The Club at Starr Pass - Rattler/Coyote
Played On 07/21/2020Bring water!
There are some recent reviews about the conditions that had me 2nd guessing my reservation.
Greens were in excellent shape. The recent rain has done them well. Bring your divot tool, you'll need it. I've never seen balls spin back so much in the Az summer!
Fairways were pretty decent but there were some dry spots. Nowhere like some of the reviews make it sound though. Plenty of grass and rough. Bunkers still fluffy.
All that said, as expected you still need to hit shots. This is possibly the most unforgiving course in Tucson.
Covid protocals suck. I confirmed that an extra cart will cost you $25 even if you don't know the person youre playing with. Youre a 1 and book with a random 1? You ride together.
Seems like the only precaution they've taken is even more idiotic. NO WATER on the course and NO BEVERAGE CART. Were talking 110* heat and the towers where they keep the 5 gallon jugs were empty.
Quarry Pines Golf Club
Played On 07/16/2020Not quite what it used to be
I'm going to preface this review by saying I paid $16 for 18. Value is tremendous.
That said, QP used to be my favorite course several years ago. I recently got back into things and was excited to get back to my home turf. Sadly, its gone a bit down hill. There were a few holes on the front that you're better off in the rough. They were hard pan dirt. The pro about this though is that the ball seemingly rolls forever. Luckily for you duffers, your top is likely to roll out to tour distances because of it.
Warm up before you get here. The driving range is closed and by the looks of it, likely permanently as they're building apartments here.
Greens seemed a bit slow, but stayed consistent through 18 and there was grass. A benefit compared to other courses around town in the summer.
Speaking of summer, there was NO water out and NO beverage cart. It was 111 degrees when I played. I cannot stress this enough: BRING YOUR OWN WATER!! You're far from ambulance services. I don't want to see any of you in heat stroke in the middle of the fairways. BRING YOUR OWN WATER.
All that to say, especially at $16, it's still Tucson's most fun course. Very technical, lots of elevation changes and some of the views are amazing. Bring a few extra balls, you'll need them.
Lastly, BRING YOUR OWN WATER
Tubac Golf Resort - Rancho/Otero
Played On 07/12/2020I just bet McCord and Mickelson that your caddie could knock it on from here
Other than picking the literal hottest day of the year (and probably most humid) I had a blast playing here my first time. If you're lucky enough to play the Rancho side, look for signs along the way that have some famous scenes from "Tin Cup." Easily one of, if not the MOST beautiful course in Southern Az. With all the green and trees around, it really doesnt feel like Az at all.
Key tip: spend the couple bucks and pick up a yardage book in the pro shop (and an extra dozen). Aside from being the most beautiful, its possibly also the most unforgiving. The thick trees and bushes eat balls alive.
Thank you for your 5 star review. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again soon.
