Another Beautiful Day at The Rock

What more to say about Oak Quarry than what's already been said? Absolutely in my Top 3 in Southern California and potentially number 1 depending on how windy it is.

Today's round ... barely any wind at all, so yeah ... my favorite course today.

The Commemorative Layout (traditional #17 becomes #1, #16 becomes #18 - otherwise, same route) was a fun change. Course conditions were great as usual, the new carts are super fly - like the Bentley of golf carts! Staff friendly and helpful as always.

The only down side - as always - is driving back to LA after the round. But playing Oak Quarry is always worth it. Can't wait for my next round!

Outstanding

Wow, what an incredibly fun Sunday of golf at Destroyer. My first time playing there but I was fortunate to have a buddy with me who knew the course well - which definitely helped!

The conditions of the course were outstanding from tee to green. Lush fairways, rough that will (slightly) punish you and really, really true (and big) greens. The layout was fun and challenging with some really lengthy holes from the tips. Wind was definitely in play; especially on the couple of long par 5s ... which both were playing INTO it. 570 is a LONG WAY into strong wind!

I've heard play can be slow but it absolutely wasn't today - we got through 18 pretty quick.

The clubhouse is beautiful with a great little pro shop, friendly and helpful staff and some great food at really reasonable prices.

This is definitely one of my favorite courses in Southern California and I'll certainly be back.

Not Bad

I've played Hondo several times and it's an enjoyable round. The layout isn't particularly challenging but it's pretty tightly put together so if you're prone to losing drives, you'll almost certainly be in someone else's fairway. The greens are a moderate pace and true for the most part. Condition is usually pretty ok - not outstanding but good enough - though my most recent round; the fairways were pretty dormant with not much for the ball to sit on. Since I've played here several times before and the conditions were much better; I'll just chalk that up to it having been pretty early in the season. And it WAS a cold winter for LA with a lot of rain.

Pace can get slow but not excruciatingly so in my experience.

Not a bad spot to play.

Home Base

Oh, The Chester.

It's my GHIN home course but that's really because it's 10 minutes from my house and it's my go-to for a practice session - mainly at the range and practice facilities which are, actually, pretty nice. A full range with a lot of stations but they CAN fill up when the weather's nice. Bunker work and chipping work, you can get in for a nominal fee.

The course itself is a decent executive course. There's one par 5 on the back but it's mostly 3's and short 4s. Which, for a practice facility, is quite perfect. It lets you make of it what you want and that's why I do quite like it. Most of the 4s are long enough you CAN tee off with a driver ... or you can tee off with a 3 ... or a 5 ... or an 8. And work on a lot of aspects of your game. This is why I give the layout a 4 out of 5 stars. It's a great facility to work while enjoying a round.

Course conditions vary. Last time I went out for a quick 9, the fairways were kind of dead but the greens were good enough and so were the bunkers. But I've played it enough that I know it's been better. Never write-home-about-it but good enough.

The staff has always been friendly, the pros I've chatted with have been great folks and it's just a generally enjoyable environment that seems to be full of people that love the game. I don't mind calling it my "home" course at all.
