Still trying and making progress!

I am a local and have played Forty Niner many times through the years in both good and bad conditions. This is really a gem of a course that keeps trying to reach bygone years. It has a great layout, beautiful views, a quality restaurant and is fun to play but is not in the greatest of shape. To the owners credit, you can tell they are trying to get it back. Overall the course was in average shape at best with many areas that were in need of attention. All the teeing areas were extremely thin and in need of water, while the areas around some of the greens looked as if they had not been mowed in several weeks, number 6 in particular. Several greens on the front side were extremely bumpy and in poor condition. Many of the fairways were thin, patchy and in poor condition. In fairness, you could tell that an effort has been made to bring the course back to what it was years ago. Two of the courses par 5's had just been reopened after being closed and playing as par 3's. One hole remains that way, number 7. The reopened holes were in okay shape. Having said all that, for the price I feel it is a better bargain that the city courses that charge more and are in a poorer condition overall in my opinion. City courses are being run by a management company, with I'm guessing, more resources than this course! I hope Forty Niner continues to make an effort and progress towards getting the course back to a better overall condition and sticks around in these tough times! It was well worth the greens fee I paid. Come play it, enjoy the course and the quality restaurant amenities after the round.

Thanks so much for your honest review of the course!! We truly are trying as hard as possible to recover from the mess we were left with. We appreciate your continued patronage, and look forward to providing better conditions soon. Please contact Casey at caseyp@fortyninercc.com for a special replay coupon, and come back in a week or so and you will see even greater improvement, and the course will be a little more cleaned up than the last time you played. Nice change of pace course!

I hadn't played this course in approximately 8-10 years, so I went on Golfnow to read reviews. Most were very good, so I took a chance and made a tee time. I was very pleased. The course was not in pristine condition by any means but the greens were an awesome challenge. They were at least a 11 on the Stimp meter. They are very receptive to high shots but took some getting used to speed and read wise for putting. Approach shots that were low raced by the hole. They were much different than the Bermuda greens most of us are used to. They had slope that was deceptive on some greens and others were more straight forward. I found myself playing more break than necessary on most. Speed and line were more critical than I remember. The overall condition of the course left a bit to be desired but for the time of the year I think it was reasonable. Fairways were in OK shape but were a bit ragged in places and areas around many of the greens were thin. Included in the tee time was a free lunch and we all expected it to be a dog and chips but they had a good selection of burgers and chicken from which to choose, we were all amazed and pleased. I recommend the Patty Melt! The staff were very friendly and helpful! Overall myself and my playing partners were all pleased. We will be back!

Good Value, Needs work

New owners have worked hard on making the course more playable but there are still many tight lies on the course. However you can see that the course has improved a good bit in the last year. It will take some more time and water to get it back in great shape due to the neglect the course received. It was still quite playable and overall a good value!

Good Course for the money.

Course is very narrow and if you're not hitting it straight here you can be in trouble. The course is in average shape with problems on many fairways, tee boxes and greens. This can be attributed to problems watering the course from last year. It appears management is trying to address the issues but the course definitely was not in A1 shape. They need to relook at how you get to the #1 tee box. The drive from the south course starting point is rather excessive and time consuming. This is something new since Canoa Hills and San Ignacio merged into the North and South courses. Worth the money to play though!
