Crescent Oaks Country Club
Played On 02/22/2018Good course reasonably priced
Have played this course a few times when in the Tampa area. It is consistently in good shape and provides sufficient challenges for even a good golfer (not claiming to be one). Greens were not that fast but one must still bring the A game.
Pleasantly surprised with pace of play - in Florida this time of year many courses pack in the out of towners and the pace of play suffers. Not so here.
Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club - North Course
Played On 02/18/2018Terrible course management
Booked the round through Golfnow and got a good deal at 12:24 pm. Was paired with a twosome and the three of us started the round a few minutes before our tee time. However, we ended up playing for almost 5 1/2 hours. There was no ranger on the course at any time keeping pace of play, no water or adequate ice at the comfort stations, and the cart girl came around only twice in those five plus hours. In addition, two groups of threesome members ahead of us decided to pair up to make a six-some and there was nobody around to address this.
The course boasts about the country club feel but apparently is in need of public money to keep afloat. You will not get my money ever again - terrible course management - shameful pace of play and poor on-course conditions.
The Eagles Golf Club - Lakes
Played On 02/17/2018Good course reasonably priced
Played early in the morning and the course was enveloped in fog for the first nine holes. Nontheless, we finished the round in about 3 1/2 hours on a Saturday morning. The course is not so difficult (when you have a clear view of each hole) and the greens are consistent even if not very fast.
Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 02/15/2018One of the best courses in the Tampa area
Every time I come to Tampa (2-3 times per year) I make a point of playing at this course. It has a great layout, one can get a good rate on golf now and the course maintains a good pace of play. That is really appreciated this time of year when so many Florida courses pack in the out-of-towners - charge them an arm and a leg and then forget them altogether so they can suffer through excruciatingly long rounds. World Woods has figured out how to stack tee times so this does not occur.
Big Run Golf Club
Played On 06/19/2016Great course for a great value
A local recommended the course to me and I was so glad I listened to him! The layout is interesting, visually appealing and challenging. The greens were in great shape. I played on Father's day so the pace of play was a bit slow but the price from GN was well worth the slower pace of play.
Palm Beach National Golf Course
Played On 02/14/2016Great day due to all the friendly people!
I booked a Hot Deal for this course and was able to play for a very good price during high priced winter season. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by friendly and accommodating people from the gentleman in the pro shop to the starter. I was paired with three guys on the front nine and then, when they left played with a couple from Montreal who are members at the club. The golf pro for the course joined us for a while and was willing to give me a few pointers on my game. All around, an unusually enjoyable day primarily due to the friendliness of the people I encountered.
Northdale Golf Club
Played On 11/13/2015Close to the airport
Have played Northdale twice while on business in Tampa - it is close to the airport so a good course to get to for a quick round before leaving or upon arriving in Tampa area.
Rustic is the best way to describe the course. The tee boxes are full of weeds, the fairways while cut were full of grass shavings and therefore sloppy and the bunkers need much work. However, the greens were in surprisingly good shape and the course has a good layout (Ron Garl design). I think the primary defense of the course is it's length.
For a price of around $32 through GN it is worth the trip if you realize that you will not be playing a premium course.
EagleSticks Golf Club
Played On 05/20/2015Fun and well-maintained course
I have played this course a few times and have always found it to be in good condition and a fun and manageable course to play. Shot position is essential on most holes if you want to avoid hazards and bunkers. The only drawback to the course is its location - it is off the beaten path for anyone who does not live in the area and the small town roads are usually quite congested.
The Club at Eaglebrooke
Played On 02/08/2015Good course at great price
Played this course for the first time on a trip to Tampa. It is only about 30 minutes from the city and well worth the drive. The layout is interesting, set apart from the city and suburbs and the greens were in good shape. It is a good alternative to the resort courses so prevalent in Florida.
The Eagles Golf Club - Forest
Played On 02/07/2015Pleasant course
I played the Lakes course in December and the Forest course in February. Both are fine courses, close to the city and accessible from the airport (if you fly in to Florida to get away from the snow and play some golf!)
