A good NYC muni parkland course

This course is well laid out over a rolling slightly hilly property. It has good fairway movement and green complexes that provide for strategic options. Several blind spots and elevations provide interest. Many fairways are tree lined but are fairly wide. The greens have nice slope and mounds and are usually protected on one side by bunkers. The conditioning is fair but not great. The course is very walkable. This is a nice option for a casual round.

Not bad, but too one-dimensional

I'm rating this again as I played a normal (non-outing) round. The course isn't bad but it is just too one-dimensional and boring to get the third star. Every hole is straight. Every green is the same- basic sloping. Very few fairway bunkers. No turns, dog legs. No thinking about anything. It's ok if you want to hit some balls but nothing stands out.

Very good strategic course in Texas hill country

This is an enjoyable strategic course routed wonderfully through hill country. Very fair with great risk reward strategy options. Quite a few long bunkers parallel to fairways typical of Pete Dye. Nice fairway movement and angles. Very nice interesting greens. Misses lead to challenging but not punishing shots. Wind and elevation are factors. Need a cart. My favorite of the San Antonio and Austin area courses.

A good quirky course with a so-so front 9 and very good back 9

This is a good course, very well-conditioned, with some quirky/gimmicky features. It rolls through Texas hill country but the elevations are not severe. It has large, deep cavernous bunkers. Greens are fairly large but if you miss them anywhere you are punished. The front 9 is surprisingly fairly plain other than a few quirks like the shared green that wraps around a monstrous bunker. I played a couple of weeks before the Valero tournament so the greens were lightning fast. The back-9 makes good use of the topography and the streams to make a nice-looking course and to make you think through your shot selection.

Fun, strategic, memorable and scenic

This course is terrific. Lots of memorable holes for strategy and scenery. Playing over and through some of the rock wall formations was fun. The bunkers were in excellent shape. The course provides a good challenge without being penal. Not walkable due to distances between greens and tees and elevations. There are several blind shots sometimes depending on your positioning. Interesting greens. You do get some noise on a couple of holes from the roller coaster next door, but it sort of adds to the charm. This is one of my favorite courses in the San Antonio area.

A nice course that is enjoyable to play.

This is a very good course, and I was undecided whether to give it a 3 or a 4, but it just didn't have enough to be special or stand out for that extra star. There are a few very good memorable holes, especially off the rock formations and through streams. But otherwise, it is a nice, straightforward golf course. It plays through significant hills and valleys, with lots of elevations. Not walkable. It has nice framing of the greens and a nice variety of holes. Some fairways are tight but nothing too severe. The service from the hotel to the pro shop to the starter was excellent.

A solid layout and very nice course with terrific greens

I'll preface by saying that I played the course when the grass was dormant and all browned out. I liked it and would give it a solid 3-1/2 stars. I tried to picture the how the course would be in the warmer weather and evaluate it but maybe I would bump it to 4 stars if I played it in top condition.
The good- Nice rolling property. Good movement of the fairways. Nice setting of many of the holes. I really liked the greens. They were nicely shaped and had challenging slopes and contours without being severe or tricked up.
A few holes play alongside commercial buildings. Quite a few of the holes are basic hit your spot between fairway bunkers and not much thought involved. And the par-3s while all nice are repetitive (all drop-shots with similar distances).
This is a very good course that I enjoyed playing.

Very nice course, nice scenery, and tricky greens

The fairways off the tee shots are very wide so you can rip your driver. There are some interesting holes with fairway movement, angles, and cross-hazards of the natural terrain that require carries. The course plays through lots of housing and basically requires a cart for all the very long distances between greens and tees. The greens can be quite tricky with big slopes carrying your ball a long way after you land it on the green. There is a decent amount of water in play but lots of room to play away from it, and the course is fairly flat. The overall experience is good as the course is pretty, has some good movement and interesting greens (although a few are too severe), and is a fair test. The routing is a negative. I would probably give it 3-1/2 stars if possible.

Great course! Challenging but playable and fun.

The beauty of this course is how well-balanced it is. I was afraid it would be like other Florida courses-flat with lots of water that you can't miss. It was nothing like that. Lots of movement and the right amount of elevations and undulations. The fairways move left and right and the greens are outstanding. Some of the holes have a Carolina low-country feel, and others a manicured clean look. It is a fair challenge and you can play safely away from the water. Lots of bunkers running parallel the length of the fairways. Very walkable. I will say that having played Pebble Beach, that Sawgrass is not really worth the same price. But the overall experience was great.

Decent, basic course with interesting greens

The White course is a simple, straightforward, typical Robert Trent Jones course, with mostly straight fairways, fairway bunkers near landing areas, and pushed up, elevated big greens with high flashed large bunkers guarding. The course gets repetitive but the greens are very good, with subtle slopes and contours. The course is relatively flat and easy to walk. There is nothing special but it is a decent track for a casual round.

