Neglected, but there might be hope....

This was my first trip out to Lake Wilderness. We had 2 foursomes and we teed off early, around 7:00am. The weather was overcast with some misting.

My initial reaction was that this course must be congested as there were about 20 people lingering around the tee box on the first hole. I was right. We had to wait to tee off on most of the holes on the front nine. I think some of the groups ahead of us were only playing nine as the pace did quicken up on the back. My suggestion would be to space the tee times out a few more minutes. Also, with not having a driving range, there's really not many places for on deck golfers to hang out.

As for the course... the layout is pretty interesting. It was definitely challenging. For what this course lacks in distance it makes up for with tight fairways and difficult pin placements. There was a decent amount of sand and water but it never really seemed to be very threatening.

The condition was HORRIBLE. The only thing they were watering were the tee boxes and the putting greens. The fairways were mostly dirt with a little bit of dead grass sprinkled on top. You have to be really good at picking the ball clean to play here. Also, you need to add 30 yards to your drives because the ball rolls forever. There were divots all over the place and they did not provide sand/seed on any of the carts. It's almost as if they just don't care. We are in the middle of a drought but this was just ridiculous. On the other hand, the greens were lush and QUICK. They over-watered the greens as well. At least 3 of them had large size puddles in the middle.

As to the facilities, can't really say... They didn't serve food until 11 and we never saw the cart girl.

What this course does have going for it is very reasonable green fees and an interesting and challenging (although short) layout. I may actually give it another whirl mid-fall or next spring.

Congestion in the city

This was my first time playing at Jefferson Park. It might be my last... at least on a weekend. It was the slowest round I've ever played, clocking in at just under 6 hours. I also had difficulty making a tee time. I called early in the morning 2 weeks prior to the tee time and there were very few openings.

Other than that, the course was so-so. The layout was boring on the front 9 and only got a little better on the back. The condition was average for a municipal course. I thought it was a little overpriced. The driving range is new and it was very nice. The mats were in good shape and it's looking straight at the Seattle skyline.

The best part about this course is the convenient location. But next time I think I'd spend a little more time driving for a more interesting course (and hopefully less congested).

A great find in the South Sound

This was my first trip out to the Classic. I'd heard a lot about it from the locals since I moved to Tacoma. All the rumors were true. This course was fantastic. It was beautiful, well kept, played at a good pace and an overall good value.

I heard about how many trees there were and how narrow the fairways were... not the case. Apparently when I played it was shortly after the course had gone through a MAJOR tree removal. I could still see the stumps and mounds of woodchips. I was paired with a threesome that had all experienced the course several times and the general consensus was that while the tree removal was major it was done tastefully and did not subtract from the beauty of the course. They said it is somewhat more forgiving now, but still on the challenging side.

The layout was very interesting with plenty of sand, water and a good amount of undulation. The greens were well kept and the pins were well guarded. There were houses on the course but they didn't encroach too much.

We teed off early and it was a week day, but the pace of play was excellent. We clocked in at just under four hours.

Overall I would recommend this course to anybody. Even if you're not local, it's worth the drive. I'm even considering joining the RMG club and making this my home course.
