe.

Moderate Difficulty but Fast Greens

Pricey unless you play non-premium tee times. IMO course is not worth the premium Saturday morning rate. That being said, the course is set up to give everyone a chance to play. Almost all of the greens are open for links style golf shots. The greens are spacious, and usually some of the best in St Louis public golf. They can sometimes get real fast and therein lies the challenge of the course. To score well, the golfer must have a solid short game to save strokes around these greens.

Decent Layout, Poor Conditioning, Slow Greens

A Gary Kern Design, I like most of the holes. I would redesign 3-4 of the holes and get rid of the silly Par 6 they think is such a novelty. It is actually pointless since you have to land your ball only 50-75 yards in front of the tees that used to be a par 5, so now you are playing a par 5 from the deck instead of driver off the tee. They are trying to get Zoysia started on some of the holes which will help since the fairways lack decent grass turf. The tee boxes are worse and really should be sodded with Zoysia. A decent layout but it is obvious they have no money to spend on course maintenance. A good place to take young kids to play and learn the game, but not a memorable golf experience for regulars. Pretty vistas, with some work this course could be a solid venue.

Thank you so much for your feedback on our course. We have received a lot of positive feedback since we’ve purchased the course in 2005. You are correct in that it is a Gary Kern design, and yes, Gary was involved in transforming Hole #5 to a Par 6. He really liked adding the distance to play 720 yards and the primary landing area being between 200-250 from the back tees. Shorter hitters can land it short now that we have piped in the first creek. We installed the two fairway bunkers on the right and replaced the irrigation heads throughout the entire hole. It can be a very difficult tee shot when hitting downhill with OB to the left of the entire hole and woods to the right. Most people have trouble placing their tee shot in the area that you mention. Zoysia was striped in back in 2008 on all the Par 4’s and Par 5’s on the front nine. They are now 100% zoysia. The back 9 has large zoysia circles that continue to grow around the sprinkler heads that will eventually take over the entire fairways. This was started back in the 90’s. The tee boxes are mostly bluegrass and can have a little trouble with the extreme heat and heavy rains. We have spent a considerable amount of money on the course, but we also feel it’s important to offer affordable golf to this area. A few improvements you might not be aware of beside the zoysia conversion include a new irrigation pump station, new irrigation heads, completed cart paths on the front 9, doubled the size of the irrigation lake above the property to hold water for the main lake, new clubhouse, commercial well for drinking water, Par 6 re-design, and the clearing of over 100 trees and 20 acres through the course. Please try us again. The course is in great shape, the greens are rolling nice, and Sun Valley is a solid venue to test all levels of players.

Great Golf Course

A favorite golf course of mine when I vacation in Michigan. Beautiful scenery, combined with a solid golf course. This is a second shot golf course. Plenty of room off the tee, but in order to score, the ball has to be put in the correct position on the undulating greens. Careless putting will produce 3 putts as well. Green speeds are moderate, if they were fast this course would demand a terrific short game. The greens are sloped and you have to know them to manage them. I love this course. Beautiful vistas, wildlife, wildflowers, and great golf.

Value when priced right

Course layout from the right tees is sufficiently challenging. Greens are a bit too slow, especially after a rain. To be fair, it had rained hard for two days before the round, but the greens were like shag carpets. A good course to play when you can play it for $30 or less. Above $35, is stretching it.

Decent Layout-needs work

I have played here before but the greens were not their best. #3 was using a temporary green. Greens had been recently aerated (In August?-Why?) and a little shaggy. Layout is challenging even though 3-4 holes are sort of goofy. Pretty views. I breezed through the front nine, but back nine I had to wait on every tee. A decent course but greens were a slight disappointment.

Great Course but Poor Condition

Great layout and challenging from the correct set of tees. About 1/3 of the greens were burnt from heat and fungus. I would not play here anymore in 2015. And their practice green is gone, which suggest they have no money. Fairways were somewhat shaggy.

A great layout but suffering from proper management.

A good Value

Course is not long. For better players it actually takes the driver out of play on several holes. The front nine is all about tee ball placement not length. The back nine is longer and opens up a bit. Course was in decent shape although I prefer faster greens. This course is a decent layout. The pace of play was great on the front nine but slowed to a crawl on the back nine. Whoever designed the course likes forced carries over water. Two of the par 5's make one lay back off the tee, which I dislike. Many holes make one play target golf. However, in general this course is a good value.