Very nice and scenic front 9, goofy back 9

I ended the round feeling positive but mixed about this course. The front 9 wraps around the lake very nicely, with good golf holes and very scenic views of the lake and the mountain. The back 9, which begins what seems like a mile away from the front, is much different. It plays inland in very hilly areas and is tighter. Some of the fairways seem to just be routed straight through major ups and downs of hills. There are many blind shots and some odd configurations. The greens were thick but nicely sloped so were interesting and fair. This course is definitely not walkable, with big elevations through fairways and very long green to tee distances.

Disjointed layout, nothing special

The clubhouse and the history are cool, but the course itself is quite basic with a very disjointed layout. The course is split into three sections with a parkway running through, which makes it a very difficult walk. There are a few nice holes in the middle and a couple at the end of the round with some big elevation changes. But mostly the holes are basically straight back and forth, with flat greens and tree-lined fairways.

The mecca of American golf. Amazing experience!

Can I give it 6 stars? This is golf heaven for anyone who loves the game. Unlike the experience on other ocean/bay side courses, playing out into the peninsula and back is extraordinary. The greens are small and beautifully sloped. The bunkers are deep. The layout is superb. Some criticize the inland holes, but I think that is silly criticism. The inland holes on the back 9 still give amazing elevated views of the bay, and you are playing along some stunning mansions. Among the inland holes, 14 and 16 are terrific, and 3 is very good. The others are all sound, enjoyable holes. the 4-10 stretch along the water, especially 6-9, are mind blowing. The only negative is the pace of play. Lots of waiting to hit your shots. The caddies were great, and this is one of the most incredible golf experiences you can have.

A decent course in a nice setting

This is a solid golf course but nothing special stands out, other than some great views. I liked it but these 5-star ratings seem way off to me. For a course located right on the ocean, there are very few holes where you see the water. The bunkering is well done with large bunkers protecting elevated greens and good green complexes. It has mostly straightforward fairways with a few on the back-9 that have some undulations and rolling terrain. The front is mostly flat. Walkable course. I met a bunch of fun locals playing and this is a casual "ready-golf" environment.

Great course in a stunningly beautiful setting

This is one of the most beautiful settings for golf you will see. Kauai and Hanalei Bay are stunning. The course makes great use of the setting, with holes at the bay with the mountains in the background and right at the ocean cliffs. The course is fun to play- great condition, tricky greens that can punish bad shots, nice variety and fairway movement. Many holes can be played multiple ways. The course is not walkable due to long treks between greens to tees, but otherwise the layout varies nicely through different parts of the property. Just a great experience.

Pretty course with a decent front 9 and great back 9

This is a top-notch resort course that really stands out on the water-side holes on the back-9. The front is decent with some good holes but nothing really stands out. The back-9 is much more interesting and striking. Kauai is gorgeous and several holes play along the water across from the backdrop of the hills and mountains. There is also a hole that is closer than I ever thought I would be to an airport runway (waving to the passengers as they landed while I was on the tee box was fun!). This used to be called the Lagoons Course. The course has a good number of forced carries and risk-reward features. The course is not walkable due to some steep elevations from greens to tees.

Fun golf in a great setting

I would give it 3-1/2 stars. This course is in the Saratoga State Park and it is a beautiful setting as you play through stately tall pine trees. Although a parkland course there is plenty of room to hit driver off the tee. The course is in good shape and I enjoyed the front nine in particular. It has a nice variety of par-4s and 5s and is easy to walk. The par-3s were all about the same length (mid-iron distance) and the back nine started to feel more routine, but still very enjoyable. The greens get marked up a bit but otherwise are interesting with slopes and contours. A very good course.

Fun challenging old-school course

This is a very enjoyable course in terrific condition. The bunkers were excellent. It has an old-school design with strategic thinking needed off the tee quite often. Nice variety, good slope on the greens, a nice mix of long, mid, and short holes, off-angle fairways, doglegs. In a few spots they take the tee boxes or greens right to the edge of an adjoining road, which can affect play a bit, but overall the experience was great.

Not the worst but leaves a lot to be desired

The course has a handful of decent, interesting holes, particularly on the back-9, but it just doesn't flow well. Too many holes feel like they just placed a tee and green with no thought as to how the hole plays or how to best route through the elevations. The routing is confusing as it it easy to get lost not knowing where the next hole is. It's also a short course with a large number of par-3s. It's too bad as the property had potential and there are a few cool holes, but overall the course is a letdown.

Very impressed- top notch course

The course is terrific in its variety, with holes playing in all different directions, off-angle fairways, elevations, doglegs, and strategic bunkering. Most holes give you risk-reward options and safe routes (except for one par-4 with a very long forced carry off the tee and no bail-out option). The fairway corridors are wide to allow driver off the tee on most holes. The rough is thick enough to affect your shot but not too deep that you can't play it. The greens are nicely sloped with good but fair contours that give challenging reads. The course is pretty, with great vistas of treetops as far as you can see and good use of fescue mounds. The one drawback that cuts the rating down for me is that the course is practically un-walkable due to long distances from greens to tees.
