Magnolia/Dogwood at Brunswick Plantation & Golf Links
Played On 06/29/2023The epitome of beach golf
From the moment you drive up to the club house, this place feels special. It’s like the Calabash version of Magnolia Lane. Surprisingly, the course matches up with its introduction.
Plush grass from tee to green, thick, challenging rough, open fairways and greens, and strategically placed bunkers. Beautiful water features on most holes that are there for more for scenery than strategy.
Layout wise, this course looks easy. Most the fairways are wide and accessible and most of the challenge off the tee comes in the form of dog legs. No forced carries over water or sand. It’s fairly short in places too, but that’s where it gets you. You can’t cut any of the dog legs, and long hitters will consistently find themselves hitting through the fairway into a welcoming sand trap. Hole #1 on Magnolia is a great example. Hit the 3-wood.
So here’s the tips: if you consistently drive the ball over 260, you should likely play the blues, and even then, hit your three wood off most tees and hybrid off a few. Don’t try to cut the corners. I cannot stress this enough. It looks doable—it is not, and more important, it’s not rewarding on your next shot. Take what the course gives you off the tee and you’ll consistently find yourself with an 8 or 9-iron into most greens. For real. This course punishes greediness.
Overall, this course is a must play if you’re in the Sunset/Calabash area. Best value too. If this course were in Atlanta (where I usually play), it would cost $100 and there would never be an open tee time.
For reference, I’m a 5.5 handicap that plays once a week. I played the blues at 7:00am with minimal wind.
Southland Golf & Country Club
Played On 11/18/2019Grumpy Pro Shop, Just OK Course, Good Greens
I’ve played Southland maybe 100 times. Greens are as green and full as they’ve ever been. Very soft and receptive. Also very slow though and kind of furry in places.
Fairways are OK. Three or four tee boxes make you choose between hitting out of dirt or hitting out of rough.
The worst thing about this place though is the grumpy pro shop. It doesn’t cost anything to be nice. This dude gave me a lecture because I put my clubs on the “wrong” cart. He also got super defensive and almost mad when I asked for a cart key, I imagine because he thought I wanted to go out early because he grumbled my tee time at me. I was the only person there.
This might be a great place to bring a kid to learn the game, but just tell the little ones to meet you around back.
Heritage Golf Links - Legacy Nine
Played On 06/07/2019Mowed the greens!
Heritage almost always has great fairways and usually good tee boxes, but the greens can sometimes be a little furry and a little bumpy. It’s still early enough in the season where the ball marks aren’t an issue and they mowed the greens today. Still a little slow, but they were fast enough and rolled true. Had a ton of rain early this morning too but drainage was great and I only had to move maybe one ball. The course is in great shape. Difficult as always.
Heritage, if you see this, I’m begging you, send someone out once a day to just repair ball marks. Other golfers, take a minute to repair two or three marks each hole. Summer is coming. Keep em smooth.
Cherokee Run Golf Club

The course is in amazing shape. Nothing more to it. One of the top five courses within 30 miles of Atalanta, easily.
Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club - Sand Nine
Played On 06/15/2018Great experience at a kind of underwhelming course
This is a really great place for a relaxed, no stress, friendly day of golf. Great service at the bag drop, cool club house, cheap lunch, cheap beer. Also, range balls are included which was great. This is a great course to arrive early to.
The course itself was in great shape even though they had four temporary greens. The other greens were fantastic. The fairways and tee boxes were also great. I only say it was underwhelming because the lay out is kind of boring. No really memorable holes. No risky decisions needed. None of the par 5s are reachable. Fairways are wide open with few hazards in play. Everything is pretty flat. It got a little monotonous, but it was still fun and. really beautiful.
That said, a great place to golf with friends if you don’t want to think to hard. A great place where you can spend an entire afternoon.
Crown Park Golf Course
Played On 06/05/2018Surprisingly good time
All the courses in the area had a horrible winter, apparently. You can’t really tell here. #1 and #18 have really furry greens but the rest look and roll great. The course had around 2.5 inches of rain and the fairways were still in great shape. Maybe two fairways had dead spots, and you might not find the perfect consistent green grass throughout, but they felt great and responded like they are supposed to.
That aside, great layout and no distractions. Felt like I was in the middle of a forest. Surprisingly challenging too. Listen to the recommendations for each hole from the course website! The best suggestion is to keep the driver in the bag on all par fours. Distance doesn’t help here and mostly gets you into trouble. Accuracy is huge.
Website is great and helpful. Staff was nice and gave me some first-time tips for the course. And, the round comes with a free beer at the turn. Great time. I’ll come back and play when the weather is nicer.
Heritage Golf Links - Legacy Nine
Played On 06/05/2018Evening race for the first tee
I really like this course. Really challenging but fun. The only real negative is that there seems to be little order for evening tee times. People in the evening just show up, pay, and run out to the first tee. We showed up on time and teed off maybe 25 mins late. That said, we still got 18 holes in and we left the first tee at 5:30 and played part of that as a fivesome because of the hold up. So if you play in the evening, be prepared for a frustrating and hectic start, but after that it should be OK.

Really fun course with a lot of beautiful, interesting, and challenging holes. I used every single club in my bag. The Tradition 9 is really fun too and it was empty because people don’t like playing a par-35 side. But you should do it. It’s great. Heritage was probably my favorite of the nines though. Super friendly staff too. Great starter paired me up with a member who was fun to play with.
Bear's Best Atlanta
Played On 04/12/2018Just Aerated, Still Great
Bear’s Best is a challenging course with some really wonderfully designed holes. You can tell that each hill, ridge, tree, and bunker are intentionally placed to affect club and shot selection. That was really fun for me. Great for players that enjoy the tactical aspect of the game. You can still go driver-short iron on most holes, and the fairways are pretty open, but placement matters on every single shot if you want a birdie or even a par. The greens were covered in sand because they aerated the day before, but they were still smooth enough and everything else about the course was in such good shape that I didn’t really care. The fairways were immaculate. Also, the Bears Best Atlanta app was awesome! And crucial since it was my first time. Super easy to tell how far it was to carry a bunker and there are a lot of shots that require that information.
Some minor details could have been better. There were no scorecards and pencils in the box by the first green and no water in some of the ball washers. But I didn’t go there for those things and those things didn’t affect my round. So yea, if you’re a serious golfer that wants a challenge, it’s a great course and a fun experience.
Country Club of Gwinnett
Played On 02/18/2017Cool layout, great fairways, true greens
Course was in great shape for winter conditions. Fairways were full. Greens were smooth and quick but were hard. They didn't check. However, they were consistent, which was great. I figured out by the second hole that I needed to land everything under the hole and everything was fine. It's really easy to putt from the fringe and it's easy to play some low pitches and roll it onto the greens.
The course is really short but challenging. If you play the blue tees, I'd strongly recommend leaving the driver in the bag. Long off the tee is usually trouble. This course is all about course management and strategy, and I really liked that.
