Will be back

For the most part in good condition for February. Exception is the bunkers which were dense and needed more sand or to be fluffed. Nice, varied layout. Will return if I can find a discount as it's a bit pricey for my blood and fairly remote.

Not a Grip-and-Rip Course

A number of reviews cite the fact that this is a challenging course and I would agree. If you bring your "A" game, you'll probably find it a worthwhile new experience. If not, you'll need plenty of extra golf balls. That's because the woods bordering virtually every hold are not easy to enter to find stray shots. They are thick with undergrowth. If you overshoot a few greens by just 5-10 yards (like I did with my fairly new clubs), you may be pulling yet another ball out of your bag. Due to the layout of the front nine, I didn't hit a driver until about the 6th or 7th hole. A few more holes were driveable on the back nine than on the front. For reference, I hit about average distance for a 40-year-old golfer. So if you like to hit your driver, you may want to use the professional tees (and suffer the consequences if you hit off-line). The condition of the fairways was largely good and the greens were very good. The sand in the bunkers was very different from one to another. Tee boxes were average. Staff was fairly friendly and accommodating.

Singles Not Respected Here

I have booked as a single four times over the past 18 months. I'm a very social person and purposely book tee times so I can join others rather than play alone. Two of the 4 times at this course, the group I was paired with made it clear they did not want anyone else joining their group. I thought folks in rural areas were supposed to be friendly.

This recent time, I commented to a staff member. The head pro overheard and began rationalizing saying that they don't usually book singles. When he learned I booked on GolfNow, he said THAT was the reason it was OK to bump me from my scheduled time as a single. But what if I booked as a twosome joining another twosome? Well THAT would not be OK, he said. The discussion lasted about 10 minutes with the Pro making up one rationalization after another as to why it's OK to bump singles. He even admitted that he was rationalizing.

It's clear. Singles are second class customers. Too bad. The course is decent. Just not welcoming. Unless you can bring in revenue from two players or more.

A Nice Change of Pace

This course is about 45 minutes away and I play it once every 4 or 5 months as I like the layout. Not a fancy place in terms of amenities but they do serve beer so thumbs up on that score. There was a beverage cart but that ended around 4pm - a little early for a summer afternoon. The fairways were in good condition. As good as I have seen them. The greens were in pretty good condition for a municipal course where some players can't be bothered to fix their ball marks. Greens were slick. Fairly fast but more break than I remember from previous rounds. Too many 3-putts for me but I appreciated the challenge. On a few holes long hitters might think they should have played from the tips. But there are a few holes with forced carries that some average, weekend golfers will find difficult but not impossible. This is a very worthy course to play. Give it a try.

Agree with others on current conditions

Have played here a number of times in the past. Read reviews here about poor conditions on one of the 9's on the course this Spring so called up pro shop to ask. Pro assured me all was fine - just that the relatively new bermuda grass was dormant but still "plenty of it". I told him I would write a review after playing so I hoped he was giving me the straight story. He assured me he was. So I booked a round there. Upon checking in, asked again regarding conditions on the course. Was assured it was in "good shape; just 30% dormant still".

We were very disappointed when we got to the Bermuda grass 9. Grass probably still 75% dormant (not 30%) but the real issue is that there was so little of it - just a hint of grass covering the dirt. I understand a golf course's need to renew their turf but I also demand that they be truthful to their customers about conditions. I don't mind saying I was angry - not a good mindset for playing golf.

I also had to call twice to the pro shop because of 3 groups on a hole (slow play). Despite that, never saw a marshal once.

Dear Golfer,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback from your round in 2015. I am happy to report the new fairways and tees on the East look awesome. Added to this, there have been many more renovated bunkers throughout the facility. The courses look great and if you would be interested in checking it out as my guest please contact Michael @ 410-255-7764 x 9.

Dear Golfer,
Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience playing Compass Pointe. While I don’t like reading negative reviews I am thankful you did so I can have a discussion with my team. If you have some time I would like to speak further about your experience. Regards, Mike 410-255-7764 x 9

Has Its Defenses

Greystone is a well-designed course with a lot of variety among its 18 holes although it did seem as though there were around three par-3's that were similar to one another - medium length shots over protected marsh areas to greens with a strong back to front slope.

This course is not a long one but it has its defenses. This is not a grip-it-and-rip-it course as hazards are strategically placed. On the day I played it most recently, the greens were super fast if you were putting down hill - each of us experienced several instances putting uphill, missing the hole, and finding the ball back at our feet. However, putting uphill, the grain really grabbed the ball. Lots of three-putts on our scorecards plus one or two four-putts.

A complaint I have is that the bunkers were not dressed well. A couple of the bunkers that I found myself in were steeply cupped at the bottom - nearly all shots to the bunker rolled down to the very bottom and an extremely steep and hard swing was necessary to get your sand wedge into the sand behind the ball and then under it. This made the deeper bunkers very very difficult to get out of.

This course also needs more distance markers.

All in all I like the course and will play it more often if I can find good discounts.
