Newcastle United Golf Club
Played On 07/12/2019Good but not as good as it could be
The quality of golf course is aligned to its footballing namesake, good, but not great, whether intentional or not it’s a pretty good analogy. It’s good, don’t get me wrong it’s a good course, but with a bit of investment it could be outstanding.
I played this morning a good welcome in the clubhouse and a couple of tips before I headed off, I was able to start a bit earlier that planned and this was great.
On to the course and fundamentally it needed a good mow. On most holes it was difficult to identify the fairway from the first cut and there was plenty of clover, however, this wasn’t too off putting especially on the back nine as it looked like the greenskeepers had been out and there was more definition and less clover. Where the grass has been mown, the second challenge arises, this is the significant ridging on the course with leads to the peaks being devoid of grass whilst the troughs are luscious. The greens were slow, very slow but consistent, however, I do think they could be better. All in all the course does need a bit of investment to get it so looking spectacular and playing like a really high quality course.
I know that sounds a bit moany, but it’s not. I paid £15 to play and that represented pretty good vfm. The course is well laid out, it’s challenging but wide enough for the higher handicapper, the course was well drained and it was easy to navigate around. The scallies mentioned in other reviews were no where to be seen (probably too early for them) but there were no rakes in the bunkers which meant I probably left someone later on with a couple of challenging lies!
Unfortunately the clubhouse was closed (closed Mon, Wed and Fri) at the end of my round so I didn’t get to enjoy any of the hospitality mentioned in the course overview.
All in all it was a good course, but one that could be amazing.
Collingtree Park Golf Club
Played On 07/09/2019Brilliant, but he straight!
I’d been wanting to play this corse for some time and I took the opportunity to do it on a slightly overcast day. I arrived early but this wasn’t a problem as the course was quiet and the pro just said I could head off when I was ready. The course was quiet but I did catch up a two ball who let me play through immediately so I was pretty chuffed with the pace of play.
The course has a wonderful layout, it reminded me of playing in Portugal as the course winds it’s way through a vast array of stunning houses and has plenty of well established trees including some massive pines to align the route. Every hole was good by 4-13 was phenomenal run of testing well payed out holes. The only thing I would say is that the greens are a bit of a work in progress a couple of them are pretty shoddy, but they are consistent and that is something.
Based on this I’d say the course represents bey good value for money and the facilities look fantastic, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to stay to enjoy them.
If you’re in the area it’s certainly worth stopping at Collingtree, just make sure you hit the ball straight out you’ll be in a garden, the water or worse a window!
Aberfoyle Golf Club
Played On 06/22/2019Lovely Course, Really lovely people
Let’s start with the course, it’s a short course, but don’t let that put you off. If your used to some 6200+ yrd modern course then give this a go, much more akin to traditional golf. All the holes are a challenge, for example the first looks simple but a blind second shot and wickedly quick green Make it tricky and so it continues, whilst many holes reminiscent of modern parkland courses there are some that will mess with your heed! The 4th, 10th, 15th and 16th, in particular.. I played on a warm summers day, the greens were in good condition, they are mossy, but we’re quick, true and have a few wicked angles. The fairways were lush and bouncy. The deep rough though is deep, the ferns above your waist put pay to searching for the ball beefier you even consider the wee beasties that may be lurking within! So all in all the course is good and should pose a challenge to most
The thing I really want to comment on if the hospitality, the lady who ran the clubhouse was amazing: I rocked up mid Saturday afternoon, no problem squeezing me in. Can my boy walk round with me? No problem, and she also gave him a club so he could have a hit too! Can my wife walk round with the bairn in the buggy? No problem! I do not think I’ve ever been more welcomed!!! My wife had an excellent scone and tea in the clubhouse whilst I completed the back nine and at the end I was gutted I didn’t have the chance to get one myself as we had to rush off
This was one the best golf experiences I’ve had and I would recommend Aberfoyle GC to anyone!!!
Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club
Played On 06/15/2019The Gem of the North
Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the real gems of the north, from the challenge to to faculties, it’s just one of those courses that if it were in another part of the UK would be extortionate and packed, but here you get a great round for a good price on a course with true greens and spectacular views.
I played on a Saturday morning, I wanted to tee off early and booked a 07:40 tee time, however I was really early and the four members who were shooting off at 07:00 said: don’t hang around waiting if the tee is free crack on! I let them get away, but finally caught them up at the 6th where they immediately let me play though and I raced round the rest of the course, well as much as you can as you have to take in the vista of every shot.
Clearly the 13th is the signature hole, but they are all fantastic. My only minor gripe is the rough, it’s savage, on some of the holes it is a case of: fairway, first cut, two foot grass and you lose your ball, even if it just rolls in, please just give the edges of that sawgrass a trim!
The clubhouse is nice and has a great mix of golfers, walkers and beach goers.
I thoroughly recommend this course, for me one of the best in the UK!
South Moor Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2019Little Gem that is worth a visit
I thoroughly enjoyed my round at South Moor. I was looking for somewhere new to play and just picked the course at random. What a good choice I made:
Teeing off at 11:30 the course was quiet, when I did eventually catch a members four ball they let me play through immediately and we’re really nice, even when I duffed my tee shot right in front of them :(
The course was in really good condition, the greens were quite hard and it was difficult to get the ball to stop occasionally, but I’m not going to let that be a negative, it just requires a different style of play. The course is compact, but you’re not falling over other people, it is built of a hill though so shots on approximately half the holes run with the slope, some significantly.
The clubhouse was fantastic, the staff friendly and I really enjoyed my round. The only things I would do to improve the course are:
- 100 yard markers / stakes
- Notices to tell people on the tees when they should wait for a bell
- A course / yardage book. Not only for info but also as a souvenir of playing the course and it’s interesting history
- A sign behind the pro shop telling you that isn’t the main car park!
I’ll definitely be back to South Moor
Arcot Hall Golf Club
Played On 05/22/2019Great Compact Course
Really enjoyed my round at Arcot Hall. It was a course I’d wanted to play for a while and it didn’t disappoint. The course was in good condition: The greens were excellent, however, there were some parts of the fairways that were a bit short on grass. It is quite a tight course that makes for a good challenge. It is quite compact so your quite often putting in direct view of another tee, but this wasn’t a problem as the course was relatively quiet. The members were friendly and I felt welcome on the course. I will go back.
