Petrifying Springs Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2020Great Municipal Course
Petrifying Springs is a great course as a public, county-run course for the money. The layout itself is fairly easy (a lot of straight or nearly straight fairways with elevation change on some holes) so its not too difficult, but provides enough to make it interesting for intermediate players. The greens are well maintained but can vary on speed from more moderate speed (for a municipal course, slow for a non-municipal course) to slow (very slow for a non-municipal course) but this also makes it putting-accessible for beginners through intermediate players. Fairways are maintained very well, and while there is beautiful foliage and trees (especially in the fall) the course still plays open where you can make good recovery shots when you don't stripe it down the middle. Staff is very friendly as well. Pace of play isn't too much of an issue but don't expect a 3 hour round on the weekend. Price is middle of the road.; not obnoxious, not the best deal out there.
Personal love for the course: where I hit my first birdie ever (hole 18) and where I first shot under 100 (91!).