I don't think I would give either course a 4.4 out of 5 however. Still, the greens were in good shape and that often defines the quality of a golf course.
Ventura Country Club
Played On 01/17/2015Great greens!
Played this course for the first time in January 2015 when I was in the Orlando area. Decided to try it based upon the GN reviews and was not disappointed.
It is a very reasonably priced course for the area and the greens are surprisingly fast with much undulation.
The course layout is not particularly tricky once you navigate the bunkers but the greens will kick your a..!
RedTail Golf Club
Played On 01/16/2015Country course not far from the big city
While in the Orlando area I decided to make the drive and try this course located in Sorrento, FL. It takes around one hour to get there but is worth the drive when you consider the course layout, conditions and price.
Unlike the very pricey resort courses available in the Orlando area, this course is set out in horse country and has the wide open feel and breathing room of a country course. Nonetheless, the condition of the course is every bit as good as the resort courses. The greens are tricky and fast and the course architect surely loves bunkers!
Sanctuary Ridge Golf Club
Played On 01/14/2015Layout and elevation changes make the course
I have played this course over the last 4 years or so each time I am in the Orlando area in January. The course has a great layout and significant elevation changes, especially for a Florida course. For this reason it is worth booking a round. You can get a tee time at a reasonable price and the course appears to be popular with the locals.
The bunkers need work and the greens were rather slow but consider the other advantages as an offset.
Celebration Golf Club
Played On 01/12/2015Challenging layout - great course conditions
This was the first time I played the course and managed to get the Hot Deal through GN. We were almost the first players in the morning and the course still had dew and fog. Still, it is in great condition with fast greens, many bunkers and water hazards and beautiful scenery. The layout is excellent and you should put this course on your list when in the Orlando area.
Harmony Golf Preserve
Played On 01/11/2015Not as good as prior years
Whenever I get to the Orlando area I have tried to schedule a round at Harmony GC which I always considered a well maintained, attractive and challenging course. However, this year the course looked more beaten up and less maintained than it has in prior years. The bunkers were clearly in need of more sand and were ragged around the edges and the greens were not nearly as fast as they have been in the past. It is a shame that such a gem of a course should not be maintained as well as it has in the past.
Colonial Country Club
Played On 08/12/2014Great condition but boring
Played the course on a humid 93 degree day in August. Very few other players on the course so I was able to play fairly quickly. Course is in good condition and well maintained but from the forward tees somewhat boring. No hazards to contend with, little or no elevation changes or uneven lies. As always I love the birds in Florida but other courses provide better wildlife viewing. Would only play again at the summer rates.
Tega Cay Golf Club - The Cove
Played On 08/11/2014Okay course but would not seek it out
Played the course while on business in Charlotte. Managed to get in a round late afternoon after much rain which meant cart path only. Course has some good views with elevation changes on most holes and many uneven lies. Local knowledge would be a plus. Course is in okay condition and some of the hole locations are a bit confusing.
The Tillery Tradition Country Club
Played On 08/10/2014Play this course if in the area
I happened to be visiting family along Lake Tillery and was able to book a round after reading other golfnow reviews. The course is in very good condition - I played after a few days of rain and had no problem with soaked fairways or greens.
I like the layout with the rolling fairways and uneven lies - makes the round more challenging and the views more enjoyable.
Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 08/07/2014Old school style
The course designed by RTJ is challenging with many many bunkers strewn throughout the course.
The course is in "okay" condition - it has seen better days. Still, if you are in the area and want to experience an old style classic layout then play this course.
The Legend at Shanty Creek
Played On 07/23/2014Consistent quality
Played the Legend after playing Cedar River a few years ago. This course was consistent with the quality of the Shanty Creek courses and was consistent with other Palmer designed courses in difficulty and challenge.
While the course is aesthetically very pleasing it is also made more difficult by the frequent elevation changes, rolling fairways and uneven lies. Ultimately, when you reach the greens they are fast with many undulations. The course is quite difficult but worth a round - just be sure to bring your A game.
We hope to see you again soon! Sorry about the traffic. Next time you are in, please stop in and introduce yourself!
