San Tan Highlands
Played On 07/12/2020Typical JR; Slow, poor fairways and decent greens
So, I haven't played JR in a while because I vowed never to come back due to the extremely slow pace of play. Today reminded me about why I made that vow. Our tee time was 7:38 and we teed off close to 8. Blows my mind that they were 20 minutes behind at 7:38.
I laughed at the "pace of play" cards in the car because I have never played this course in under 5 hours and today was no different.
Most of the greens were in very good shape and rolling well but the fairways are garbage. I realize it's July in Arizona but go play the majority of the other courses and at least there is grass in the fairways. There is dirt. Two fairways were "ok" the rest were awful.
No beverage service, no water stations (I realize that with COVID but again, many other courses still offer water no the course, ice in the cooler, beverage service etc.
This is my last visit to JR. Too many better courses for a much better value and pace of play.
Championship at Viewpoint Golf Resort
Played On 04/07/2019Nice Fairways and True Greens
Not a tough layout but this course will challenge you if you miss the fairways as they are mostly tree lined. Fairways are in great shape and the greens are quick but true. Some greens look like they had some troubles during the frost season but are recovering nicely.
Staff was very friendly and I would play here again for sure. It had been about 8 years since I played here and I enjoyed it.
Kokopelli Golf Course
Played On 02/05/2018Wet Course Terrible Bunkers
I played Kokopelli on 02-05-18 at 0707 hours as the first group. The course was extremely wet and the greens were slow (I expected slow greens just not mud on the fairways). As expected, Kokopelli has some of the worst sand bunkers in the metro Phoenix area. The sand is mud and not hittable. There were puddles in the bunkers and they were horrendous. It took everything in my power to convince my playing partner to play Kokopelli to begin with and now he said he will never go back. Not sure I will either but, I guess when you look at the overall price paid for the type of year, it was a good value.
Las Colinas Golf Club
Played On 02/09/2014Never Disappoints
Course was in outstanding condition as they had an amateur event there later in the afternoon. Lush green fairways and true rolling greens. My only complaint is not the golf course's fault but there were a lot of un-repaired ball marks on the green. No excuse for that guys, fix your pitch marks. I always love this course though.
Starfire Golf Club - The King Course
Played On 01/26/2014Gem
I had not played Starfire prior to this round and I must say I was thoroughly impressed with this course, the layout, conditions and the overall awesome staff. We played The Squire and The King. The overall yardage was shorter than most courses however that did not take away the overall challenging layout. Not an extremely difficult course but it will make you hit accurate and controlled tee shots and focused approach shots.
They don't have a typical driving range but instead have the low flight ball range. That is typical for older Arizona courses because if the lack if room to expand. You still get to make some warm up swings and that's really all that matters.
I will 100% return to this course many more times even though I have a 35 min drive. I truly was impressed. You need to play it. It won't disappoint and you won't be totally exhausted after the round, which in our case, was just about 4 hours.
Poston Butte Golf Club
Played On 07/28/2013Hidden Gem
Poston Butte is the hidden gem of the east valley. This was the first time I had ever played the course and I was thoroughly impressed. The course was immaculate for late July in the desert. The greens were perfect and had a really good pace to them. This course was well worth the drive and definitively one that is going on the rotation.
Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 05/09/2013Great Course TERRIBLE Staff
The course was a great course and there were some amazing views. Greens were a tad bumpy but that was due to the fact they punched them earlier in the week but they cured quite nicely already. We were extremely disappointed in the staff. The only nice staff member was the starter. He was friendly and assisted with questions regarding the different tees based on appropriate handicaps for our group. When we teed off at 0840 there were no scheduled groups behind us for 20 minutes. The group in front of us had already reached the third hole by the time we teed off. However, the Marshall told us on hole number 6 that we had to pick up our pace of play. Il looked back to see if anyone had caught up to us and there was no group in sight. I checked my phone and we were actually 5 minutes ahead of the recommended pace. When questioned why were we told to pick up the pace given no one was behind us he told us because he said so and he drove off. When we reached 10 I commented to a staff member how impressed I was with the course and he just looked at me without any acknowledgement. Everyone has a bad day but 3 out of 4 staff members with attitude was extremely disappointing.
I would play here again if given the opportunity to play the Mountain Course. They rotate the two courses everyday. Would have been 5 star rating without the staff.
Ahwatukee Country Club
Played On 02/01/2013Fast and True Greens
It was in great shape with fast greens and green fairways. Some par 3 tee boxes need love and attention but, overall the course was great.
We encourage you to reach out to our golf shop to discuss this more. We apologize your experience went this way, and we'd love to discuss this further. Thanks for coming out to the course!
