Pace of play makes this course frustrating

I've taken advantage of two price specials to play this course now, and both times I've been unhappy with the result.

My most recent round took nearly 5.5 hours to finish. The previous time, we played 14 holes in 5 hours before it got dark. WHY does this course take so long? There are no rangers to enforce the pace of play. We waited on every shot the whole round.

To start off, the tee boxes are nicely maintained, and the fairways are very nice. Most are fairly wide, and if you play from the correct tee box, should have little trouble maintaining the pace of play. Even the rough isn't too bad. Stray too far, however, and you're in the native grasses, which you must keep the cart out of. The course has a nice mix of holes to hit driver and lay up with an iron. The sand traps I was in were nice - I was in several.

The greens, however, are atrocious. Read all of last year's reviews about the greens - they're still true. Your ball is airborne as much as it is rolling when you putt. The greens are pretty hard, too. I broke a ball mark repair tool on the 3rd or 4th green.

And you'll want to have exact change for the beverage cart. The girl I spoke to said "they don't want us to carry change." How convenient for her to make an additional tip on any single purchase.

I want to like this course, since it's the closest to me and has decent rates occasionally. But I have to devote most of a day to do so! And the greens need a lot of work.

Thank you for the feedback. We certainly feel the greens are in great shape. If you play late in the day which it looks like you did the POA does get bumpy as it grows at a faster pace then the bent grass. We have not seen an issue with hard greens as we have had a very wet spring. Happy to have you out again on us to check out the course. We think you will see it is in great shape. Please let us know.

Terrible greens and the slowest play on the front range

I've played this course twice now, taking advantage of golfnow deals. Each time has required more than 5 hours to play. Last summer, we only got through 14 holes before losing light - and that was 4.5 hours after starting. This most recent round took nearly 5.5 hours! I think I'm done, despite it being the closest course to me, and 30 bucks with a deal.

I like the layout of this course, and it should be a fun course to play. The starter says to play "contact golf", keeping in contact with the group ahead. But nobody patrols. And you will wait on every shot.

The fairways are nice, well kept. As are the tee boxes, mostly. The course isn't difficult if you can keep your drives in or near the fairways. Go too far left or right, however, and you'll be in the native grasses. Don't get the carts anywhere near them - they'll stop working. Getting out of the grasses is hit or miss - you could be sitting with a clean swing, or have a clump of grass interfering.

The greens are an entirely different story - they're still terrible (read every review from last summer). The ball was bouncing on several putts. Almost the entire length of the putt! And they're hard as a rock, already! I broke a plastic ball mark repair tool. Some of the greens fine, others had tons of ball marks.

Oh, and the beverage cart doesn't carry coins for change, according to the girl I spoke to. How convenient for them - an extra 50 cents on any single beverage purchase. Don't think they didn't plan that on purpose.

You're better off spending more to golf somewhere else. These guys are clearly in it just to take your money.

Beautiful course and scenery, playable fairways and rough

We played this course when we stayed at a nearby resort. The resort membership included a discounted price, so it was only about $140 per person - check with your resort. This was my first non-US course, but it was recommended by our driver and concierge... No drinks or food were included in the price, but a cart was.

The course is beautiful, and I liked the cenotes on several of the holes. The two shortest par-3s are aimed directly into the ocean, so think about your club selection if you hit a high ball. Surprisingly, even hitting into the trees resulted in a findable ball - I think they're so think your ball stops quickly. Just be careful of the alligators. :)

The course fairways were very nice, but the greens were very hard. Stopping a ball from a long distance out was not happening. The greens were fast, and pin placements fairly difficult. The sand traps were pretty hard sand, but in good condition. Chipping and short game were my downfall - the ground around the greens seemed pretty hard as well, and getting under the ball was difficult. And it had been three months since my last round...

I'd play this course again - but there are several others in the area I'm going to try first - just have to wait until the next Riveria Maya vacation.

Which resort did you stay at? I'm travelling there in May 2107 and my resort does not offer any deals on the $299 US Price... :(

Decent course with lots of undulations

This is a fun course with hardly any flat lies. I spent the whole round with my ball either above my feet or below my feet, even when I was in the fairway.

The greens are in ok shape. Lots of ball marks, as it seems most people don't bother to repair their ball marks. The greens are nice and soft, however. Some of the pin positions are pretty challenging, with significant sloping right around the hole.

The fairways are a little rough. It felt like about half of my "fairway" shots were still pretty tight lies. The grass wasn't in that great of shape, but just 15 feet around me the fairway grass was great. I liked the mix of "grip it and rip it" holes with "land it here" holes. Lots of fairway bunkers to avoid or carry. Yeah, I spent a good portion of my day in the sand.

The pace of play was very good, we finished 18 in just over 4 hours. I would definitely play here again.

Nice course with narrow fairways, consistent greens

This was a nice course, in good shape, and with very consistent (although very fast) greens. The pin positions were quite difficult, with only a few feet to the edge of the green on most of them. The greens were VERY fast. Downhill puts were scary - missing the cup meant a good distance back uphill.

The fairways are mostly narrow, and close together. You'll probably end up waiting for someone else to play out of your fairway at some point. But it was overall a pleasant experience. Most of the holes are straight, and the dogleg holes were easy to drive through the landing zones. The rough wasn't so rough you couldn't hit out, so it wasn't really damaging to your score.

Fun course, excellent personality

This is a neat course that is going to be terrific in a few years as it matures. The holes are laid out nicely, with some challenges and some relief. The rough is thick, so you'll be penalized by missing the fairway, but not so thick that you can't find your errant shots. Some of the greens have terrific undulations, giving you some eventful putts if your approach isn't stellar.

The personality of this course is what makes it a lot of fun - the course guide is truly humorous, and the staff are very helpful and true to the fun atmosphere starting with a visit to their website.

The island greens make for some fun approaches. My only complaint was that the greens were very sandy - but we may have played shortly after some treatment had been applied, so I'm willing to let that go. The rental clubs used in my group were in good condition. The pace of play was good - just over 4 hours for 18 holes.

I enjoyed this course, as did my parents and brother--in-law (30+ handicaps).

Nice course, rude ranger

This is a nice mountain course, with fairly narrow fairways, but mostly straight holes. Beautiful scenery, but they won't let you pause to take it in... The pro-shop staff was nice, asking where we were from, etc., and thanking us for visiting. Same with the starter.

The ranger, however, was extremely rude. On the 8th green, he rudely told our foursome that we must pick up the pace of play, since we had fallen behind the twosome in front of us. We tried to protest that we can't keep up with a twosome, and we weren't holding up anyone behind us, but were cut off, and he insisted "that's the way we play here, you keep up with the group in front of you" and he drove off. Never mind the fact that we were UNDER the pace of play expectations that are printed on the scorecard. We finished the front in 1:45. Then we caught up to a threesome at 12, and were waiting for them the rest of the round. No ranger appeared to tell them to pick it up.

I won't golf here again with ridiculous pace of pay expectations like that, coupled with a very rude ranger. It ruined an otherwise fun outing. Don't golf here if you think you might have to look for a lost ball every once in a while.
