Tangle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2020Great layout, good value, but could improve
First time playing; clubhouse staff was a little unfriendly and seemed annoyed with the 1-2 questions I had. They had run out of range balls at 4:00 in the afternoon and had no desire to retrieve them. Really enjoyed the course, it’s in great shape! Pace of play wasn’t great, they really could have used a ranger out there to move things along. No reason we should’ve been waiting that long on some holes. It’s a bit of a drive from downtown Dallas, not sure if it was worth the hour commute there and back.

Course has great contouring and natural features, but is in awful shape. Very sparse “alive” patches of grass, ground is hard as a rock and filled with weeds, and the growth is past the point of repair regarding a difference between fairway and rough. Greens were so fast that some pins were completely unfair; the ball has nowhere to stop anywhere around the hole and you’re left with at least a 12 footer no matter where you putt/chip from. Overall, I’m sure this course looked great a number of years ago, but that time has clearly passed.

Course was in fantastic shape! Absolutely gorgeous piece of land that only looked better with the trees changing colors. Highly challenging and undulating layout that places premiums on the second shot. Most holes have relatively wide fairways that favor long hitters, but well-placed hazards often create tough decisions on the tee. Six different tee boxes are a major plus. My only complaint is that the practice facilities could use some updating. The best part of a round played here earlier this year was the owner pulling up to our group in a cart, thanking us for coming out, and telling us about the family's history with the course that bear's their name and the pride they take in owning it again. It was really cool to see them personally cultivate their customer base again and laying out plans to restore the course to it's former glory. I'll definitely be back with friends, but will continue to selfishly hope the course remains a hidden gem for a while longer.
